Please mail a check to the address below or bring it to our January meeting. Bayou Chapter of the Ozark Society P.O. Box 4693 Shreveport, LA 71134 Thanks for your membership in BCOS!!
2016 Membership Application is on the
last page of this newsletter.
I would like to take a minute to thank everyone for allowing me to do the monthly BCOS newsletter for the past 4 years. I have enjoyed every single bit of it. Unfortunately with adding my new job at Shreveport Bossier Animal Rescue, www.shreveportbossieranimalrescue.org to the mix, I just don’t have much free time anymore. I am very happy that Roger West has graciously offered to take on the newsletter duties start-ing in January.
Thank you again and I hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Kalli Bailey

Ecotourism workshop slated for Dec. 16 in Jonesville
JONESVILLE, La. – The LSU AgCenter, National Audubon Society and Louisiana Delta Adventures will host an ecotourism workshop on Dec. 16 at the Honey Brake Lodge in Jonesville. The daylong workshop will feature an overview of wildlife viewing opportunities in northeast Louisiana and strategies for managing land for wildlife. Attendees will also learn about promoting themselves as an ecotourism operator, legal issues and incentive programs. A tour of the Honey Brake property, a premier ecotourism destination in the region, will take place in the afternoon. “Most ecotourism activities that will be discussed are included under the agritourism limited liability law that was passed in 2008 under the leadership of state Rep. Andy Anders,” said Dora Ann Hatch, LSU AgCenter agritourism coordinator. Workshop attendees will not only learn how to attract birds to their property but also how to attract bird watchers to the region, Hatch said. More than 300 species of birds live in northeast Louisiana, accounting for about one-third of all species found in the U.S. and Canada, Hatch said. Bird watching and wildlife watching are ways that landown-ers can diversify their incomes and operations. The workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Honey Brake Lodge, located at 1899 Larto Bridge Road in Jonesville. Lunch will be provided. Those interested in attending should RSVP by Dec. 11 to Erik Johnson at [email protected].

New Year’s day at Sugar Creek
On 1 Jan 2016 Jack and Marsha Land will host a get-together at their place at Sugar Creek. Jack &
Marsha will furnish some greens and Black Eyed Peas. If anyone would like to bring some Corn
Bread or any other additional food it would be most appreciated.
If anyone wishes to show up on the 31st of Dec. to ring in the new year, there is plenty of room to set
up tents. If you wish to sleep inside, Marsha has indicated that they have cots and all you would need
is a sleeping bag. —————— I have been informed that anyone causing a disturbance by loudly
snoring will have to sleep with the chickens, you have been warned.
In addition to the food fest, there will be a short hike around the property for anyone with a feeling of
wanderlust. If in fact this hike goes forth, there will be five count em [ 5 ] credits awarded towards the
end of the 2016 year hiking surprise. Therefore you must be sure your name gets listed as a hiker.
There may be other news forthcoming about new years activities so stay tuned for the latest .
Anybody who is certain to attend, please notify me by E Mail so a “ wag “ on the number of attendees
can be counted.

Bayou Chapter Ozark Society
Minutes - November 17, 2015 The meeting opened at 6:43 with Tom Goleman introducing our speaker Dr. Lawrence Hardy with the Ouachita Mountains Biological Station (OMBS). The first property purchased for the station was 200 acres in 1962, about 25 miles east of Mena, AR, and 12 miles NW of Shady Lake Campground. The second purchase was 100 acres in 1963, then another 80 acres attached to the 200 was acquired. Later, 200 acres was donated from a benefactor, making the biological station 600 acres total. The purpose of the station is Research and Education. This land remains a totally natural environment. The OMBS wants this to be an old growth forest. If the forest burns, it’s an opportunity for learning about the land and regeneration. There are four miles of well-marked trails to hike. There is plenty of wildlife: along with dear and coy-otes, there are bear, gray fox, and spotted skunk. Any group can go and stay overnight at OMBS, with no cost -as of now. (Donations would be accepted.) Reservations can be made online at www.theombs.org. It’s 205 miles from LSUS to the station, and 50 miles round trip from Mena.
