As the premier jeweler for engagement, Tiffany takes its celebrated diamonds directly to the customer with the Tiffany & Co. Engagement Ring Finder, the jeweler’s first iPhone® application. In response to a growing customer desire for mobile and interactive shopping, the app offers users the tools for selecting the perfect Tiffany diamond engagement ring, from viewing the range of styles to learning about the superior qualities of Tiffany diamonds.

The app includes an accurate Ring Sizer, the first tool of its kind from a jeweler, that lets users determine their size by placing an actual ring directly on the screen and aligning it with the correct circle in the guide. Browsing the collection according to shape, setting, metal or design is equally simple. The rings are shown true-to-size and each style may be viewed with diamonds of six different carat sizes. Users may zoom in on a ring’s exquisite details, pair the rings with wedding bands, and save or share their favorites via e-mail, Facebook® and Twitter®.

Available from the App Store.

At Brides Etc we are always talking about the journey from your engagement to your wedding day but forget how special that moment where the ring gets presented to you really is. So to celebrate your engagement we have put together some of our readers special stories of how that moment came about. It is wonderful to hear of the highs and lows some of you went through and to know that “love actually is all around”.

Will You ?acted on it until we randomly bumped into each other in a local pub one night. That was it - non stop talking and laughing from there. So some 6 and half years later, we are totally happy. We still laugh like we first used to and I can’t imagine that changing now. My mum moved to Missouri USA a few years ago. I finally decided (after getting over my fear of flying) that I would make the long journey to see her. Burt organised to come and join me for the last 2 weeks I was there, so I flew out with my grandma Paula. Seeing my mum and everyone was amazing, having never been to America it was all new and so exciting, she lives in a beautiful area. After I had been there a week or two, on Friday the 6th April I woke to someone knocking on the cabin door. I was in my PJ’s, I had the bed hair of a lion and wasn’t expecting any guests! As I got up I could see the outline of a tall man, as I got to the door there was another urgent knock. I opened the door and there he was - it was Burt! He was on one knee but I was so surprised to see him I leapt on him, I couldn’t stop hugging him. So there we both were, on the decking of my cabin, both on our knee’s hugging, I could feel him shaking but I was so overwhelmed, I looked over his shoulder and my mum, Pete, grandma and uncle Doug are all there watching. At this point Burt says to me ‘I need you to stand up’ and I said ‘why?’ He replied ‘I need to ask you a question’. It then dawned on me why he was on one knee! As I stood up he said ‘I had it all written down, I’ve forgotten what I wrote but I love you Ellie and I want to ask if you will marry me?’ and I of course said ‘yes!’ He has completely blown me away and it still feels surreal now over a month later! Whatta man!

Sam and Andy (from Blackcarat Ltd)

We first met aged 16 at college; we all hung around together, as kids do. It took a while for us to get together, in fact Andy moved to Essex in the summer holidays at the end of our first year and I didn’t really think we would keep in touch. But we dated even though there was

Cally and ChrisMy hubby proposed to me at my favourite restaurant - Le Talbooth in Dedham. What I found sweet was that I collect Tiffany charms and over dinner he handed me a tiffany box and said ‘there is something in here for you’ to which I replied ‘Ooooo... I bet it’s that collectors Tiffany charm I’ve been after for a while!’ I then continued to open the box and when I opened it, inside was a Tiffany’s charm that had the words ‘Marry me’ on it. In disbelief, I looked at him as he came to where I was sitting and got down on one knee with my beautiful engagement ring (which is an exact replica of what my Mums engagement ring was the one I had always said I would want if I ever got married!) I immediately said ‘YES!’ and we both started crying!

Ellie and BurtI have been with my partner Burt since September 2005. He has always had a romantic streak, something that I wasn’t used to, and he always went that extra distance in making me feel special. When we met there was an immediate connection but neither of us

Will You ?from Essex to Leicester, where I went to university. After what seemed like a lifetime apart I graduated, got a job and Toby and I moved into our very first house! We loved setting up home and soon our weekends were filled with decorating and visiting DIY shops, we were just so happy to be able to see each other every day.

In November last year Toby surprised me with a weekend away to celebrate our 10 year anniversary – I was so excited as it was the first trip that we had really taken since moving in. I got it in my head that we were going to York so imagine my surprise when we boarded the Eurostar to Paris! When we woke up on the day of our actual anniversary it was really foggy, I kept thinking how strange it was that every 5 minutes Toby kept looking out of the window to see if it had disappeared. Thankfully, the fog soon lifted and we could carry on with our day as planned followed by a night time trip to the top of the Eiffel Tower. Looking back on everything now it seems funny to think that I hadn’t picked up on all these funny little signs but I was completely surprised and didn’t expect it at all when later that night Toby dropped to one knee over the Parisian lights and asked me to marry him. I was so happy, it was so unexpected but something I knew we both wanted. Toby had then planned a romantic boat cruise along the River Seine where we happily sipped champagne and phoned our excited families. Upon our return back home our parents had arranged a little surprise party for us with just our immediate family and a few close family friends. Everyone was so happy for us and we were totally overwhelmed with all the well wishes everyone sent us, our family and friends had even filled our entire house with decorations, balloons and wedding magazines including my favourite - Brides Etc! Now we are happily planning our wedding and are counting down the days to the 20th April next year where I finally get to marry my not-so-geeky Dawson!

Sorry we couldn’t print everyone’s story but thanks so much for sending them in!

a distance (I was in Sussex, 80 miles away). We continued to date throughout my college years and for much of my university years. But being at Uni in Sheffield meant an even bigger distance so sadly we decided to go our separate ways.Fast forward 15 years… and a whole lot of living and life experience later. In May 2008 I found Andy’s sister on Facebook. I was so curious as to what had happened to him, I plucked up the courage to ask her. The reply came back that he was fine and that he had never got over me and that he was single. We arranged to meet in London and then again at Bluewater, all the while emailing each other the most amazing long emails and getting to know each other all over again. It was a bit odd to start with. We’d both changed, grown up, but both in similar ways and with more in common now than before. One thing led to another and we were properly dating again. By August 2008, just 3 months in, we knew how we felt and that we had to just get on with it. We knew each other already so we felt we could speed up the relationship to the next stage. We booked a holiday to France and stayed in a lovely rural cottage on a farm, off a lane in the middle of nowhere, en-route to nowhere.Andy knew he wanted to propose that week but was trying to find the ‘perfect’ moment. It came one early evening towards the end of the holiday. We were sat on a little mound on the grass in the private garden staring into the distance. He got me to stand up. He went onto one knee and asked “will you marry me?” to which the answer was an immediate “yes”. He didn’t have a ring, but that wasn’t necessary, we were now engaged. It took months to find the prefect ring. I shopped in Hatton Garden, Tiffany’s, and all the high street shops… we eventually found a platinum diamond solitaire in Ernest Jones that ticked all my boxes (modern, straight sides, a bit different) and paid a premium for it. We continued to hurry things along and got married in the January, had a baby 9 months later and now, four years into our second-chance relationship and inspired by the difficulty I had in finding the right engagement ring, we run a successful wedding ring website together.

Sophie and TobyI met Toby when I was 15, in typical Dawson’s Creek fashion he was the boy next door. He became good friends with my brother and was always playing football in our garden. I always thought he was really lovely and was really excited when one day out of the blue he asked me on a date to Pizza Hut and the Cinema! Over the course of the next few years we stayed as close as ever as poor Toby after a long week at work had to endure a 4 hour commute

A lot in Common…Tom and I both met at 6th form when we were both 18, like most teenagers we would just have the odd chat in the common room in passing, I didn’t know him that well, when one day out of the blue he asked me on a date! We continued dating all throughout 6th form and even continued to see each other while we were at different universities. Tom was studying medicine in London and I was based at Nottingham University studying languages. The distance was hard and we were both kept busy with our degrees, but we always made time to see each other. During my third year I moved to France for part of my degree, so we had to work a little harder to see each other, but it just made the time that we did spend together even better. Plus we had the gorgeous French countryside to explore! After I finished my degree I then followed Tom to Australia where he was lucky enough to be offered a work placement, after his placement ended we then travelled around Australia for 6 weeks before Tom had to return to sit his final exams.

He proposed…eventually! We had been living together for about 4 years when Tom asked my parents for my hand in marriage. I however, didn’t get asked for another 6 months. It was actually a bit of a running joke in my family– every time Tom decided to book a weekend away my mum would get excited thinking that this would be the time and nothing would materialise. It took Tom six attempts to ask me, apparently every time he went to ask me something would get in the way and spoil his attempt. I was always unsuspecting and enjoyed all the weekends away I was being treated to! Eventually Tom popped the question on a weekend away to Cambridge alongside the beautiful canal.

Country bumpkin at Heart! We wanted a summer, country wedding. Having the wedding at home meant we could do everything our own way and it was more personal. I also wanted to spend the morning of the wedding getting ready at my family home. Plus the more local we stayed the more hands we could enrol to help us with the planning. It’s a good job we have such a talented bunch of friends! They helped us with everything from the flower arranging, invitations, bridesmaid dress-making and making our fantastic cake!

The Night BeforeThe night before the wedding I stayed at my parents’ house and Tom stayed at our home in Chelmsford with his best man. Tom and the ushers all went out for a meal and drinks the night before while the bridesmaids stayed over with me for bubbly and last minute jobs! I was so excited and knew I wouldn’t be able to sleep a wink.

Page 21: BE15 For Web

The big day….The big day finally arrived and we couldn’t have asked for a better day – it was fantastic. The weather was perfect - dry and sunny which was lucky, being a marquee in the garden! Everything went to plan and we both really enjoyed celebrating with all our friends and family.I don’t think I could pick one special moment as the whole day was really special. The most important thing to us was that everyone important was able to share the day with us! They were with us from the beginning and all worked really hard to ensure that everything went to plan and even managed to arrange a few surprises for us such as champagne stowed in our vintage car for us to have on the journey from the church to the reception.

From bride to bride…. Relax and enjoy the day – and try to remember every second as it goes so quickly. Fortunately we have lots of photos to remember every part of the day – which is essential as you can’t take it all in at the time!

How should brides prepare their hair ready for the wedding?

In the months running up to the wedding, try to keep you hair in the best condition you can, always use the best quality products you can afford – I always recommend products from the Redken range. If you want to grow your hair, have a little trim every few weeks to prevent it splitting, but make sure the hairdresser knows you are growing it for your wedding. If you have colour or highlights have them done professionally just before the wedding but to be on the safe side, don’t go for anything new or different. It is a myth that hair needs to be ‘dirty’ to make it stay up! I always advise my brides to shampoo and condition their hair as usual either the night before or if they prefer, the morning of the wedding. Hair is usually less slippery if washed the night before, however, many girls want to wash their hair on the day, if you are having it professionally styled, the stylist will just want the hair to be clean and dry with no styling products.

What hair styles suit round, oval, square and heart shaped faces?

When choosing how to wear your hair for your wedding it is important to consider what will flatter your face shape.

Round Face:- You need to elongate so avoid too much width at the sides create some height at the crown and keep the front soft either in a side fringe or hair swept to the side across your forehead this will narrow the face.

Oval Face:- If you have an oval face shape you are lucky as most styles will suit you. Keep the width and height balanced

Square Face:- Avoid styles where your hair is pulled straight back, you need to cut the corners so a side fringe or the front hair brought across will hide an angular hairline. A square jawline can be softened with hair around your face so a half up style would work well or if you want to go all up, keep some tendrils of hair to soften the jawline.

Heart Shaped Face:- Keep the hair narrow at the temples, a little height works well here to draw the eye up. If your jawline is narrow, some width behind your ears will be more flattering.

What is the most popular bridal hair looks at present?

Although I’m still seeing a lot of brides who want to wear a tiara and their hair in loose curls around their shoulders, vintage looks are also very popular right now. Low nape buns with soft pinned in curls and soft waves or twists at the sides, or a bit more structured 40’s style look incorporating ‘victory rolls’ or quiffs, this looks great with a birdcage veil. For Bridesmaids it’s got to be the side bun relaxed and not too perfect, this is so versatile because the front of the hair can be styled however it suits each girl and that keeps everyone happy!

What tips would you give to ensure hair styles last throughout the big day?

The answer is to make sure it is prepared properly before styling either up or down. I always use a good quality gel spray such as Indola 4+4 and prepare the hair with either heated rollers, tongs or straighteners. The hair should then be allowed to cool before styling. Plenty of hair spray is also a must I love to use ‘w8less’ by Rusk because it give really good hold without feeling like cardboard! If you really want you hair to look good all day and into the evening, the safer option is to wear it up! Girl’s often tell me their hair is ‘too heavy’ to stay up but if it has been properly prepared and professionally pinned up, it will not fall down.If you want to wear your hair down in curls but it’s fine or limp, the addition of clip in hair extensions will help to support it so that the curls last longer.

Would you recommend hair extensions, if hair is too short to complete an up do style?

I am often contacted by brides who wish their hair was longer or thicker, they imagine they don’t have as much choice for their wedding hair as girls with long thick hair. Not true..... There is so much that can be done not only to maximise a brides own hair but by adding some discreet little hair pieces which have been perfectly colour matched it is possible to have the hair you dream of for your wedding day. Your wedding hairstylist should be able to advise you and either tell you what.

of you to check you like the final effect. Bold lipstick colours will always require more ‘maintaining’ on the day, however, if it’s the right colour for you then, one or two extra lipstick applications will be worth it!The thing to remember with bridal make-up is that your wedding day photos will be a constant reminder of how you looked on your special day and you want to love the results whenever you look back at them. Personally, I would recommend going for a classical bridal make-up look that will not date your photos.

What would you say is the most natural eye lash look, strip, individual or lash extensions?

Both options can provide a ‘natural’ look providing you select fine lashes that are not too obvious and are correctly applied. Strip offer a quick, easy and affordable option and most importantly do not damage your own eyelashes. The down side is they need to be removed at the end of the wedding day. Individual lash extensions are a great option if you have the time and budget for them. They will need to be maintained and I recommend professional removal otherwise you will be inclined to pick them off thus damaging your own eyelashes. If you are honeymooning straight after the wedding day the advantage is you have the same effect for a further few weeks. All eyelash extensions can be trimmed to give you a natural look.

Are there any products that brides can use to hold there make up in place?

Yes there many products that can hold make-up in place. Firstly there are primers, which go over your moisturiser but under your foundation. They help prepare the skin, smoothing out any fine lines, open pores and some can help combat oily breakthroughs. My favourite for a normal skin is Estee Lauders ‘Matte Perfecting Primer’. For an oily skin or enlarged pores I always use Benefits ‘Porefessional’ which has more of a balm consistency and is perfect for this skin type. A good powder will help to set your foundation, helping it to stay in place too. On most skin types I use Estee Lauder’s Double Wear Mineral Rich Loose Powder. Lastly, there are Make-Up Sprays which go on at the very end to help hold the make-up in place and prevent any smudging. In my professional make-up kit I always have Urban Decay’s ‘All Nighter” which is their long lasting make-up setting spray. To use, you simply hold it several inches away from your face and spritz it over the entire face, wait several seconds for it to dry and repeat several times.

And finally what should brides carry in there make up bags for wedding day touch ups?

If you are having your make-up professionally applied, all that should be required is your lip product for touching up whether that be lipgloss or lipstick. I always use long lasting products and generally this would not be required until after you have eaten your wedding breakfast (ie just before your evening guests arrive). If you are applying your own make-up, it addition to the lip product, it may be useful to have your powder compact with you or blotting papers to absorb any shine through the T-Zone.

How should we prepare skin for wedding day make up?

Ideally you want to be carrying out a simple skin care routine of cleanse, tone & moisturise. However, I always recommend that Brides are realistic with what they have time for and if they are short of time it’s always worth cutting a few corners rather than doing nothing. For instance if you know that after a night out or a hard day at work you will not feel like using a traditional cleanser, toner and moisturiser, cheat and use make-up remover wipes for these occasions and then apply your moisturiser. Far better to do this than go to bed in your make-up! If you are close to the wedding day, don’t suddenly undertake a whole new skin care routine. Stick to a range of products that you know will not irritate your skin as the last thing you need in the lead-up to your big day is an allergic reaction. Whilst a premium brand in a department store is extremely alluring; if it’s outside of your budget you will not be able to maintain it and are more likely to skip one of the essential stages. Supermarkets stock a great range of affordable skin care products and go for one that has a cleanser, toner and moisturiser for day use (ideally with SPF) and a night cream too. If over the age of 25, consider an eye cream. Your skin type will dictate what products you should go for. Although generally, if you have normal/dry skin go for a cream /fluid cleanser, and if your skin is oily and/or prone to spots go for a facial wash instead (the Tea Tree ones are great for this skin type). A day cream will have a much lighter consistency and is more suited for applying make-up over. A night cream has restorative properties and is therefore of a thicker consistency. The skin around your eyes is completely different to the rest of your face hence the need for a separate eye cream. Lastly, ensure you drink plenty of water to keep your skin fully hydrated.

Is there anything you recommend brides to do the weeks running up to the day to prevent spots?

Drink plenty of water (as mentioned above) and maintain your skin care routine. If you are having your make-up professionally applied your Make-Up Artist will not be fazed by a spot. However, if you are applying your own make-up ensure you have the right type of concealer to cover sufficiently and apply powder over the top (this can be repeated several times if necessary) and then lastly apply your foundation. Avoid a light fluid concealer which is ideally suited to cover under the eye area but well worth having in your make-up kit too.Although relaxing; avoid having a facial too close to the wedding day as you may find you end up with a few spots several days later. Tea Tree oil is a great product to have to hand should you end up with a spot if not, toothpaste (which has a drying effect on the spot).

Would you ever recommend brides to wear bold colours on their wedding day?

Yes, if that is your style or your dress suits a bold colour. However, if you are unsure, have a trial run (even if you are applying your own make-up) and get a friend to take photos

Classic EleganceThink Breakfast at Tiffany’s, diamonds and crisp white table cloths. This is one theme that will never date and one that is sure to sparkle through the decades. During the summer try using fresh peonies and neutral greens to create that fresh earthly atmosphere and in the winter add a touch of romance with glinting fairy lights and glimmering candles. Venue stylists Mediterranean occasions believe that the secret to creating this look is to keep it simple with of key accessories and not over dress the venue. “Use high polished cutlery as this will catch the light and look sharp against the table linen. The use of crystals and candelabras will also help reflect simplicity and elegance and create that true Hollywood glamour look. When we first speak to a couple we will ask them to give us a vague idea on what they are looking for. We then take their ideas and invite them along to our showroom where we have dressed a table and the room based on the guidelines they have given us. Together we then build on that look and experiment with different props until we have created their desired look.”

Years ago weddings were such a simple affair, married in the local church followed by knees up at the local pub or village hall, back then brides would have been lucky to see a cotton table cloth and their cake was probably the handy work of Auntie Sue. Nowadays, the modern bride

is spoilt for choice, lost in a world of themes, favours, and centre pieces that even the most

organised of brides-to-be can be seen running from a wedding show in a panicked sweat! Well fear not!

The team at Brides Etc have been busy researching the most popular wedding themes of the last few years and

have navigated through the maze wedding props and ideas to bring you the very best of Classic Elegance, Monochrome,

Exotic Fantasy and of course Vintage Chic!

Vintage ChicVintage Chic has undoubtedly been one of the most popular themes of

the last few years with brides getting creative with bunting, tipis and birdcages. It is also one of the most versatile trends that we are seeing. Brides can go all out with bunting and homemade jam to create that happy-go-lucky country bumpkin feel or those just looking to add a twist of girly flair to the day can do so by adding a few delicate accessories and key vintage staples until they get the desired result they are happy with. Vintage hire specialist Stephanie Quilliam of Serendipity Street adds “With inspirational blogs and home spun weddings, couples are thinking more creatively. This is where vintage really takes off. Weather the theme is from a certain era or just the essence of an English country fair. To have a few key elements like apple crates filled with lavender, tin baths for your beer and picnic hampers filled with apples. Maybe an old writing desk to display your guest book, along with a few vintage frames and chandeliers hanging from trees. We have a photo booth which has a screen, couple of chairs and a trunkful of props, this is something I’d suggest you try and put together for your own vintage wedding.

Exotic FantasyPlay with a carnival of colours and sensuous fabrics to take you deep into the Arabian night. Forget the favours and add flavour to your wedding with heady incense and an aromatic selection of meze dishes. Keep things fun and frivolous with low cushioned seating and daring candlelight and your guests will be likening your wedding to a night in the Sahara desert. Top local company Exotic Marquees can assist you in finding the perfect marquee for your wedding “we offer couples beautiful hand blocked Indian interior linings to our natural canvas Indian marquees that have the traditional scalloping and tassels that move in the breeze. Alternatively we can offer the stunning vibrant colours of Moroccan marquees, complete with the authentic glass or pierced lamps. Any of our marquees can come complete with low seating for the couples daring to be different, or for the more practically minded we offer lovely lime washed chairs with round or oblong tables. To make a fabulous impression as guests arrive for the reception we have some beautiful small pagodas for serving the champagne on the lawn, also for later why not have a chill out area so your guests can relax and soak up the atmosphere after the meal?

MonochromeDaring yet classy, the monochrome theme will give your wedding day the edgy contemporary twist that you’ve been craving. Keep it simple with black chair cover sashes and dainty table accessories or step it up with dramatic candelabras and sweeping ceiling drapes. James Robibson of The Wedding Creative comment’s that the key to keeping this look striking is “to stay focused. It’s very easy to get side tracked with ideas and items that don’t fit the colours of the scheme, but the overall look will be much greater if you can resist. If needed you can always add small hints of a colour but make sure it’s only one colour.”

Dating back to the 13th century, The Grasshopper Inn has recently been refurbished into a stunning wedding venue. Full of original character and finished with modern touches, this venue is an eclectic mix of old and new.

Upon entering the Tudor Suite most couples will be struck by medieval feel, partly due to the romantic wrought iron chandeliers which hang gloriously from the beamed ceilings as well as the stunning sweeping staircase from which brides will appear before they descend down the aisle. Why not enjoy a Robin Hood themed banquet with goblets and court jesters? Whether simple and elegant or bold and adventurous is your thing, the Tudor Suite offers a great canvas to get creative.

During the summer months take advantage of the beautiful terraced garden which is tiered like a wedding cake (for want of a better way to describe it) the outdoor setting offers couples daring to be different the opportunity to have an outside wedding from start to finish. Seat your top table on the highest tier and overlook your day from the top of your very own castle. Shrouded in trees and twinkling fairly lights, the outdoor space offers guests the opportunity to eat, drink and dance under the stars.

After the evenings celebrations are over why not have your nearest and dearest stay in one of the exquisitely furnished nine boutique hotel rooms and have your gest fight over who will be lucky enough to bathe in the £25,000 chrome bath tub!

How did you meet?Toby and I met in 2004 when I was 15 and he was 17. At the time he was the base player in a band and I went to a gig he was doing. I remember saying ‘he is gorgeous’ to my sister as he walked across the room!

How did he/she propose?Toby asked me to meet him at the park after work. I arrived to find my baby boy Charley sitting on a rug, a picnic hamper of goodies, bubbles on ice, bunting reading ‘MARRY ME’ and Toby on one knee with my engagement ring. It was very special!

What were your initial ideas on what you wanted for the wedding day? (For example, time of year, theme, colours etc)

We decided on a spring/summer wedding. I did some research on wedding blogs and looked through magazines for inspiration. My initial ideas involved very light pinks and creams, with a romantic vintage theme. I made mood boards and as I was flicking through magazines I cut bits out and stuck them on the mood board.

What did you both do the night before the wedding?

Toby stayed at our home in Colchester with his 2 best men. They ate fish and chips and had an early night!!!!I was with my parents and rest of my family at a gorgeous barn we rented close to Yaxley Hall. There were 20 of us staying at the barn including my little boy.

Tell us about the wedding planning.Toby was responsible for the photographer, videographer and band. I left it totally to him and he did a fantastic job!We searched for venues first and when we saw Yaxley Hall we knew it was the one! It was a beautiful country venue that had a lovely homely feel to it. As the planning progressed I saw some tutu skirts for my flower girls, I imagined them wearing them. When they arrived they were a blush colour, described as ‘vintage pink which set the colour scheme!I added personal touches to the day by decorating wooden freestanding table numbers with a distressed look. For name places I used brown parcel tags and attached a handmade corsage to them. We attached shabby chic white hearts to the chairs in the marquee and used white picture frames for the table plan. Continuing the vintage theme we scattered birdcages around the marquee which were draped in ivy and cream roses and we had cream vintage suitcases for our cards and gifts.

Page 51: BE15 For Web

pg 51

Tell us about the wedding day.Toby:I met my Dad, my 2 best men, and usher for a full English breakfast!!! We then travelled to the venue we had booked for our Wedding night, a beautiful converted barn with a balcony overlooking an orchard. I gave them their thank you gifts – engraved hip flasks reading ‘best man for a day, best friend for a lifetime’ and ‘I get by with a little help from my friends. After getting ready we left for the church and waited outside in the sunshine greeting our guests. I felt nervous but also excited about the arrival of my bride.

Hettie:My little boy woke as at 6.30am. We got dressed and went downstairs for breakfast. Our hairdresser arrived at the barn at 7.30am. Make up was also started (one of my bridesmaids is a makeup artist!) We then made our way to Yaxley Hall where there was a champagne brunch waiting for us. I gave my bridesmaids and maid of honour their thank you gifts. I then had my make up done before getting dressed. The videographer and photographer were there the whole time and were fantastic. It was lovely to know all these special moments were being recorded. Once we were all ready we went downstairs to find the vintage cream Morris minor convertible waiting. The bridesmaids went to the church and I had a few moments with my wonderful Dad before it returned for us.I didn’t feel nervous, just excited! We asked our sisters to do our readings – one of my sisters and one of Toby’s. The service was amazing and I walked out of the church elated that I was Toby’s wife.Toby and I went back to Yaxley Hall in the Wedding car, greeted by champagne, pimms and our wedding Butler Richard, who was so attentive throughout the day. Our guests enjoyed playing croquet in Yaxley Hall grounds whilst sipping on champagne and eating delicious canapés. We kept our professional photos to the minimum as we wanted the photography to reflect a more reportage style, which allowed more time for us to also enjoy the drinks reception with our guests! At the Wedding Breakfast Toby was keen to have speeches first so he could relax during supper. Toby surprised everyone with a wonderful speech – he made a film that had the whole marquee in tears, including me!The weather was fantastic, the sun shone all day. Our guests took full advantage of the beautiful grounds of Yaxley Hall and the vintage ice cream cart, which arrived after the main course. At 8pm our evening guests arrived and we had first dip of our white chocolate fountain before cutting our fabulous cupcake wedding cake. Our cake toppers were 3 very sweet wooden birds – one for Toby wearing a bowtie, a pink one for me wearing a veil and a tiny one for our little boy. He was very much part of our special day. Our first dance was to a cover by Natasha Bedingfield of Snow Patrol Chasing Cars. During the evening we decided on serving a cheese board, which was delicious. At the end of the night our Wedding Butler and Best Men arranged our guests into an arch and lit sparklers, Toby and I walked through the arch leading to our car to take us to our hotel!

Page 52: BE15 For Web
Page 53: BE15 For Web

pg 53

What was your favourite moment of the whole day?

We loved the ceremony - the vows that we said to each other were so deep and meaningful, we cherish the moment we said

‘I will’. Driving back from the church to the venue meant Toby and I had a few moments alone, we were so elated at what had just happened!I loved the speech that Toby did – it meant so much to me.

Were there any surprises on the day?Toby and I bought each other little gifts and cards for the wedding morning – we had a £30 budget but both blew it!

Where did you go on your honeymoon? We went to a honeymoon cottage in Devon with our son. We had a lovely break enjoying fish and chips on the beach and champagne in the hot tub!

Any plans for the future? For now we want to enjoy married life bringing up our little boy, but eventually would like to buy a bigger house and expand our family.

Do you have any advice for other couples?

When it comes to the actual day relax and enjoy – try to think that everything has been done that can be done, Cherish every moment you have of just the 2 of you on the wedding day!

How much should a good photographer cost?

In reality, there’s no simple answer to this. However, as a guide I always recommend spending as much as you can sensibly afford. After all, individual and personal details such as beautiful flowers, hand-made wedding favours or bespoke stationery may take months of preparation but can easily be overlooked by a photographer who has neglected to build a relationship with their client. A realistic budget would be between 10-15% of your overall budget.

Why are photographers so expensive?

The old maxim of ‘you get what you pay for’, really does apply here. A good wedding photographer will be a full-time professional and has invested not only tens

of thousands of pounds in the best quality kit, but built up experience over many years and be skilled at working in different environments and conditions. There’s only one chance to get your wedding pictures right, so it’s worth investing.

What are the tell-tale signs of a bad photographer and

how can I spot them?Avoid photographers who cherry pick the images they show you. Everyone can get the odd great photo, but to deliver consistent results in a range of conditions is what separates the part-timer from an experienced pro. Your photographer should be able to show you a variety of shots demonstrating their ability to capture the magic of your day in all scenarios.

How many times should you meet with your photographer before the

big day?I find two meetings essential. The first is an opportunity to learn about a couple, their likes, dislikes , what makes them smile and ultimately what’s important to them. This is followed by a pre wedding shoot which offers a fantastic chance for a couple to get used to what if feels like to be photographed together in an informal manner. We also have ongoing email communication and a I arrange to phone a few days before the wedding to discuss final arrangements.

Does pricing usually include the photo retouching, albums/books as

standard? This will vary from one photographer to another. At the cheaper end of the market the photographer may simply send you a copy of everything they’ve shot, both good and bad, without any corrections. At the very least you should choose a photographer who will spend some time correcting colour balance and ensuring the shots are neither too bright or dark. I will always go through my shots and retouch spots, blemishes and anything which obviously detracts from an image (fire exit signs are a good example!). Albums are usually priced separately and can range in price from a few hundred to thousands of pounds.

Would you recommend buying the copyright to my photo’s?

There’s an awful lot of confusion concerning copyright amongst both

photographers and clients. Unless you intend to use them commercially, then no. However, check with your photographer and ask what basis they supply images on. Also ask if the images they supply are watermarked (imprinted with their logo), and if they are of a high enough resolution to print from.

How will my photographer co-ordinate things on the day, will I have to enrol an usher to help them

with the photo calls?Again, this depends on your plans for the day and the style of photography you prefer. If you only have a few group shots then the photographer will usually organise these themselves. At larger weddings it makes sense to enlist the help of an usher to gather and organise guests. The key element here is communication. Ensure you tell your photographer what groups you’d like and who should be in them. It also helps to let these guests know in advance that they will be needed for a group shot. Remember, your photographer doesn’t know your guests

A friend of mine booked a photographer and on the day he sent a student out to take her snaps, how

can I stop this happening to me?Ask questions and ensure you have a written agreement which clearly states who will be taking the photos along with what happens if the photographer can’t make it due to illness/emergency.

Tips for choosing your wedding photographer

By Julia Boggio1) Make a short list of photographers

whose style you like. Then narrow it down to your top 3.

2) Email your top 3 to find out if they are available on your wedding day. If free, follow up with a phone call and book an appointment to meet in person

3) Find out exactly what the photographer is offering in his/her packages. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.

4) Ask to see albums from a few complete weddings. You want to see that he/she can deliver consistently good images over the length of the whole day.

5) Choose someone you like. This person will be with you one of the biggest days of your life and for quite a while after as you finalise the album.

It is truly amazing just how much a small island like Mauritius has for its visitors. Located just east of Madagascar, off the coast of Africa in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, the country has been ruled by both the French and the British over the course of its history, before becoming an independent nation in 1968. The Grand Bay area was the first to experience a tourist boom. Visitors fell in love with the gorgeous Pereybere beach and its array of shopping, restaurants and pubs, then started to venture farther to discover the other attractions of the island.

Culturally, a Mauritius holiday can uncover a curious mix of Hindu, Creole, French, and Chinese. Though English is the official language, you’ll find evidence of all these cultures. At the Triolet Shivala, its Hindu roots on display at the Maheswarnath, a temple that was built in 1818 to honour the important Hindu gods. In the south east, evidence from the days when the Dutch occupied the island can be spotted at Vieux Grand Port, an old Dutch fortification. The cuisine sampled during a holiday in Mauritius also demonstrates its international flare with rich curries, Indian breads, and sweet gateaux (or cakes) as the locals call them. To accompany a meal, sip locally made rum and Phoenix, the island-made beer.

Fantastic wildlife is another reason to make a Mauritius holiday your first choice. The island is well known and respected for its efforts to protect its native species. One of the world’s rarest birds, the kestrel, is found here, along with deer, tortoises, dolphins, geckos, crocodiles, monkeys and boars. In this tropical environment, you’ll discover countless ways to make your holiday a true adventure.

THREE REASONS TO LOVE MAURITIUS

• The market in Flacq is the best in the region. It is charming and chaotic at the same time with a mix of locals and tourists buying everything from souvenirs to spices.

• Take a glass bottom boat ride in Blue Bay, where the water is a brilliant blue and the beaches have the whitest sand you’ve ever seen.

• Its colonial history makes Mauritius unique with grand plantation houses, sugar mills and small-batch rum production.

If you fancy somewhere a little closer to home or are on a tighter budget you can find some breath-taking beaches without the long-haul flight. Some of the best beaches in Europe can be found in Sardinia, which is often dubbed the short haul version of the Maldives.

Located just off Italy’s central west coast, Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean and it has fantastic sandy beaches, translucent sea and isolated coves. The Costa Smeralda in the north is Sardinia’s most exclusive and expensive coastal area and an ideal place to enjoy wedded bliss. Cala Gonone, 50 miles away on the east coast, also has beautiful and undeveloped beaches, and is also a great area for walking and water sports. A perfect alternative to long-haul luxury!

REASONS TO LOVE SARDINIA• Simple yet stylish beach holidays

• Shore and coastal cruising

• Family holidays with small children

Last issue we saw our designer Grant take on the challenge of trying to lose weight, improve his lifestyle and get “photo fit” ready for his upcoming big day in september. We were also fortunate enough to receive expert help from Mr. International 2010, Ryan Terry.

GET FIT FORSUMMER

12 Week Challenge

A bit about the challengeThe challenge is designed to optimise your body transformation goals as well as helping you to change your lifestyle including breaking bad habits of a lifetime and creating a new fitter, healthier path. You will be supported by USN experts who will offer advice where they can. To find out more and to enter the challenge go to www.usn.co.uk

The JourneyThis was never going to be easy, but at the same time it felt like I really needed an opportunity to push myself. The challenge for me really made me look at the way I eat and what I eat along with the way in which I prioritise my health.Training had never really been a problem for me, I always loved my time at the gym and regularly enjoyed going out in the evenings or at weekends to play a bit of sport, it was more the diet that I have always struggled with. Taking on this challenge really made me focus on my diet and helped me to get into my head the foods to avoid and the best times to eat certain foods, essentially thats one of the biggest lessons I have learned throughout this challenge, learning the best times to eat certain foods and the best times to avoid certain foods along with the importance of a regular protein intake. Before embarking on this journey, my routines were pretty good, I was able to keep a good balance of my day to day structure and plan my gym sessions around work and visiting my (then) girlfriend, who lives in Wales. However my life changed in many ways as soon as I started on this programme. My workload increased heavily which meant that fitting in a structured and consistent training schedule became very tough. As my hours increased, the spare time available continued to decrease, however I always trained when my time allowed and did the best that I could with the available sessions. Also during this time, my girlfriend Natalie... became my fiancé! This meant that my life was then also taken up with heavy wedding planning. Sadly, throughout this time, we also lost some family members in death, which meant that we had a lot of things to sort and help out with combined with lots of travelling between Wales and Essex. So over the entire 12 week challenge, life changed in many ways which meant that I really had to work hard to stick to the plan and keep going. I was very fortunate to receive help and advice direct from USN to help me get the most out of the training time I had available along with great nutritional tips and advice. One thing I noticed, was how good I felt inside! Due to eating better, I was feeling better, sleeping better and most importantly, looking better! Early on into the challenge, my weight just fell off and I could see myself getting leaner every time I looked into the mirror. Natalie and I are getting married this month, and my preperation to get “photo-fit” has really paid off. It has really helped me to see the importance of eating well, staying active and providing my body with the correct nutrition.

The ResultsOverall, I was really happy with my results. I lost 2 inches off of my waist which put me down to a 33” waistline which I hadnt been since I was a teenager. My bodyfat dropped by 3% which was great and my overall weight dropped from 14st 9lbs to 13st 4lbs. The only down side to this was that I had to buy a lot of new clothes!! I was really chuffed with the dramatic weight loss, it just felt so great to be at my lowest ever healthy weight and have people complimenting me on how well I had done. I didn’t undertake this challenge to please others... but getting commendation from them all definately made this worthwhile!I have also learnt some very valuable lessons though. By maintaining a regular protein intake, you really dont feel the need to keep blowing out on junk food. Due to the regular intake of food, you are never hungry and you never feel as though you are missing out. Having a cheat meal once a week also gave me the strength to keep sticking to the plan for the remainder of the week.It really makes you take a look at how you eat and the benefits that come along with maintaining a healthy diet, it really isn’t about fads or starvation, but instead about providing your body with the best nutrition to be able to perform at its optimum level. You really can’t lose by making dietry improvements, your body will thank you for it!USN’s supplements really provided me with the boost I needed to take part in this. My particular favourites were the CLA1000 and Protein Dessert. The protein dessert really is the best way to get something sweet into your diet that isn’t going to be bad for you! Try the chocolate flavour, it will be something that you go back to again and again. The CLA1000 really helped me to lean out and I loved how with continued use, these helped me really FEEL like I was leaning out.

The FutureMy aim now, after having a short break since concluding this challenge, is to start fresh and get ready for my honeymoon. As our wedding plans are virtually sorted, I can make the time to train well and prepare in advance for my dietry intake, leading up to the holiday of a lifetime!
