This year is the final stretch of the Library’s 2-year comprehensive renovation project to ensure it is a dynamic shared community space for generations to come. The east collection, foyer, learning commons, and 4th Street improvements will be completed by the 4th of July. The two entrances, the outdoor plazas, and the regional history reading room will be completed by November. . . . and the whole Library will be RENEWED!

We began 2019 with a deep breath: We have 16 months of construction behind us and 10 months ahead of us to complete The Community Library renovation! The Library continues to operate fully while it is in flux, and we continue to have an average door count of 10,000 visitors each month. Now that more than 60% of the renovation is complete, you might say we can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

You might also say that the tunnel itself has become a highlight.

In December, we built a temporary tunnel through the east end of the building to provide safe passage around the construction zone where the floor is getting reinforced and the ductwork is being replaced. The temporary tunnel is plain plywood – a tantalizing blank slate. So, we put out markers and asked you, our patrons, to write your favorite book recommendations on the walls.

Within days, the walls became a raucous celebration of reading, with hundreds of book titles (and some smiley faces and little birds) graffitied in bright colors: “Princess and the Pea” in big, red, uneven letters just one foot from the floor; NARNIA scrolled fancily in green about mid-way up the wall; And the Mountains Echoed framed by a big red heart; and, perhaps subversively, in small tidy print near the top of the wall, Atlas Shrugged.

We worried that the tunnel would be an inconvenience. But together we have made it a text, one we want to linger and read. It’s an example of what the sociologist Emile Durkheim called “collective effervescence,” a spontaneous communal act of creativity.

Those plywood walls will come down soon, but the stories will continue to effervesce here at the Library as we circulate and animate them, together.
