Avalon’s Kiwi Godmother Fondly known as ‘the Mother of the Nation’, New Zealand broadcaster Judy Bailey is to be- come godmother to Avalon Waterways’ new suite ship Avalon Imagery II. Bailey will christen the 64-cabin ship at a ceremony on the Rhine next year, becoming the first New Zealander to launch an Avalon ship. Avalon’s local gm Troy Ackerman says Bailey’s involvement is a fitting tribute to the growing number of Kiwis cruising Europe’s rivers. “Judy is a superb ambassador for New Zea- land and her role symbolises the huge passion we have developed for river cruising,” he says. Kiwi consumers will benefit from a competitor launching on the Auck- land-Los Angeles route and the new flights are already bringing prices down, said American Airlines and Qantas as they announced the AA service today. AA will add non-stop 787-8 AKL-LAX services from Jun 2016 as part of its expanded partnership with QF. AA boss Doug Parker says the Pacific region is ‘incredibly important’ to the carrier, and the flights will connect Kiwis at LAX with a ‘truly global net- work’ including over 150 US cities. While Parker acknowledged that other US carriers haven’t been able to make the route work, he says three key things have changed—the market is much larger now, the 787 didn’t exist before and AA’s relationship with QF will allow it to succeed. With the new JQ regional flights, the carriers will be able to ‘operate city pairs and services we never thought possible before’, such as Dunedin to Disneyland, says QF chief Alan Joyce. While United Airlines recently an- nounced AKL-SFO services, Parker said he remained confident the grow- ing market between New Zealand and the US can sustain the rapid increase in capacity. The US is a high growth market and ‘we think it can grow even further’, says Joyce. . . . NZ: We Will Benefit AA and QF called Air New Zealand a ‘great competitor’ and said there’s plenty of room for both AA and NZ on the AKL-LAX route. “We will bring more people to the market,” said Parker, adding that the vast major- ity of its passengers will originate in the US. “They’re not worried about QF as a competitor, and we’re not worried about them,” added Joyce. NZ released LAX fares for $499 one- way this morning and Joyce pointed out that the new AA flights mean ‘New Zealand consumers are already benefiting’. “I hope all those people will remember who did it,” he joked. Parker added that while AA doesn’t have fares loaded yet, ‘we will be competitive’. NZ’s chief commercial officer Cam Wallace agreed that the new flights are positive. “It’s good news for the New Zealand tourism industry that we are going to see even more US visitors to our nation,” he says. “NZ is one of the key beneficiaries of tourism growth because we are the preferred airline for visitors wanting to get out and ex- plore our nation’s regions and cities.” Consumer Benefit From AA AKL-LAX

Avalon’s Kiwi GodmotherFondly known as ‘the Mother of the Nation’, New Zealand broadcaster Judy Bailey is to be-come godmother to Avalon Waterways’ n e w su i te sh ip Avalon Imagery II. Don’t fight the Auckland traffic . . . go against the flow

Intermediate/Senior Travel Consultant

American Airlines’ new flights have received a resounding wel-come from the travel industry, which believes the new flights will drive competition and lead to lower fares. The announcement represents around 82,000 more seats annually between New Zealand and Los Ange-les—and on to AA’s 150 destinations in the US, says local Brand USA rep Wayne Mitcham.“There’s a real opportunity for the trade distribution to offer their cli-ents the choice of another airline that has a very attractive product proposi-tion, with on-board Wi-Fi, business and premium economy class and the

like,” says Mitcham. “And given that the AA flight arrives in LAX at 0630 it means Kiwi travellers will have all day to connect to on-going flights beyond LA. For Kiwi agents the USA is now your oyster.”Mitcham adds that he hopes the joint venture between AA and QF is here to stay. “NZ has a huge following of brand loyal customers and is already offering $499 one-way LAX fares on Grabaseat. The competition on this route is going to be intense initially and Kiwi travellers will benefit.”

. . . Market GrowthHouse of Travel’s Brent Thomas be-lieves the new flights will grow Kiwi travel to the US. “This isn’t just going to be a transfer of people from one airline to another—what we will see is a significant growth in the market to the US—partly due to a greater number of seats at prices that will drive greater demand,” he says.A significant part of this is the in-bound opportunity which will be a boom for the economy, says Thomas. “LAX is a favourite destination with New Zealand travellers and a hub for AA. The onward ability to get down to all points of continental USA, the Caribbean, Mexico and South

America is a strong selling point,” says Thomas. “It will create a great opportunity for Kiwis to explore the Americas.”Thomas says competition on the route will be significant. “NZ will ensure that their planes continue to be at or near capacity and that’s what a competitive market does,” says Thomas.Flight Centre’s Philip Goad agrees, saying ‘we’ll likely see this drive com-petition on what is already a popular route’.

. . . HNL-AKL Repeat?Transport Minister Simon Bridges says the competitive benefits were one of the key reasons he approved the QF/AA joint venture for another five years over the weekend—and he’s flagging a possible repeat of the price war that erupted on the Auckland-Honolulu route as a result of the new Hawaiian Airlines flights.“What I think we all agree is com-petition ultimately is very good for consumers,” he says. “We saw this happen very much so when HA en-tered HNL-AKL, the way fare prices dropped almost instantaneously. New Zealand consumers would like to see that again.”

AA Flights To Drive Competition

AA Auckland-DallasAmerican Airlines boss Doug Parker said it was a close call for the car-rier on whether it would launch flights from Los Angeles or Dallas to Auckland—and said that AKL-DFW flights could still be on the table in the future. In the end the AKL-LAX flights were selected because the majority of travel from the US to New Zealand originates along the West Coast, and the 787-8 wouldn’t be able to make the trip, he said. However the carrier is getting new 787-9s at the end of the year and Parker said they would like to see AKL-DFW ‘at some point’.“Eventually I think the AKL-DFW would work but we need to walk before we run,” QF boss Alan Joyce added.

QF/AA And AgentsQantas boss Alan Joyce apologised for missing travel agents from his speech when announcing the new American Airlines flights this morn-ing, saying they’re a key distribution channel and will play a part in the success of the new flights. TAANZ boss Andrew Olsen questioned Joyce on why he directed consumers to the QF website for the new fares, and both Joyce and AA boss Doug Parker said they have a great relationship with the trade and will be working closely with them on promoting the new flights.

AKL Lounge Refresh?Qantas boss Alan Joyce was asked this morning if there are any plans to upgrade its Auckland lounge ahead of the new AA flights. He said AKL is ‘on the plans’ but couldn’t give a timeline, and said it more than likely won’t be in time for the new flights.

The Avalon Waterways team in New Zealand are counting down the days to the launch of the brand’s newest ship, the Avalon Imagery II—as its the first to be dedicated to the New Zealand market. With New Zealand broadcaster Judy Bailey selected for the role as its godmother, Kiwis will have yet an-other reason to cruise with the brand, says Avalon Waterways gen-eral manager New Zealand Troy Ackerman. “From day one she was the obvious choice for us, not only because of her standing in New Zealand, but of her ability to reso-nate with our brand values. . . It’s absolutely wonderful.” While the product has been extremely popular with the New Zealand market for some years now, Ackerman says this will ‘add a local flavour to it that we really haven’t had before.’ “We’re rapt,” he says. “To be recog-nised in this way is hugely exciting.”

At 110 metres in length, the Avalon Imagery II will be the latest example of Avalon Waterways’ successful suite ship concept, which offers two decks of all-suite accommodation and 30% more cabin space than the industry average. Each of its suites will feature wall-to-wall panoramic windows that can be opened to turn the entire cabin into an open-air balcony, or closed to create an invit-ing living area. Cater ing to no more than 128 passengers, the ship will operate primarily on the Rhine, offering Avalon’s eight-day Romantic Rhine it inerar y between Amsterdam and Basel.
