PGCE studentsCourse ees will be a maximum o 3,175. Youwill be eligible to take out a student ee loan tocover these, as well as a student maintenance

loan (subject to previous study rules). You willalso be eligible or a Maintenance Grant o upto 2,835. 1,260 is guaranteed, the remaining1,575 will be means-tested in the same wayas or undergraduate students.

PGCE students who will teach insecondary schoolsAdditionally these students are eligible toreceive a TDAS bursary o 9,000 or traineesin Mathematics, Science or English.

How do I apply?

Direct to Faculty

Getting started - what will I need? An initial qualifcation at Honours levelusually in a complementary subjecti.e. Drama, Theatre Studies, EnglishLiterature, etc.

Prior experience that would acilitate thesuccessul completion o the course anddemonstrate at special interview your abilityto progress at the required rate.

Auditions are through a two stage process:Initial Audition you must prepare and

memorise two contrasting speeches romdierent plays, no more than two minuteslong. One o which must have been writtenin the last 20 years.

Recall Audition lasts or a whole dayand consists o: An acting workshop, voice and

movement assessments The presentation o two speeches (one

rom the Elizabethan/Jacobean period) A song A reading

Tell me more...This is a course designed or those who wishto pursue careers as proessional actors.During the course the ocus is on learningthrough perormance, with the balanceprogressing rom technical skills toperormance. In the fnal term the emphasisis on public live perormance, radio and screenskills and career management. The course has

proessional accreditation rom the NationalCouncil or Drama Training (NCDT).

What will I study?The course is an extremely intensive trainingprocess that requires the highest level ocommitment. It is expected that you will workand progress at a very high rate to ensure thatevery opportunity is explored and exploitedto the ullest. It demands an enormousamount o time, commitment and energy,challenging you intellectually, physically andemotionally. Our typical working day is long(8:45am-6:00pm) and you will be expected tocomplete preparation and research, as well

as learn lines between classes with someevenings and weekends used or rehearsalsand perormance.

Although the academic year is longer at 36weeks and the ull days are parallel to the BA(Honours), trying to achieve a similar outcomein a shorter time adds to the pressure on you,a pressure which can prove difcult or some.

It progresses rom technical skills in thefrst term to perormance, career advice andsupport in the third term. Also, in the fnalterm, a Showcase is presented in Birminghamand London to invited agents, casting directorsand other proessionals. A fnal perormance isdelivered ater Showcase in a well establishedBirmingham theatre.

How is my work assessed?As the course only teaches essential elementsyou are required to attend all classes attendance is part o the assessment o a

module. All modules are taken into accountor the fnal dierentiation o the award

Distinction, Commendation and Pass to reect the level o technical abilityachieved, as well as the assimilation othese skills into perormance.

Can I study urther?I you wish to urther develop your actingand related skills, you can apply to studythe Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip) PhysicalTheatre* or the PgDip/MA ProessionalVoice Practice*. There are also opportunitieswithin the University to study a Postgraduate

Certifcate in Education (PGCE).

Tell me more...This course oers advanced, intensive, practicaltraining or actors who wish to urther theirskills in making work that is ully expressiveand creative. It has at its core three vitalelements in the creation o physical theatre:movement analysis, voice and ensemble work.You will learn to develop your own physicaltechnique and presence in order that you canbe as physically and vocally expressive aspossible. You will also expand on your ability towork with others and to be creative with spaceand exible in time.

What will I study?The course consists o three core creativeskills classes:

Movement awarenessYou will develop movement technique and bodyawareness involving balance, co-ordination,physical connection and articulation andisolation. Other areas covered are elementso Feldenkrais technique, mime and acrobatics.

Voice

Voice is an element in most o the work andthis class builds on the basic technique ogood vocal use, deepening the understandingo the connection between voice and body.

EnsembleThis develops your creativity; working in space,time and with ellow actors. Areas coveredare elements o Laban technique, contactimprovisation, group rhythm work, elementand animal work.

Running alongside these classes will beextended laboratories in areas that may include: Full Mask Physical Storytelling Clown and Comedy Hal Mask Character Text and Tragedy

Getting started - what will I need? Candidates will normally possess a frst

degree, perormance diploma or equivalentqualifcation, usually in a complementarysubject i.e. Drama, Theatre Studies, EnglishLiterature, etc.

I you do not meet the above entryrequirements but possess an appropriatelevel o perormance skills and proessionalexperience, you will also be considered.You may be asked to demonstrate at specialinterview ability to progress at the

Audition is through a two stage process audition and interview (30 non-reundable).

For the audition, candidates are required toprepare and present: A two minute speech in verse rom an

Elizabethan/Jacobean play OR a musicaltheatre song (accompaniment provided)

A Shakespearean sonnet A piece o modern or contemporary verse

This programme must not last more thanfve minutes. You need to be able todemonstrate some sensitivity to, andawareness o, the demands o speakingtext in a perormance context.

Tell me more...The course was developed with the support othe Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) VoiceDepartment and will eature guest lecturesrom a range o practitioners, includingrenowned voice teachers and coachesas well as laryngologists, speech therapistsand voice proessionals working within themedical proession.

It is likely to appeal to those who already havean interest in and some knowledge o voice:

actors, drama graduates, teachers, speechtherapists, singers and musicians with aparticular interest in vocal music.

This course is intended or those who seekspecialised practice and study in voice andspeech. Whilst the oundation o the courseis rooted in the principles o healthy vocaluse, it will not ocus on a particular systemor regime. It will concentrate on an approachto working with language developed by CicelyBerry at the RSC and you will have theopportunity o working with members othe RSC Voice Department. What will I study?This course provides an opportunity to study indepth the theory and practice o working withthe voice. Sound theoretical underpinning isprovided by a study o anatomy and physiology,phonology and voice pedagogy. Simultaneously,you will develop your own vocal instrument

through a study o practical voice work,

practical work on text and singing. Yourteaching skills are developed through microteaching, teaching practice and/or proessionalplacements within local theatres (including theRSC) and regional drama schools.

What will I study?It is a taught programme exploring approachesin documentary practice during the PostgraduateCertifcate (PgCert). This ollows with anegotiated research project and a collaborativemodule, in partnership with BirminghamCentral Library, during the PostgraduateDiploma (PgDip), exploring its celebrated

photographic archive, which includes BillBrandt images and note books. The Masters

(MA) stage concludes in a sel-directed substantialbody o work. This combines academic rigourwith the maximum o creative exibility.

What will I study?

Term two covers the CIPDs Specialist andGeneralist Proessional Standards and includesthe International Personnel and Developmentmodule to develop HR knowledge and
