3.MARK NEEDED TO BUY A NEW SPORTS JACKET

One day last week, Mark decided he needed to buy a new sports jacket. Heknew that Macy's was having a big sale, so he decided to look there first.

Macy's is a large department store in New York that sells everything fromclothes to personal computers and televisions. The men's clothes are on thesecond floor, so Mark went right up to that floor as soon as he got to thestore. He told the sales clerk he was looking for a good buy on a wool sports

jacket. The sales clerk showed him the jackets that were on sale. Some of them were very nice; a few were imported from Italy, but Mark couldn't finda nice one in his size. The ones that fit him weren't very well-made andweren't made of 100% wool.

The sales clerk said they had a lot of other wool jackets there were selling atthe regular price. Well, it was either that or go to another store. Markthought about it for a few minutes and decided to check the jackets thatwere being sold at the regular price. He found one that he liked right away.It was made of beautiful wool and was imported from England, but it wasone of the most expensive jackets in the store. Mark decided not to buy ituntil he looked in a few other stores. He thought maybe he could findsomething a little cheaper somewhere else that he would like just as well.

13.THEY COULD BE SITTING ON THE BEACH

The Bensons are planning to take a vacation, but they're having troubledeciding where to go this year. Both Craig and Anne play a lot of golf. That'swhy they decided to go somewhere warm last year. They went to a resortthat a friend of Anne's knew about, and they really enjoyed themselves. They played golf every morning, and in the afternoons they relaxed by thepool.

They got to know some nice people, too. The first day that they were there,a man and woman came up and introduced themselves as Jim and PattyHarkness. They all had lunch together and found out that they were from thesame city and knew some of the same people. Anne and Patty spent a lot of time together, shopping and sightseeing. Before the Harknesses left forhome, they asked the Bensons to come to their house for dinner when theygot back. Since then, the Bensons and the Harknesses have gotten togetheroften and have become close friends.

This year, Craig has been a lot busier and won't be able to take as muchtime off for vacation. If Craig had more time, they'd go back to the sameplace, but he can only get away for a few days. Anne would like to gosomewhere with a nice beach. She loves to swim in the ocean and sit andrelax in the sun. That sounds good to Craig, but he'd like to be able to playsome golf, too. Right now, the travel agent is looking for a place they canboth agree on. 26.WE MAY HAVE A PROBLEM HERE!

Barbara: I'm calling about the apartment you have for rent. I just saw your ad in thenewspaper.

Landlady: Are you calling about the one-bedroom or the two-bedroom?Barbara: The two-bedroom. Is it still available?Landlady: Yes, but I've already gotten a lot of calls about it.Barbara: Well, I'm interested in finding out a little more about it. What floor is it on?Landlady: The second floor. It's in a two-story building right on Main Street, across from the

coffee shop.Barbara: Oh, great! That's right near my office. The ad said the rent is $850 a month. Does

that include utilities?Landlady: It includes heat, electricity and water -but not telephone, of course.Barbara: That would be all right, I guess, but I really can't afford to pay more than about

$900 a month, including telephone. How much is a one-bedroom apartment?Landlady: The one-bedrooms are $675, and I only have one left. It's a ground floor

apartment. Maybe you should think about renting that one instead of the two-bedroom.

Barbara: No. I’m moving out of a one-bedroom because it's too small. I need a bigger place.I think I'd like to look at the two-bedroom.

Landlady: Well, I have some other people who are interested in it, so if you want to see it,you'd better come this afternoon.

Barbara: I have one more question ...Are pets allowed?

Landlady: Sometimes. What kind of pet do you have?Barbara: Well, that's why I need a larger place. I have three cats and a dog!Landlady: Wait a minute! I'm going to have to think about this! Three cats and a dog! We
