Be Still And Know That I Am God

Psalm 46:1-11 God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble. (2) Therefore we will not fear, Even though the earth be removed, And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; (3)

Though its waters roar and be troubled, Though the mountains shake with its swelling. Selah (4) There is a

river whose streams shall make glad the city of God, The holy place of the tabernacle of the Most High. (5) God is in the midst of her, she shall not be moved; God shall

help her, just at the break of dawn. (6) The nations raged, the kingdoms were moved; He uttered His voice, the

earth melted. (7) The LORD of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our refuge. (8) Come, behold the works of the

LORD, Who has made desolations in the earth. (9) He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two; He burns the chariot in the fire. (10) Be still, and know that I am God; I will be

exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth! (11) The LORD of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is

our refuge.

SLOW DOWNA. Have you ever passed something by in your life

and later wished you had stopped, slowed down, or paused to take it in more fully?

B. The more of our time that’s crammed into boxes of decreasing size—the work box, the exercise box, the family and friends box, and, if we’re very lucky, the box left over just for us—the higher the unlikelihood of a spontaneous or coincidental experience.

C. Appalachian Trail hikerD. Sometimes, we have to make the time to look

up. You know, I think of Moses, catching sight of the burning bush:

SLOW DOWNE. Exodus 3:1-6 Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro

his father-in-law, the priest of Midian. And he led the flock to the back of the desert, and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. [2] And the Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire from the midst of a bush. So he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, but the bush was not consumed. [3] Then Moses said, "I will now turn aside and see this great sight, why the bush does not burn." [4] So when the Lord saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, "Moses, Moses!" And he said, "Here I am." [5] Then He said, "Do not draw near this place. Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground." [6] Moreover He said, "I am the God of your father--the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob." And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look upon God.

SLOW DOWN

F. This is a wonderful scene. But it’s a good thing some of us weren’t Moses, because chances are we would have been in way too big a rush to “turn aside,” and would have missed the miracle all together! We’d best make some out-of-the-box time ... just in case we miss something really important.

I. Psalm 46:10A. Be still and know that I am God – supreme, creator, controller,

judge of the living & dead. Ezekiel 20:19 I am the LORD your God: Walk in My statutes, keep My judgments, and do them;

B. Be still and know that I am – existing one, eternal. John 8:58 Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM."

C. Be still and know – knowledge is gained through stillness (movement & speech) (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). John 8:32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."

D. Be still – free of distraction. Colossians 3:2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.

E. Be – really exist, quality existence. Genesis 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.

II. Five necessary spiritual activities

that being still helps us to do.

II. FIVE NECESSARY SPIRITUAL ACTIVITIES

A. Being still helps us to get in the right attitude. Job 37:14 "Listen to this, O Job; Stand still and consider the wondrous works of God.

B. Being still helps us to see God at work for us. Exodus 14:13-14 And Moses said to the people, "Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which He will accomplish for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall see again no more forever. (14) The LORD will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace."

II. FIVE NECESSARY SPIRITUAL ACTIVITIES

C. Being still helps us to see righteous reasoning. 1 Samuel 12:6-7 Then Samuel said to the people, "It is the LORD who raised up Moses and Aaron, and who brought your fathers up from the land of Egypt. (7) Now therefore, stand still, that I may reason with you before the LORD concerning all the righteous acts of the LORD which He did to you and your fathers:

II. FIVE NECESSARY SPIRITUAL ACTIVITIES

D. Being still helps us to receive instruction. Numbers 9:6-8 Now there were certain men who were defiled by a human corpse, so that they could not keep the Passover on that day; and they came before Moses and Aaron that day. (7) And those men said to him, "We became defiled by a human corpse. Why are we kept from presenting the offering of the LORD at its appointed time among the children of Israel?" (8) And Moses said to them, "Stand still, that I may hear what the LORD will command concerning you."

E. Being still helps us to come to know God. Psalm 46:10 Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!

BE STILLA. Be – do you have a really, quality

existence?

B. Be still – are you free from distraction?

C. Be still and know – are you learning as a result of being still in movement & speech?

D. Be still and know that I am – do you realize the eternal nature of God?

E. Be still and know that I am God – do you recognize the supremacy of God?
