dear ruckus makers, be icarus was founded with the desire to bring products from around the world that were created with a purpose to an online social marketplace. social enterprises worldwide are working to make the world a better place. consumers have a choice: continue to buy mass-produced products from global corporations who see social good as an after-thought or a line item deduction to avoid paying taxes, or we can choose to shop differently.

be icarus is a social enterprise that desires to initiate the people, ideas, and movements that will change the world. the following pages are our manifesto into how to inspire that change.

this winter consider making a purchase that will make a difference. share a gift with someone and tell them that gift’s story. it is a story that will be a different way to give this holiday season.

as consumers we can choose where we spend our money. that choice gives us great power to spark change. there are social enterprises enabling artisans in countries like China, Ecuador, and Uganda to craft wonderfully made products and earn a livable wage. these livable wages empower a new generation that can provide education for their children, water for their crops, and food for their nourishment.

this is no small feat. the social entrepreneurs that we feature are doing the hard work to begin a movement towards the meaningful.

Starfish Project restores hope to post-trafficked women in Asia. At Starfish Project, exploited women are empowered to recognize their value.Our jewelry business provides women with meaningful employment in a safe and supportive environment. Women who come to Starfish Project have been physically, emotionally, and sexually abused, and many see no way out of their situation. In addition to dignified employment, Starfish Project provides women with housing, counseling, educational opportunities, vocational training and health care. They begin to see themselves as worthy, capable, and loved. Many realize they can pursue a brighter future for themselves and their families. Starfish Project has reached hundreds of women since we began in 2006. With your help, we can reach even more.

In Jubilee , a neighborhood on the outskirts of Gonaives Haiti, people like Christianna, Phillipe, and Mafi are crafting baskets, journals, jewelry and other fashionable items, creating a local economy for the first time in generations.

These people are doing something quite remarkable: formulating the second story of their lives, swapping a history of handouts for a system of enterprise.

In Haiti, we are on the ground nurturing the growth and development of an inspiring group of artisans and entrepreneurs.

In the U.S., we are marketing their goods to help generate income for people who’ve proudly earned it.

Sseko began as a way to generate income for high potential, talented young women to continue on to university. And it is working! Every woman who has graduated from Sseko is currently pursuing her college degree or has graduated from university and is on her way to making our world a more beautiful place.

In addition to our university-bound team, Sseko also employs women from all walks of life. By creating an environment of dignity, honor and dedication, Sseko Designs provides the opportunity for women in East Africa to end the cycle of poverty and create a more equitable society.

A Ban Against Neglect breaks the cycle of poverty among young mothers in Ghana and empowers them toward the restoration of self, their communities and the environment.

Preventing Homelessness, Building Stronger Communities ABAN operates a two-year social enterprise empowerment program in Ghana, West Africa, that intervenes in vulnerable young mothers' lives before they become homeless. ABAN welcomes 20-30 women to our school each year from small towns surrounding the capital city of Accra.

When We Say Handmade in Ghana, We Mean It ABAN Community Employment (ACE) is the sewing center which creates all ABAN products. Since its launch in 2012, ACE has excelled as both a production center and a source of empowerment.
