Teesside University Open Learning (Engineering) is the world’s leadingprovider of high quality flexible education to the engineering, manufacturing and petrochemical, oil and gas industries

Over the last 25 years 30,000 studentsworldwide, many unable to attendconventional classroom-basedcourses, have benefitted from our highquality, standalone, technical andengineering courses. Irrespective oftheir circumstances, at home, on anoilrig in the Caribbean, or in pipelineconstruction in the desert, fullycertified, internationally-recognisedqualifications can be delivered at thestudent’s own pace. Engineeringemployers, take note!

Students beginning studies at Level 2can progress through to a Level 5 HNDin a wide range of engineeringdisciplines. Students undertake therequisite number of units forqualifications at Levels 2 and 3awarded by City & Guilds or forEdexcel BTEC HNCs and HNDs atLevels 4 and 5 respectively. Bridgingmodules are available in key pre-requisite areas for those studentsseeking additional support.Programmes can be offered with onlinesupport to individuals or small groupsof independent learners from ourdedicated Teesside-based openlearning tutors. For thoseorganisations, who in themselves areeducation providers, like technician orvocational colleges, or industrialtraining units, tutorial support can bedevolved to such centres using ourcourse in a box mode. In either case, the pace of delivery and the degree oftutor support can be tailored toindividual learners.

More information on our provision andits benefits to you, as an individual oran organisation, is available on ourwebsite www.tees.ac.uk/tuole or by

contacting the Director of TeessideUniversity Open Learning(Engineering), Chris Hoggarth:

What is open learning?Open learning means studying at aconvenient location and over aconvenient time scale. Rather than giveup their job, students can continue tolive at home and earn while studying.Alternatively, employers may choose toset time aside for groups of employeesto study in the work place. Our openlearning materials are speciallyprepared and written by experiencedacademics, and providecomprehensive user-friendlyexplanations and self-assessmentquestions to aid study. Being completestudy packages, recourse to additionallearning materials such as textbooks isnot necessary to successfully completethe unit. Each module in the HNC/HNDportfolio is supported by access toTeesside University’s own e-learning,virtual learning environment.

How long will it take to get aqualification?Since open learning programmes allowthe student to work at their own pace, this varies. Typically, a City & GuildsLevel 2 or Level 3 qualification takesone year. Bridging Programmes (City &Guilds Level 3 supplementary studies)take around 3 - 6 months. HNCs/HNDstake between two and three years.

How are students supported? Each module within a course is brokendown into a series of lessons, delivered

to you in hardcopy or as an electronicfile. You are allocated a tutor/assessor,contactable by telephone, email andfax, who will be available to answer anyqueries you may have regarding yourstudy. Your tutor will also mark yourassessments and return them to youwith constructive comments.

Answers to other frequently askedquestions can be found atwww.tees.ac.uk/tuole.

The company point of view

‘The training I received from TeessideUniversity Open Learning (Engineering)

has given me the experience andknowledge I need to progress in my careeras an instrumentation and control systemsdesign engineer. The qualifications providegood employment opportunities and thepossibility of accessing higher education.'

Paul FalconerControl systems design engineer,

MWKL

'We have a number of people for whom the conventional college route tostudy has not been an option. Their work commitments and family life

have meant that the flexibility of having five years to complete the courseis manageable and allows time to develop a greater understanding of

each module and the satisfaction of achieving higher grades.

The material is of a very high standard and no other additional material, such as text books is required to complete the units. The support fromtutors at Teesside University is always available either by telephone or byemail. Assessments are quickly marked and appropriate feedback is

sent to the student.'

Colyn Baillie SearleIsle of Man Electricity Authority

'I'm very pleased by the level ofacademic study. I feel that I have

acquired useful technicalknowledge and skills.'

Rajendra Khadilkar Offshore maintenance planner,

Oil and gas industry

'The HNC Electrical and ElectronicEngineering course has helped me

tremendously in my work looking after andmaintaining one of the plasma microwaveheating systems, which involves a klystronmicrowave amplifier system, pressure

systems and cryo- systems.'

Higher National Certificates and DiplomasTeesside University Open Learning(Engineering) provides Edexcel-licenced, Teesside University HNC andHND awards in a range of engineeringand technology disciplines.

A Higher National qualification isinternationally accepted by industry asproof of your knowledge andunderstanding of your engineeringdiscipline, or combination ofdisciplines, enabling you to functioneffectively and efficiently at highertechnician and engineer level.

Teesside University Open Learning(Engineering) course titles include:

• Chemical Engineering• Electrical and Electronic Engineering• Instrumentation and ControlEngineering

• Mechanical Engineering • Petroleum Engineering• Process Engineering

All HNC and HND courses compriseindividual modules, and eachcompleted module will be awarded apass, merit or distinction. Moduleinformation is available atwww.tees.ac.uk/tuole.

Entry requirementsNormal entry requirements are a Level3 qualification in an appropriateengineering discipline, or equivalent. However, other qualifications andexperience are taken intoconsideration. We offer bridgingmodules in Mathematics and ProcessChemistry (each certificated by City &Guilds at Level 3), which prepare youfor HNC entry, if required. At the

discretion of Teesside University OpenLearning (Engineering) tutors, yourprevious experience or qualificationswill be considered.

PricesThe basic price for each moduleincludes all learning materials andtutorial support. A one-off registrationfee is payable. Current prices are onour website, www.tees.ac.uk/tuole.

AssessmentsYou must complete a number ofassignments and, for some units, practical work. The final assessment foreach unit is an interview with yourmodule tutor. Your work isauthenticated and your tutor confirmsthe grade of your award.
