Had a great experience sitting outside in mid 70s weather with our family. My wife enjoyed the smoked chicken with Alabama White BBQ sauce. The children enjoyed their pork BBQ with excellent macaroni and cheese. Enjoyed listening to great music playing and the great fall weather in Southern Alabama. 25603 Perdido Beach Blvd, Orange Beach, AL 36561 (251) 981-7427

    MOMENTS IN TIMEThe History Channel

    * On Nov. 5, 1775, Gen. George Washington condemns his troops' planned celebration of the British anti-Catholic holiday, Guy Fawkes Night. Guy Fawkes had been charged with placing gunpowder under the Houses of Parliament to trigger a deadly explosion that would have killed King James I.

    * On Nov. 6, 1854, "the March king," John Philip Sousa, is born. The instantly recognizable sound of Sousa's timeless pieces -- such as "Stars And Stripes Forever" (1896) -- are well-known to many Americans, even if they don't know the names of the pieces.

    * On Nov. 4, 1928, Arnold Rothstein, New York's most notorious gambler, is shot and killed during a poker game in Manhattan. When policed asked the bleeding Rothstein who had shot him, he reportedly put his finger to his lips, keeping the gangsters' code of silence.

    * On Nov. 7, 1943, singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell is born in Canada. A bout with polio as a child had left

Mitchell unable to form guitar chords with her left hand, so she experi-mented with non-standard tunings that would become part of her signature sound.

    * On Nov. 3, 1957, the Soviet Union launches the first animal into space -- a dog name Laika -- aboard the Sputnik 2 spacecraft. Laika survived for several days, kept alive by a sophisticated life-support system. She died after the batteries ran down.

    * On Nov. 2, 1960, a landmark obscenity case over "Lady Chatter-ley's Lover," by D.H. Lawrence, ends in the acquittal of Penguin Books. The publisher had been sued for obscenity in publishing an unexpur-gated version of Lawrence's 1928 novel.

    * On Nov. 8, 1994, for the first time in 40 years, the Republican Party wins control of both the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate. The empowered GOP united under the "Contract with America," a 10-point legislative plan to reduce federal taxes, balance the budget and dismantle social welfare programs.

    Fishing Frenzy in November

Fishing is often still hot along the Alabama coast through November, even as the succession of cold fronts drags the water temperatures down near or below the 70 degree mark. Most of the species of jacks have already vacated our cooling coastal waters, bound for south Florida. They are joined by the mackerels by the end of the month. Still, a bounty of resident fish (such as the drum species) remains to entice anglers to the beaches. In fact, many shorebound anglers find this period an especially enjoyable time for fishing. The crowds have thinned and the weather is often still mild. Finding where (and when) the fish that remain are feeding is the key for anglers to fill their creel as baitfish and

other prey become less common in the surfzone.

Timing is CriticalKnowing when to fish in the fall is often as critical as knowing where to fish. Tides in November are typically lowest during the morning daylight hours which shift at the end of Daylight Savings Time. It limits the locations where these drum-like fish feed during the period when the waters near the beach are shallowest. This often concentrates the fish that are available into tighter schools, allowing anglers fortunate enough to locate them to really catch a lot of them. Thus, the kingfish species (Gulf, Southern and Northern)locally called whiting or ground mullet being unregulated in Alabama are easily overfished in some popular spots. Many veteran anglers have adopted a philosophy to help voluntarily preserve this great shore fishery by limiting their catch mostly to fish over 12 inches long (those which have spawned at least once).

Veterans and newcomers alike enjoy a fishing bonanza as fish fatten up for the coming winter.

  • Beach Bits Nov. 2015- 13

During November, whiting and ground mullet commonly weigh a pound or more (about 14 inches long) but may reach nearly 20 inches long (almost three pounds), though that takes quite a while as their growth rate slows dramatically once they reach maturity (about an inch per year). They are fun to catch on most any seven-foot medium to light tackle, but are exceptional sport on ultralight panfish spinning tackle in the two- or four-pound class. As the tide slowly rises through the evening hours (especially near the full moon just after Thanksgiving) these small drums prowl along the bottom nearer to shore. They are looking for food. This usually means beach ghost shrimp, but they will eat mole crabs (sand-fleas), small clams (coquina), etc. and most any other invertebrates they happen across. That menu includes previously frozen bait shrimp, though they obviously prefer fresh dead shrimp. Whiting and ground mullet are often found in mixed schools and at times accompanied by other drum species (red or black), croakers, spots or even speckled trout, and occasionally pompano or flounder. These can all be caught on dead shrimp using the commercially sold Hi-Lo rigs (Dropper Rigs) especially in rough water. But locals seem to prefer fishing a Carolina style presentation on bottom with a small egg sinker (in calm water). The hook of choice is a bronze #4 or #2 Eagle Claw Kahle, locally called suicide hook, due to their reputa-tion as proven fish catchers.

Location, Location, LocationMost fish species relate to structure to some extent and along the sandy beach the only natural structure is in the form of a sandbar or drop-off. But that is enough to act as a feeding station for these fall fish that are looking

for a few more meals to fatten up prior to the coming winter.Problem is, the sandy beach (with sandbars and troughs) is constantly in motion due to scouring wave action from intermit-tent storms and fronts. After every surf event (about once a week), the exact position and size of these spots favorable to the fish move a bit, usually westward due to littoral drift. This makes relocating the fishing hotspots critical, especially after the water has calmed down after several days of hard northerly winds. So, scouting the beach for potential fishing spots (close to public access points) is time well spent for the serious surf angler.

The Piers Have ItFishing from the Gulf State Park Pier is at a fall peak in Novem-ber as it offers the only hard structure for miles along the shoreline plus easy access out over the waves into deeper waters that still harbor and attract fish. Spanish and king mackerel are often available to be caught through much of the month, though local baitfishes grow scarcer. Frozen cigar minnows are a traditional bait to use for kings in November right up until Thanksgiving. Spanish mackerel can still be caught on the usual variety of spoons, plugs and jigs (like Krocodile, Gotcha and Looney). Mackerel belly strips often substitute as bait when the small LYs grow scarcer. Bull redfish (those over the 26-inch length limit) become the primary quarry for anglers fishing live and dead baits from the end of the pier. Alabama does allow for retention of one oversized redfish per angler per day, though it should be kept in mind these fish are the breeding stock which takes many years to attain this size and contribute to the gene pool for many years thereafter. They are hard fighting yet hardy fish, making them excellent candidates for catch, photo and release, even though they are less than great table fare. Many years, sheepshead gather around the pier in November to graze on the algae and barnacles growing on the pilings as well as the abundant ghost shrimp living in nearby sandbar drop-offs. They are readily caught using live shrimp suspended between the pilings on medium tackle and support a fishery that extends throughout the balance of the fall season and into winter. Bycatch with this method includes redfish, black drum, pompa-no and bluefish as well. Large Atlantic croaker often school near the pier (or under the end platform) to spawn and seek shelter from predators. These croakers often exceed 15 inches long and occasionally weigh in over two pounds. They are a lot of fun on medium class spinning tackle and great tasting as well. Between the beach and longshore sandbar, the fishery on the pier is mostly targeting whiting with dead shrimp on the bottom. Bycatch is commonplace and includes black drum, red drum, pompano and flounder. So, dont let a little chilly or wet weather stop you from getting in on this fall fishing bonanza in November, as you can still enjoy some great days outdoors!
