Eligibility

Students with at least Second Class honours in the First University Examination in Commerce

&

Students who obtain at least Second Class honours in the Second University Examination in Commerce, at the Summer Examination.

BCOMM YEAR ABROAD


Requirements while Abroad

To fulfill requirements for the successful completion of the year abroad, a student must achieve a pass standard, as applied by the host institution, on a set of courses approved by the Faculty of Commerce, UCC. Students will be asked to complete a workload broadly equivalent to:

(a) 60 ECTS credits or (b) 288 teaching contact hours over an academic year. The workload

should be at a broadly equivalent level to the UCC BComm III.

Year-abroad students are not expected to take identical courses to the modules offered in BComm III. Nevertheless, students are advised that some modules in BComm III may be prerequisites to certain BComm IV modules (and/or certain postgraduate programmes).

Recognition by UCC

Marks shall be submitted to the Summer Examination Board, UCC, with a Supplemental Board in Autumn. Honours will not be awarded at the Third Commerce Examination Boards to those students who take their year abroad.

Instead, academic transcripts and/or other certified documentation from the host university will be appended to the academic transcript issued by UCC.

Application Process

There are 3 stages to the application process:(i) Complete an internal application form and submit to the International Education

Office. Deadline: Friday, January 11th 2013.(ii) If selected to spend the third year abroad an application will be submitted to the

appropriate university in the US, Canada, Scotland, Finland or Singapore. The deadline for receipt of applications will be determined by the host institution.

(iii) Once you have been accepted by a host institution, you must then select the modules you wish to take during the year.

You are advised to consult with the Director of the BComm programme, Dr. Noel Woods and other members of the Faculty of Commerce before making your selection.

Faculty Approval

Receive permission from the Faculty of Commerce to spend the year abroad.

Faculty must also approve the modules selected by students.

A three month placement may be a possibility during the Summer of 2014.

“I spent the third year of my Commerce degree studying at Pace University in New York. It was undoubtedly one of the best experiences of my life. The university was located just two blocks from Wall Street so there was a real emphasis on the financial markets which I thoroughly enjoyed. I now hope to pursue a career in that area of business.
