Retail sector joins forces in effort to boost the area’s economyIt’s been said, when the going gets tough, the tough get going. And that’s exactly what hap-pened when the Richland Community Development Group called on the retail sector to join forces in an effort to boost the area economy. Jeff Kent, owner of Swan Cleaners, and Dirk Schluter, owner of Mansfield Motor Group, are enthusiastically leading the grassroots movement to encourage Richland County residents to ‘Be Fo-cal, Buy Local.’“When the community got together, everyone agreed the most prominent issue to address is to get people to buy local,” Schluter said.

“After that initial meet-ing, in the middle of the night I woke up thinking, ‘focal… local’ which ended up being the ‘Be Focal Buy Local’ campaign slogan,” Kent remembered. “There’s so much national competi-tion, it’s hard to get people to even see what local ven-dors have to offer. I think this campaign is beginning to open their eyes.”

“The problem we’re find-ing is that because of the Internet, people are shop-ping from home,” Schluter said. “They’re sending their money all over the coun-try, rather than support-ing their local stores and businesses. It’s creating a snowball effect. As the stores lose money, jobs are cut, which decreases the tax base.

Then everything else snowballs backwards to where pretty soon, the safety services and schools are in constant need of money. People just don’t realize how buying on the Internet not only hurts the mom and pop shops and local retailers, but also hurts our entire economy

and ends up costing us more in the long run.”Schluter cited the 2011 Independent Business Survey that shows com-munities with a ‘buy local’ organization will increase its revenue by 3.5-percent.

“We took this number to the local economic development unit to put a pencil to it,” Schluter said. “For Richland County, that 3.5-percent works out to be $85 million, which translates to $5.7 million in tax revenue. It seems to me that $5.7 million would fix a lot of the bills we have right now. And that’s just sales tax. Healthier businesses mean more jobs, which would mean even more taxes being paid in the form of income taxes.

“When people spend their money outside of the com-munity, that money doesn’t come back. But, for every $100 spent locally, $68 stays here,” he said, citing the study. “If people don’t get this concept, our small towns are going to dry up and blow away. The down-town landscape is already changing. I realize Internet shopping is convenient. We can purchase anything we want right on our phone in the palm of our hand – from anywhere in the world. But that conve-nience is costing all of us. There isn’t a single person this won’t touch.”

“We need to keep our money working for us right here,” Kent said. “Even the big chain stores employ people and pay their taxes here. If I need a tool, say, my choice would be to buy from a mom and pop store, but I’d still rath-er shop at a big hardware store in Ontario than go to Columbus for what I need or buy it online because

the money’s staying here.

“The tax base is a direct product of sales, if there’s no tax base, then there’s no government services – like fire and police protec-tion or public schooling – unless we pay for those things with increasing lev-ies,” Kent said. “Supporting the local economy secures your own job.

We have to support each other and always at least try to buy local first. This is about community. There’s so much available in this town, we just have to be willing to look for it.”

“Mansfield is not the only community with this prob-lem – it’s happening all across the nation,” Schluter pointed out. “But, people are beginning to wake up to the fact they must sup-port their local vendors, not only for price, but also for personal service and selection.

“Besides taxes and jobs, the charity dollars com-ing from local businesses is huge,” Schluter said, noting businesses sponsor schools, teams and events, offer food and prize dona-tions and give to every worthy cause that comes through the door. “So why wouldn’t we want to sup-port the businesses who are supporting us?”

“This campaign is trying to create awareness to get people to stop and think before they’re so quick to click, or to jump in the car and drive to Columbus,” Schluter said. “People think they’re going to get a better deal out of town, but, gas prices aside, your local vendors are much more apt to address price – smaller towns have lower overhead – and will bend over backwards for

you with customer service. It’s all perception.”

“In the corporate world, most of the decision mak-ing isn’t done locally,” Kent said. “At the big stores, the managers aren’t able to make decisions without talking to corporate. At my store, I make the decisions. I’m right there to help. Service from our local ven-dors can’t be beat. If you order your office supplies from Ritter’s, they come to your store, inventory what

you need and deliver it at no charge. I know I’m sav-ing money. Locally, you’re going to talk to a real person – a person who is eager to serve you and build a relationship. It’s the old-fashioned way.”

“What it boils down to is, do we want to take care of our community or not?” Schluter asked. “Shopping local is paying it forward. You support the busi-nesses in your community and it will come back to

you.The bottom line is, when people take money out of their own com-munity, they’re hurting themselves.”

To get involved, go to www.chooserichland.com and click on the Be Focal Buy Local sector. You can also check out the Be Focal Buy Local page on Facebook and become a member of the grassroots team by posting about lo-cal businesses and attend-ing meetings.

Throughout this section, you will notice the Be Focal By Local logo used in many of the adver-tisements. The Richland Community Development Group’s (RCDG) Be Focal Buy Local sector is encouraging all busi-nesses to use this logo to get the message out about keeping sales dol-lars local.

The Be Focal Buy Local trademarked logo can be used in any form of advertising; letterhead, emails, faxes, social media or marketing col-lateral materials. Busi-ness owners can also purchase Be Focal Buy Local window stickers, hats, mugs or shirts from Swan Cleaners on Park Ave. in Mansfield.

The Be Focal Buy Local sector of the RCDG is made up of many area businesses. The group encourages anyone in-terested in the Be Focal Buy Local campaign to attend one of the bi-weekly meeting. Visit Be Focal Buy Local on Face-book or go to the RCDG website to learn more.

Weighing Technology For Today’s IndustryADVERTISEMENT - The AshlandScale Company was established asa branch office of ABSCO Scales in1975, when Fred Gottfried movedhis family to Ashland as a residenttechnician. The parent company, founded byGeorge Ankney of Columbus, wasknown and respected as one ofthe largest scale service companiesin Ohio since the 1930s. Sincepurchasing the branch in 1989,Gottfried has seen Ashland Scalegrow from eight to 18 employeesin four cities. In 2000, the companyexpanded again to add a new officeand service facility that includes aclimate controlled test lab geared tomeet the increasing requirements ofthe ISO and TS quality programs thecompany provides.

To meet customer needs, AshlandScale has amplified its line ofequipment to include scalesranging from laboratory balancesto platforms, hoppers, conveyors, and vehicle scales. Ashland Scale offersfoundation construction, installation, custom built scales, custom controlpanels and software, computernetworking and many other servicesto complete a full inventory ofprojects.

Ashland Scale’s priority, from dayone, has been to provide qualityservice to its customers. To backup this statement, the companyhas consistently been a leader ininnovative programs to enhance its

ADVERTISEMENT - Today’sstore is much different thenit was five years ago uponopening. “Today, Hiller’sCountry Market” is gettingto be known as the storewith the best selectionof cake decorating andcandy making supplieswithin Ashland and thesurrounding counties,”states Kathy (owner, operator), “This is notmyself talking but it iswhat I hear from my ever-growing cake-decoratingcustomer base.” Describingmany first-time customers,Kathy continues, “ Ilove seeing many first-time cake-decoratingcustomers as they reactlike a kid in a candy storebeing overwhelmed witheverything I have.”

If by chance, Hiller doesnot have what a customeris looking for within thecake or candy-making lineof product, she will do allshe can to get it in. “I amhere to be a service to my

customers. I appreciateeach and everyone of mycustomers and want to doall I can to help them.”Although, Hiller does notdecorate cakes herself, shehas taken classes so she canbe more helpful to thosestarting out themselves. “Ican help customers withthe basics. My daughterMolly McKean and I aretaking classes together andour hope is for Molly tosomeday decorate cakesand give classes.

To go along with cakes,Hiller has expanded herselection of birthdaycandles with almost 100different candles to choosefrom starting at $0.75for a package of 36 basiccandles in various colors.

Although, Hiller isexpanding the cakedecorating supplies, Kathyhas not given up on bulkfood supplies, which iswhat the store startedout being known for.

“Although I am eliminatingsome bulk food items tocreate more space for thecake supplies, I do notplan to give up on thebasic bulk food suppliessuch as spices, bakingsupplies, grains, rice, beans, etc.. and of coursemy melting chocolates andall the other related candy-making items includingLorAnn candy oils.”

Something else that willnot change is the all-naturalbeef and pork that Kathy’shusband Dan raises andsells in the store. Hiller’sis known for great-tastingmeats with no addedhormones or antibiotics atgood prices. “I will alsoalways carry Walnut Creekcheeses. I only carry thebasic cheeses Swiss, Colby,Marble, Pepper Jack, andHabanero, but what I lackin variety, I make up in lowprices. “ This includesselling Troyers TrailBologna at a bargain price$3.60 a pound.

Something else recentlyadded and doing wellfor Hiller’s is Leanin Treegreeting cards. “I carry anice selection of mostlyfunny cards at $0.99 eachand $2.49 each. I lovethe Leanin Tree cardsespecially the funny oneswith bible verses on them.I personally like to sendfunny cards, but also

like sending ones witha scriptural saying; withLeanin Tree I can have bothwith a Christian selectionof birthday and get wellcards. I am waiting fora whole new display rackto arrive with nothing butbible-versed funny cards.”

ADVERTISEMENT - TheWeekleys will say a divinehand is behind the wheel oftheir automobile dealershipwhen asked who’s in charge.

“The Lord owns the place,”said Matt Weekley ofWeekley Chrysler DodgeJeep. “We just sign a fewchecks.”

Matt and his father, AlbertWeekley, credit God with thesuccess the business has hadover the past several decades. They also express a debtof gratitude to Weekley’sdedicated employees as wellas the support of the localcustomers. Both father andson believe the golden ruleapplies as much to customerservice in a business as itdoes to any other aspect oflife

Matt said it was hisgrandfather, A.M. Weekley, who instilled the Christianvalues and uncompromisingintegrity in his father andhimself that has helped thebusiness thrive over theyears.

Mason Weekley, a WorldWar I veteran, moved from

Caldwell to Butler in March1921 and started a repairshop on Traxler Avenuewith his half brother R.B.McCauley. In addition todoing auto repair, theysold used cars. A fewyears later, the brotherswere approached by anautomobile manufacturerand asked to become adealership. They beganselling cars made by Willy’sOverland, the manufacturerthat later became Jeep, andChevrolet.

“In 1927, A.M. Weekleybegan to sell Chrysler-Plymouth automobiles andstopped Chevrolet andWilly’s Overland models.Albert said that in thosedays, Chrysler automobileswere known for being ableto get up a hill better thanmost other makes. He saidhis father went door to doordemonstrating his cars, often to farmers. Albert saidhis father fell deathly illwith appendicitis in 1927and was off work severalmonths. Before then, thebusiness had been openseven days a week. After a

visit from a preacher, Albertsaid, his father acceptedJesus and promised to closeon Sundays if the Lordhealed him. A. M. Weekleyeventually recovered and thebusiness has been closedevery Sunday since.

In 1931, A.M. Weekleybought his partner’s share ofthe business, but McCauleystayed on as a mechanicuntil early 1960’s. In 1933,they moved to their currentlocation at 50 Main St., whichhad been home to a Model Tdealership.

Albert said the dealershipremained open duringWorld War II, when a lot ofdealerships throughout thecountry went out of business. He said rationing was on andthe most gasoline peoplewere allowed was three tofour gallons a week. “A lotof people were selling theircars,” Albert said. “My dadwould go to Cleveland andPittsburgh and bring backcars and sell them. That’swhat kept him going duringthe war.”

Albert said car production

actually stopped from 1942-46 so the raw materials couldbe dedicated toward thewar effort. When productionrestarted after the war, therewas a high demand for carsand people had to get on awaiting list. His father knewabout war from his ownexperiences, and did hisbest to make sure veteransreceived new cars. Accordingto Albert, one of the newcars after the war was thefirst Plymouth 4-door sedan, released in 1946. It sold for$1,164.

Albert joined the businessas a partner in 1954 andthe name changed to A.M.Weekley & Son. In the yearsthat followed, the agencycontinued to grow. In 1958,the Weekleys added on tothe original building with asales and service department.Matt said the 1950s weresomething of a boomtime for the dealership. It was also the decade inwhich hydraulic brakes, airconditioning and powersteering became fixtures inthe automobile industry.

The dealership added Dodge

to the line of vehicles in1970, and Jeep in 1990,both of which are made byChrysler.

“After that we added Jeep,”Albert said. “We startedsaying, ‘If Chrysler buildsit, Weekley sells it.’” SellingChrysler Plymouth vehiclesand Dodge vehicles at thesame dealership was unheardof at that time, Albert added.

In 2002, Matt became thethird generation of theWeekleys to become apartner. A few years lateranother addition was madeacross the street. Matt saidthere are currently 17 full-time employees, a numberof whom have been with the

company for over 40 years. He added that he and hisfather are very grateful for allthe support they’ve receivedfrom customers in Butler,Mansfield, Mount Vernon andAshland County.
