Huronia West OPP say a car found in the Nottawasaga River on Tuesday was taken earlier in the day from a Mosley Street residence. The black Chrysler was found in the river near an area popular with anglers, just off Knox Road East. The car was pulled out of the water late Wednesday; that's when it was determined it was the same vehicle stolen late Monday or early Tuesday.

Music Angel Gets High Praise

After having a chance to try the Music Angel I can truly say I’m impressed. The sound is great and the convenience of a small portable speaker system with an internal rechargeable battery can’t be beat. It’s so versatile I’ve enjoyed using it while in my office, relaxing on the deck and surfing the internet. It

has turned my Ipad from a device that cuts you off from the people around you to a music source to be enjoyed by the entire group. The FM Radio reception is excellent and I'm putting on all my favourite music on a Mini SD CARD to be played on Music Angel. Thanks, Joe., Wasaga Beach

We all appreciate our wonderful stretch of sand that makes us World Famous. Wasaga Beach has been affectionately known as “The Beach” for generations as a result of our 14 kms of natural wonder, The World’s Longest Freshwater Beach!Although there are many features that make Wasaga Beach special and unique, another natural asset is certainly the Nottawasaga River that meanders through our community. Like the beach, the Nottawasaga River has a long history and has played an important part in the development of Wasaga Beach.Over the years, the river has served many purposes for many people and businesses. It was always used as a transportation route for the natives of our area and then continued to be used as an important part of the main travel route from York (now Toronto) to Penetanguishene and beyond. During the 3 year War of 1812, the Wasaga Beach portion of this route was so important, Schoonertown, a small military outpost was built here. Our Nottawasaga River also saw the battle and the sinking of the HMS Nancy during this conflict. The actions that followed the battle in Wasaga Beach most likely resulted in Canada remaining Canada when the treaty was signed at the end of the war! When logging was a thriving industry around Southern Georgian Bay, the river was instrumental in moving the fallen trees in huge log booms out into the bay and on to other ports. Commercial winter ice recovery was important and kept perishables cool throughout the summer months and when the ice went out every spring, commercial and sport fishing flourished. The tranquil beauty of the winding river did not escape the eyes of the millions of visitors discovering Wasaga Beach! Unique in the world, our river boasts beautiful sandy dunes sloping towards the river while other areas provide perfect shorelines for boating and fishing.Cottagers found the Nottawasaga River running through our town provided even more miles and miles of “waterfront” and allowed for docking and boating from their own properties. This summer there are some new... and perhaps not so new ways to enjoy our beautiful river in Wasaga Beach! Our friends Shawn and Andrea of Fishing on my Time have some exciting plans, allowing all the opportunity to better see and enjoy what the river has to offer. Thanks to Fishing on my Time, this summer will see the return of rental boats of all types, River Tours with unique entertainment, Water Taxis and more!Yes, we will always be “The Beach”, but let’s remember how lucky we are to have the Nottawasaga River as an important part of our town, allowing a totally different form of outdoor enjoyment and recreation! Keep checking beach BOOSTER and the Fishing on my Time web site for updates on all the good things coming to the shores of our Nottawasaga River!

Its spring time and you’ve decided that you want to start an exercise routine. Congratulations you have taken the first step to improving your health. Regular exercise helps to:* lose weight* increase energy levels* decrease aches and pains* improve sleep* improve your ability to cope with stress* decrease the risk of developing certain diseases

Sounds too good to be true? It’s not; exercise really is the “magic pill”. According to Canada’s Physical Activity Guide, exercise has been shown to reduce the risk of over 25 chronic conditions, including coronary heart disease, stroke, hypertension, breast cancer, colon cancer, Type 2 diabetes, depression and osteoporosis. Research shows that as much as half the functional decline between the ages of 30 and 70 is due not to aging itself but to an inactive way of life. Of course there’s a catch, you need to get moving and stay moving to reap all of the great benefits that exercise has to offer. This doesn’t necessarily mean following a strict routine at the gym, although that can be very beneficial. The reality is to move more and sit less. If you ask anyone what the most difficult thing is about exercising, they will say it is lacing up their shoes and getting out the door. There are going to be days that you don’t feel like exercising. Keep in mind that habits typically take about 3-6 months to become routine; if you stick with it, it will become easier and much more natural. Here are some tips to get you started and help you stay motivated along the way. * Start easy and build gradually. When approaching any new kind of exercise program it is always best to start conservatively. Quite often we start too ambitious and give up when our muscles and joints become sore or injured. If you are not accustomed to exercising start with 5-10 minutes and build up so that you are exercising 30-60 minutes most days of the week. * Incorporate a warm up. Start each session with a gentle warm up to get the blood pumping. This could include a few minutes of slow walking and some gentle stretches.* Write it down. A written plan will help you stay motivated and stay on track. Start a physical activity journal where you keep track each day of any activity that you do. This will help to positively reinforce all of the positive changes you are making.* Make it fun. It is going to be difficult to keep yourself motivated if you have to force yourself to go. Choose an activity that you enjoy. * Choose a variety of activities. These activities can range from walking, yoga, biking, Tai Chi and the list goes on and on. This will ensure that you don’t get bored and you will also be working different muscle groups which will help with injury prevention. If you like walking try choosing a different location, there are so many beautiful spots in the beach to explore.* Choose the appropriate footwear for your activity. This will make exercise a lot safer and more enjoyable.* Be creative; make exercise part of your daily routine. Look for ways in your regular routine whereby you can add exercise to what you already do. Walk the dog a few minutes farther, bike to the store or to work, do stretching or strengthening exercises while you watch TV, take the stairs instead of the elevator, or park the car at the far end of the grocery parking lot. * Make exercise dates with a partner. Exercising with a partner or a group is an excellent motivator. Meet friends for a walk instead of going for coffee or dinner. A group or a friend can also provide accountability because people are expecting you to show up.* Sign up for walks/ example Breast Cancer walk. Sign up ahead of time and write it on your calendar this will keep you motivated.* Missed workouts. If you miss a session don’t waste energy feeling guilty about it. It’s going to happen once in awhile- pick up where you left off. There are physiological changes that occur in the body, and these changes are not going to go away over night* Finding the time. Before you say that you don’t have time to exercise, realize that it doesn’t have to be all at once. Try splitting up your workouts, for example, 15 minutes of walking in the morning, and 15 minutes in the evening, or a 20 minute brisk walk on your lunch break. We always find the time to do the things we think are really important. Improving your health and well-being is very important and should be made a priority in your day. * Don’t overdo it. Sometimes your body needs a rest day. If you are sick or injured listen to your body and take some time off. Life is at the Beach by Ellen Riches Another great Breakfast at the Beach in April with a surprise change of speaker; Laurel Finney informed and educated us on the War of 1812 and the amazing history that happened right here on our Beach.Thinking about the 'Nancy' and the Bi-centennial of the War of 1812 and how fortunate we are; a few quick thinking men were able to overcome two American warships ,which mean that we are Canadians and not Americans. It's a funny thing that we don't really think about what could have happened; we just enjoy the fact that we have what we have right now. I think that this is one of the key issues that we face as Canadians and more importantly as Wasaga Beachers – we don't really appreciate what we have because the existence of our Beach and our parkland is just there. It's where we live and taking it for granted is what we do.

Walking the Beach is a regular occurrence for me and one that I never fail to enjoy and appreciate. This time of year the wind is particularly strong and the white caps on the Bay are beautiful. It is also a very good friend to the Kite Boarders who enjoy the free rein of the Beaches before the summer begins and their activity is restricted. Watching the Kite Boarders from Allenwood Beach is a fantastic spectator sport. My friend Faye Ego and I were musing on this the other day as we watched the boards skim across the water at incredible speeds that display a huge amount of skill and daring on the part of the Kite Boarders. What a treat to the eyes and the best part of this sport is it's free to watch. The wind is up again today; time for another great walk.

Wasaga Under Siege

As Lt. Miller Worsley of the British Royal Navy looked out onto Georgian Bay from his position at the mouth of the Nottawasaga River. He could see the sails of three warships approaching and they were not flying the British Union Jack, but the Stars and Stripes of the infant republic to the south. It was August 13th, 1814 and Great Britain had been at war with the United States for two years. Worsley's main concern was the schooner Nancy which sat anchored in the river behind him, her masts concealed by the trees. She was his to command along with 21 seamen of the Royal Navy, 23 Indians and 9 French Canadian Voyageurs. This was Nottawasaga Landing an important British supply post. It was guarded only by one crudely built blockhouse on the inland side of the river and was the only means of defence which stood between the Americans and the Nancy, if she was to be discovered. The American ships Niagara, Tigress and Scorpion, under the command of Captain A. Sinclair had sailed to the mouth of the Nottawasaga River and dropped anchor. They believed the Nancy whom they were seeking, was still on route from Fort Michilimackinac. Perhaps the Nancy and her crew would escape the Americans after all.

Who says you’re not allowed to sleep on the job?? Well, my boss here over at StickerKing is Named Calapyso after the famous scuba diver Jacque Costeau’s Boat. She likes to be called Rippy, and enjoys talking long walks on the Beach, chasing cats and TREATS, of course. You can usually find her laying in the sun, hanging out the window of a car or just winning your heart over with her "puppy dog eyes" !! This Old Jack Russell Terrier has put her hyper days behind her and has chosen to be lazy and cuddly! One of my favorite sayings is......."I LOVE MY DOG!" I tell her that everyday!

A 50- something year old white woman arrived at her seat on a crowded flight and immediately didn't want the seat. The seat was next to a black man. Disgusted, the woman immediately summoned the flight attendant and demanded a new seat. The woman said "I cannot sit here next to this black man." The fight attendant said "Let me see if I can find another seat." After checking, the flight attendant returned and stated "Ma'am, there are no more seats in economy, but I will check with the captain and see if there is something in first class." About 10 minutes went by and the flight attendant returned and stated "The captain has confirmed that there are no more seats in economy, but there is one in first class. It is our company policy to never move a person from economy to first class, but being that it would be some sort of scandal to force a person to sit next to an UNPLEASANT person, the captain agreed to make the switch to first class." Before the woman could say anything, the attendant gestured to the black man and said, "Therefore sir, if you would so kindly retrieve your personal items, we would like to move you to the comfort of first class as the captain doesn't want you to sit next to an unpleasant person." Passengers in the seats nearby began to applause

What if?Wasaga Beach is known for its fun in the sun natural beauty, for its bustling days in the fifties and sixties where

people came to relax and enjoy the amenities and the friendly people. So what happened? What did we lose over the years? During the town visioning session for Beaches One and Two this past year, we were presented with a series of pictures from the fifties to the sixties to the seventies where we were shown a gradual erosion of our gathering areas and our great buildings and views of the many vehicles and hustle and bustle to parking lots, open spaces and a scattered array of disparate buildings trying to hang on to the beach dream. Essentially we let our gathering point escape us. Throughout history, a gathering point was known for more than the community's crucial economic link to wider markets. It was a community forum, an information center, a place to entertain it was even an arena of debate and competition. It was a place for people. So how do we recreate this gathering point? How do we capture the energy of this community? One of the ways is to support the approach taken by our leaders and essentially entice outsiders to come in and convince these outsiders that investing in our town is a good thing. Another way is to take the future into our own hands and drive the transformation. A vision shared and owned by the people is essentially a virtual gathering place. What if we created a gathering of Wasaga Beach service groups that would be committed to a megaproject in a sense and we unleashed all of the talent and energy from all of our service groups to take on this project as a joint effort. This could send a signal that this town is alive and well. What if we created a community driven project to extend the beach boardwalk across all beaches to support the overall town vision to create this new gathering point? I don't think we realize what talent and capability we do have in this town just waiting to be unleashed. The Probus groups for instance could launch a “Greys for Gathering” group that could activate talent, time and energy towards this cause. We could create a boardwalk venue that all residents and visitors would enjoy. Boardwalks for beach towns are status symbols not alone great venues for exercise and congregating socially. This kind of project could energize our community to new heights. What do you think Wasagians? Are you up for it? Beach Boosters is certainly here to help it on its way. Send me your thoughts. Please email me at [email protected]

The Ship-A-Hoy PavilionRecently, a listener sent the Explorer her memories of the dance halls of Tiny Township. One of them was the well-known Ship-A-Hoy Pavilion of Woodland Beach. Built in 1932 by a Mr. Whelan, it was originally called the Sunset Pavilion.According to dance hall historian Peter Young, the Sunset Pavilion's opening dance of the season was held in May on the long weekend. Music was provided by the Johnstone family band from Midland with a dance held every Wednesday throughout the summer. In the 1940s, there was a square dance on the weekends and a weekly song and dance evening with Mrs. Rutherford playing the piano. Proceeds from admissions were sent to the Toronto Telegram's war fund.In the 1950s, the dance hall was sold to Jack Tocher and renamed the Ship-A-Hoy. On

Saturday nights there was bingo at seven p.m. Teenagers then helped clean up the hall so a dance could

be held until midnight. Come the long weekends of summer there was a midnight dance on Sundays that went on until three in the morning. Music was supplied by a disc jockey named Nick who later married his boss's daughter. In the late 1960s, at a time when dance halls around Ontario were falling on hard times, the Ship-A-Hoy was sold once again, this time to the Ellisons. They in turn sold it again and today, the old hall is the Bayshore Seniors Club, a fully renovated building where the old wooden chairs have been replaced and the jukebox has long vanished.

WRONG, THERE ARE 6 -- no joke...READ IT AGAIN ! Really, go Back and Try to find the 6 F's.The reasoning behind is the brain cannot process "OF".Incredible or what? Go back and look again!!Anyone who counts all 6 "F's" on the first go is a genius. Three is normal, four is quite rare.Send this copy of Beach BOOSTER to your friends. It will drive them crazy.!And keep them occupiedFor several minutes.

Golf QuestionSometimes when I have a long shot into the green I feel under tremendous pressure and I freeze over the shot causing a horrible result. What advice can you give me to fix this issue?

AnswerThe first thing I will say is that pressure is not a bad thing. Feeling under tremendous pressure is not good, but feeling under pressure to perform should be welcomed, not something you should run away from. Because if you're too comfortable and relaxed when playing golf you'll do some dumb shots just because you don't really care.So you need a balance between pressure and relaxation. The trick is in finding the level of pressure that helps your game, rather than hinders it. There are generally two types of pressure. One is when you are playing so well that you get outside your comfort zone, and the other is where you are playing worse than you expect so you feel pressure.Let's tackle the first situation first. If you are playing so well that you feel under pressure, you should first be thankful and grateful for the situation you're in, it definitely beats the opposite. Next you've got to learn from the experience, and the more you get under that type of pressure the better you'll be next time. After each pressure situation has passed, review what happened and learn and grow from the experience. Now the second type of pressure is very hard for some people to handle, as they often seem to be in a rut of bad shots, bad performances etc. So how do you stop the "rut" when you're in it? Well here's a few things you should do...1. You should have a type of shot you know you can hit 9 times out of 10. Whether that's a fade or a draw, it doesn't matter. But you must know what shape of shot you're going to hit. An example of this is Paul Azinger. When he was under pressure he'd hit everything with a punch type of action.2. Never play a shot you haven't practiced.3. Have a pre-shot routine and stick to it, no matter what has happened in the past or what may happen in the future.4. After a bad shot, forget about it. I know that's easier said than done, so use some focusing techniques to distract your mind. For example, take some slow breathes and count your breathes both in and out. Ask some different questions that get your focus off the bad shot you've just hit. Talk to your playing partners about some event totally unrelated to golf (a controversial topic is best).5. Choose clubs that will get you to the hole with something less than a perfect strike. So often golfers put themselves under needless pressure because they have to hit a perfect shot - by their own doing.6. Play at a constant pace, whether you're playing badly or not.Use these strategies when you play and you'll feel less and less "bad" pressure. Remember, pressure is good when it helps you to focus and concentrate, but it's not good when it either gets you too far down or up. So practice what I've suggested and you will improve. Wasaga Beach is a place that has been creating memories for all who visit for generations. I would suggest that many folks, who have moved to Wasaga Beach to call it home, came back to the beach as a result of memories of years gone by and the good times remembered here!At the Beach BOOSTER Promotions event, The Way Wasaga Was; Main Street Re-Visited last November, it truly was an experience to see the faces of yesteryears returning and greeting other Wasaga Beach friends from days gone by! The stories were told, people laughed out loud and embraced … and a few tears were shed.Yes, Wasaga Beach has a wonderful history and I hope to help maintain the memories of how the original village came to be and then grew into the town we know today. Knowing where we have been and how we got to where we are can certainly help guide us as we move into the future!A great account of how Wasaga Beach developed is the book Wasaga Saga; A History of Wasaga Beach. This book contains many facts and personal accounts with views of how The Beach developed to become a vibrant tourist town and sheds light on how we became the town we know today. At the most recent Wasaga Beach Recognition Awards held in February, the Wasaga Beach Heritage Advisory Committee recognized Thelma Morrison, the author of Wasaga Saga: The History of Wasaga Beach. The committee wanted to award Thelma with recognition and thanks for writing this interesting and heartfelt story of The Beach, as well as her many other achievments and contributions.Unfortunately, Thelma could not be present at the Recognition Event, but told the Heritage Advisory Committee that she was honoured and appreciated the award and recognition. Chair of the Heritage Advisory Committee, Connie Gray presented and accepted the award for Thelma and later delivered it to her personally. Wasaga Saga: The History of Wasaga Beach is a worthwhile read to anyone who has visited or spent time in The Beach and can be purchased through the Wasaga Beach Archives. See ad on this page for more information.

Wasaga Beach has always been a unique town with diverse opportunities, All I can say that the Real Estate Market here is the same thing. While other parts of our province and country are running at one speed, Wasaga Beach marches to its own drummer.

For the Real Estate Bench Mark, we want to keep you informed on what's happening with Real Estate in our town and around the area. We plan on bringing that unique experience here to you so that when you are looking for a reference point, you can come to us to get updated. With the number of sales up from last year by approximately 20% for Wasaga Beach and with mortgage rates remaining at all time lows we are off to a good start for this year, which may be assisted in the 1st quarter by the unbelievable open and mild winter. As I keep updated on the market from the GTA it would be fair to think that we are on track to see this trend to continue. Multiple offers on good properties in the city are still the order of the day. In fact some sellers are pricing homes with the intention of creating an excitement that will ensure a very quick sell for top dollar. Does this kind of marketing give concern? Who determines what listing price will give that inflated offer? Why don't we see those kinds of multiple offer situations here? Here is the March 2012 Market Snapshot for our area, if you are interested in the complete stats just let us know.We have available to you professionals involved in the Real Estate Market to help answer your questions. Questions on mortgages, home inspections, legal issues and home staging will be responded to. As well as anything that you can't get answered on HGTV – great entertainment but not always relevant to the real world!!Contact us at glenn@TeamRealtyExecutives or go to www.TeamRealtyExecutives.com
