Part I: Ohio People

ActorsOhio’s list of famous actors reads like a Who’s Who of Holly-wood. From legends like Paul Newman and Clark Gable to current box office draws George Clooney and Halle Berry, hundreds of Ohioans have made it big in the film industry.

Academy Award winner Clooney lived in the Cincinnati area as a child before moving across the Ohio River to Augusta, Kentucky. A high school baseball player, Clooney tried out for the Cincinnati Reds in 1977, but did not make the team. He attended the University of Cincinnati for a short time before heading west and starting his acting career on TV sitcoms.

Steven Spielberg is without a doubt the most influential movie director of our time. This Cincinnati native has won two Acad-emy Awards for Best Director (Schindler’s List, Saving Private Ryan). Some of his other films, especially Jaws, E.T., the Ex-tra-Terrestrial and the Indiana Jones films, have been smash hits. This explains Spielberg’s $3.6 billion net worth.

Bob Hope, Clark Gable, Doris Day, Dean Martin, Danny Thom-as and Paul Newman all are from Ohio. So are Hal Holbrook, Burgess Meredith, Roy Rogers, Jonathan Winters, Jamie Farr, Joel Grey, Martin Sheen, Rod Serling and Debra Winger.

Drew Carey paid homage to his hometown by making it the setting of The Drew Carey Show and popularizing the song Cleveland Rocks.

Oscar winner Halle Berry hails from Cleveland. She attended Bedford High School and was Miss Ohio USA in 1986. Berry portrayed Dorothy Dandridge, the first African-American wom-an to be nominated for a Best Actress Academy Award, in the 1999 HBO film Introducing Dorothy Dandridge. Dandridge, too, was a Cleveland native.

Other Ohioans who’ve made it big in acting include Toledo’s Katie Holmes; Nelsonville’s Sarah Jessica Parker; Cleveland’s Terrence Howard and Steve Harvey; Dayton’s Allison Janney and Rob and Chad Lowe; Bay Village’s Patricia Heaton; and Yellow Springs’ John Lithgow.

Ohio Crosswords

Made in OhioOhio may be a long way from Hollywood, but the film industry doesn’t seem to care. Many successful movies, in-cluding several Academy Award winners, have been shot in the state.

One of the most recent Ohio films is Carol, starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. This story, set in the early 1950s, is about a forbidden romance between a young shopgirl and an older woman who is going through a di-vorce. The movie was filmed in and around Cincinnati. Ohioans may recognize Eden Park, Hyde Park and down-town Cincinnati in the film. The film received six Academy Award nominations.

Mansfield played a huge role in the cable TV staple, The Shawshank Redemption. Though the film, starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman, is not set in Ohio, many scenes were filmed at the Ohio State Reformatory. Scenes taking place in the admittance rooms and the warden’s of-fice were filmed here. Prison cellblock scenes were not filmed at the Reformatory, but at a nearby Westinghouse factory that had closed.

Downtown Mansfield made an appearance in the film, as did Ashland. A key scene, in which Andy buries his letter to Red, was shot at an old oak tree in Lucas.

The Reformatory is now a tourist attraction, though not all the buildings remain. It was also used by Hollywood in Air Force One.

Other movies partially shot in Ohio include Rain Man, The Deer Hunter, Christmas Story, Major League, Happy Gilm-ore, Antwone Fisher, Spider-man 3, The Ides of March, Traffic, Fresh Horses, The Avengers, I, Alex Cross and Draft Day.

Part III: Ohio Activities

BusinessOhio is home to 27 Fortune 500 companies. Besides Procter & Gamble in Cincinnati, some of the other well-known large corporations headquartered in Ohio include Kroger (Cincinna-ti), Limited Brands (Columbus), Big Lots (Columbus), OfficeMax (Shaker Heights), Nationwide (Columbus), Goodyear Tire & Rubber (Akron), Sherwin-Williams (Cleveland) and the Dutch Boy Group (Cleveland).

Ohio was instrumental in the founding of the auto industry and continues to manufacture many tires, windshields and other components that show up on today’s vehicles. Frank Seiberling established the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Ak-ron in 1898. Two years later, Harvey S. Firestone opened the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company across town. While Fires-tone has since move to Japan, Goodyear remains in Ohio. The company, which has revenues of more than $18 billion a year, provides the tires used in NASCAR. In 2013, the company built a new Akron headquarters complex.

One of the more interesting Ohio businesses is the Longaberger Company. This Newark company creates hand-woven ma-ple wood baskets. Started in 1973 by Dave Longaberger, the company originated in Dresden and had sales of $1 billion at its peak. The company’s headquarters building on State Route 16 is a huge replica basket (the “Medium Market Basket”) and attracts more than 500,000 tourists a year.

The J.M. Smucker Company is a household name. This Orrville business was founded in 1897 and has continued to make jel-lies, jams, ice cream toppings, peanut butter and other products in Ohio since then.

Another very popular Ohio company is Arby’s. One of the larg-est quick-service sandwich chain in the U.S., the restaurant was founded in Boardman in 1964. The first Arby’s served only roast beef sandwiches, potato chips and beverages. The chain now has more than 3,300 restaurants across the world.
