The Jewish Museum - 1000 years of German-Jewish history. The Jewish Museum in Berlin (Jewish Museum Berlin) covers 1,000 years of German Jewish history. It was originally in Oranienbrugerstrasse but was closed by the Nazis in the years 1938th The museum is located in a very special building from 2001. The buil-ding alone is worth a visit. It is made of zig-zag and is popularly known as "flash". There is a special atmosphere when you enter the museum of the terrorist threat means that you are being scanned and searched before being admitted. The exhibition is beauti-ful, but also a bit boring. Well employs the museum with the Jews, but it can be hard to spot - 90% of the story goes on for Daniel Liebskind and his ideas behind the architec-ture, which is a bit disappointing because you expect a plethora of stories about Jews - then we must remember that it's called jew museum!

Just steps from the famous crossing point between the two Berlins, the Wall Museum—House at Check-point Charlie tells the story of the Wall and, even more riveting, the stories of those who escaped through, under, and over it. The homespun museum reviews the events leading up to the Wall's construc-tion and, with original tools and devices, plus recordings and photographs, shows how East Germans escaped to the West (one of the most ingenious contraptions was a miniature submarine). Exhibits about human rights and paintings interpreting the Wall round out the experience. Come early or late in the day to avoid the multitudes dropped off by tour buses. Monday can be particularly crowded, so watch out.

One of the goals of the Berlin Underworlds Association is to offer the public the pos-sibility to have a broad look into our city’s underground. With this in mind we rented the “Bunker B” in the Gesundbrunnen underground station from the BVG (Berlin Transit Authority). Because of the structu-res authenticity and good condition – for Berlin’s standards, we were able to have this historical site listed as a protected structure in 1999. Since then, our mem-bers have volunteered a total of around 10,000 hours into its reconstruction and refurbishment. All costs have been carried by the association, without public sup-port, help or any kind of money support. In line with our goals, we have used these rooms, which stretch out over four subter-ranean levels, to set up our “Berlin Under-worlds Museum”. Under this name we were able to take part in the “Long Night of the Museums” for the first time in 2005. Our exhibition, which is continuously being added to and improved, deals with the development of Berlin from an under-ground perspective .The main focus,

however, is civil defence in the Second World War, the effects of bomb war and modern archaeological finds of the twenti-eth century. Further rooms deal with the removal of rubble from the streets in the post-war period, and another with story of a card catalogue of forced labourers that was discovered by members of the asso-ciation in a forgotten bunker in the year 2000. As a result of our investigations a number of former forced labourers were able to receive reparation money. In an additional section of the museum, we have exhibitions that deal with the subjects: pneumatic postal system, brewery cellars and the underground railway system. Additionally we have a large museum archive and many items in storage that have in the past been lent out to other museums and film productions. The work-group “Building, Technic and Exhibition” supports the association’s efforts by reco-vering and, when necessary, restoring historical technical equipment.Should you, as a visitor to this website or our museum, have any artifacts (old suit-

UP-coming artist from

the countryside

When we met the cool young girl in her big white sofa, nothing in the world could indicate the fact that her best environment would be the streets of Berlin.

Jenna Louise Merck (25) has spent most of her childhood in the country-side of Germany, in the family’s vine-yard just north of the French border. Her family is the owners of a big cor-poration that for centuries has gone worldwide producing first class wines. And since Jenna was only a few month of age, she went with her father out in the fields, watching the grape stocks evolve.

The southern life in luxury has also made her lifestyle very privileged as she has had the opportunity to meet some of the most influentially people of Germany, which has also helped her further on in her life. And that is why we are here;

“How has your upbringing and back-ground affected your life today?”

“Well first of all I have only great mem-ories from my upbringing, and then they have all just helped me on my way

to where I am today.” She explains.

“Most of our readers may know you from the art scene for your beautiful work there, when did your interest for art begin?”

It started very early, when I was still living at home at the vineyard, I loved sitting outside painting the beautiful set-tings with my father who also was very creative, and together we had a lot of fun.

But of course it evolved as I grew up and became more aware of myself and my surroundings. And it was when I was about 17 I decided to move to Berlin to pursue my dream of living of my art.

At first I lived in a small single bedroom basement apartment, with all of my stuff packed up in the corner, and the only real furniture was my bed.

“Why did you choose to live like this when your family had so much to offer you?”

Ha ha! Well it isn’t always like that is it! Ofcourse I could live at home forever, but I needed to get out and be myself

and an individual. Especially when I had to be creative, and what better place than Berlin to do that?... It is the perfect town when you are a poor artist, and still it provides opportunities of the more wealthy kind. There are always high class people or foreigners on the look-out for new and upcoming art in Berlin, and the city is buzzing of inspiration.

Today I own my own big apartment in the middle of the city, but now and then I like to spent time in the “underground” of Berlin, to get inspiration. Because since I got success with my art, my cus-tomers are always asking for the street art I used to make in the beginning.

I can only advice everybody who has the opportunity of living in Berlin to grab it. If only for a week, it is all worth it when you are living underground. The amount of inspiration is indescribable.
