Get outside this winter on Gulf State Park Trails BY ALLISON MARLOW

First we skipped around a simple garden snake that had found a warm spot of sun to enjoy on the boardwalk. Then, a butterfly flitted across the path and my daughter swears it tickled her on the nose, on purpose. Finally, we held a short but dignified ceremony for a deceased frog we discovered lying on the edge of the path.

In just 15 minutes we experienced the circle of life and the wonders of nature on a hike that was easy enough for all five of my children, ages 7 – 16 to handle.

If you are looking for a family outing or a trail challenge for yourself this winter, head to Gulf State Park.

The trails here, all 28 miles worth, are paved and maintained for all fitness levels. The park includes easy access to seven trails of the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail complex as well. Want to tackle an easy 1 mile amble with your toddler, hit the Twin Bridges trail. Looking for a longer challenge for yourself ? The Gulf Oak Ridge Trail clocks in at 2.75 miles. For day-long adventures other trails stretch for more than 10 miles.

As the winter months approach and the hot air and burning sun disappear, November through March are perfect months to explore this gem in our own backyard. As a bonus, many of the biting bugs have disappeared as well. An even bigger bonus? Butterflies and birds are heading south for the winter and use

Alabama’s coast as a stopping point before heading across wide swaths of water to South America. This means your trail walk may be filled with glimpses of colorful birds and butterflies too.

If your goal is get outside on the weekends, every outing can be made to Gulf State Park because every hike is different. The park’s 6,150 acres stretch across nine distinct ecosystems: evergreen forests, pine savannas, maritime forests, dune ridges / sand scrub habitats, fresh and salt marshes, freshwater and brackish lakes, coastal swales, dunes and the beach and gulf.

There is a hike to take visitors through each of these different areas, meaning you can experience different fauna, trees and animals on each visit.

For those of us who meander

more than we hike, the park offers plenty of stopping points for rest and food including the newly opened Woodside Restaurant, Nature Center and Butterfly Garden.

Cap a day’s visit by heading to

Baldwin County’s gem, the sugar white sand beaches of the Gulf Coast. End the day with a meal at The Lodge or relax in a rocking chair on The Lodge’s spacious back porch and watch the sun sink below the waves.

A D V E R T I S E M E N T

It was a beau ful summer morning when we le Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma. My hair is very important to me and ge ng a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot.

We have both been very dissa sfi ed with the last few a empts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into considera on our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother.

The traffi c was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on me to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beau ful.

Pam, my friend, went fi rst since I was a li le chicken a er the last experiences. Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He fi rst looked at her face shape and explained that there are fi ve face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, a er that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condi on her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right.

So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep condi oning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of mo on, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was fi nished! She was so happy and she could not believe the diff erence in her hair.

Now it was my turn, my hair especially in the summer gets

very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made diff erent to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the condi oners are based on petroleum oil. Where professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condi on our hair the same.

Anthony explained that at all mes our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out. Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily. A er we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and condi oning my hair had ever had.

While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no over-the-counter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. A er shampooing and before condi oning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, pu ng any condi oner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it fi rst then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself. Then before you leave the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more.

A er she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood. They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says

it works! Anthony has his own line of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair

called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought a bo le. Best money we ever spent and yes, we are defi nitely going back. He is a true professional.

Well worth a visit!Anthony’s salon is at 23175 Perdido Beach Boulevard in Orange Beach & their phone

number is 251.974.1514. Please say we sent you!

Herman Callaway was charter fishing as early as 1913. There was seldom a time when he did not have a boat under construction in the yard of his home on Highway 180 across from Nancy Lane. Being inventive, innovative, and also a boat builder were a few of the many things he learned from his Father, Captain James C. Callaway, early founder of Orange Beach.

One boat that I really remember having grown up here was the ‘Dixie Maid.’ Mr. Herman designed and built the Dixie Maid by hand. Construction of the nearly 40 foot boat began with collection of cypress logs that had washed up and were buried on the beach. During the days of the Great Depression and through the 1930’s and early 40’s, money was difficult to come by, and one learned to become very self-reliant.

When a storm would uncover suitable logs for construction, Herman and his sons would take one of his boats around to the beach. Landing the boys on the beach, they would dig sand from around a log, swim out to the boat, drag a line back to the beach, and tie it to the log. On the boat Mr. Herman would drag it from the beach. His sons would ride the log as their Dad towed it back around to the Orange Beach Hotel on Wolf Bay. It was then towed

up the road to the house. One log found for use was 65 feet long. Timber not found on the beach was cut on property at Herman’s house.

Actual construction of Dixie Maid began in 1937. After the keel and the keelson were laid, Herman went in search of just the right natural shaped oak tree branch crooks to use for construction of the ribs. Finding them on his property, he cut and hand-shaped them to their job.

These were hard times even here in Orange Beach. There was not much money to buy things. It was a time to innovate with what you had on hand, and that is exactly what Mr. Herman and his sons did.

To fit out the Dixie Maid, Mr. Herman made by hand, all brass fittings that he had salvaged from shipwrecks. He developed a dual steering system to enable use of the wheel on deck without having to disconnect one to use the other, an innovation at the time. To provide outriggers for trolling, he purchased a radio antenna wire reel device from a deactivated military bomber and converted it into his outriggers.

The Dixie Maid was launched into the water of Bay La Launch at Dan Callaway’s place, one year after construction was begun.

Local historian Margaret Childress Long moved to Orange Beach from Evergreen when she was just two months shy of her second birthday. Although she did spend 12 years in Creola she has always called Orange Beach home. Margaret and her husband Buddy live in the same house where Margaret’s parents lived for more than 50 years. Her dad paid $12,500 to Dr. Amos Garret of Robertsdale, her mom’s first cousin, in 1949 for the 300 ft. waterfront parcel. A teacher at Fairhope Middle and High Schools and Elberta Middle School, Margaret served the island as school board representative for six years. A fisherman, hunter and farmer, her father also owned a farm in Summerdale. Sons Wesley and Brooks have turned the farm into the popular Alligator Alley tourist attraction.

Margaret has co-authored two books, “The Best Place to Be – The Story of Orange Beach, Alabama” and “Orange Beach Alabama – A Pictorial History”

As an artist, Poppy is deliberate. She steps carefully into trays of salmon and mustard colored paint before patting her paws against the soft white fabric. She stops often to snack on grapes and fat, rolly super worms.

But Belle. Oh Belle. The free-spirited painter rolls and rambles across her canvas leaving splatters of yellow, purple and pink on her artwork, the table and passersby. At one point, in her excitement she tumbles over the edge of the table and scrambles across the grass below.

Poppy, a possum, and Belle, a clouded leopard, are helping to craft their own future by creating custom t-shirts with their paw prints. The shirts will be sold at the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo’s Animal Art Safari on Nov. 2.

Dozens of animals at the zoo will take their turn dipping their paws, claws and toes into colorful paints and then walking across white t-shirts emblazoned with the animal art safari logo.

The shirts are a collector’s item since only 30 will be made and sold this year. Even rarer are the exquisite pieces of art that other animals have created over the past few months. Canvases, some as large as a wall, will be on display and up for auction at the fundraiser.

In crafting those pieces the trainers worked with the

animals and used training techniques to help steer their use of the paint on the canvas.

The Art Safari will be held on the grounds of the new Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo, located just miles up the road from its current location. In addition to the animal’s creations, the silence auction will also feature artwork by local and world renowned artists. The $75 ticket includes dinner, a full bar and entertainment by Platinum Duo.

Fluttering to the coast

Butterflies delight coastal residents as they head south for the winter

BY ALLISON MARLOW

Visitors are arriving in droves from points north this month, flittering and fluttering into backyards and flower gardens.

Autumn and early winter marks the fall migration for butterflies, most notably the celebrated Monarch, as the insects make their way south to Mexico and beyond.

Humans can enjoy the shower of color flickering and swooping through the air by simply taking a walk through one of the visitors’ favorite local spots, Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge.

Monarchs generally hatch four generations in a single year. The first three generations live just four weeks and each travel a portion of the northern migration in the spring and

summer. By fall, the fourth generation, dubbed the monarch “super generation” is larger than its parents and grandparents and lives six months. It spends the bulk of that time flying as far as 3,000 miles between the northern and southern hemispheres.

Brittany Petersen, assistant refuge manager for the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge, said many of the butterflies we see are using Alabama as a safe haven to travel through and avoid crossing large swaths of water to reach Mexico.

There is also speculation, she said, that some monarchs are wintering over in Florida and even in Alabama.

“It’s amazing we’ve come this far and still there is a lot

Want to attract monarchs to your yard? One of best way to invite monarchs to your home is to plant native plants that will provide nectar. Also, grow native milkweeds which you can usually find at a native plant nursery.

Common BuckeyeWingspan: 1 5/8 - 2 3/4 inches Markings: Upperside is brown. Forewing has two orange cell bars and two eyespots. Hindwing has two eyespots; the upper one is larger and contains a magenta crescent. The underside of the hindwing is brown or tan in the wet season (summer) and rose-red in the dry season (fall). Females tend to be larger.

Monarch Walks at Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge Join refuge volunteer, Homer Single-ton, as he leads participants along the Gator Lake Trail searching for this beautiful butterfly. During the walk Homer will introduce you to the butterflies which pass through this area, their habitats and their life cycles. Participants will also be asked to help catch monarch butterflies so that they can receive tags that will allow scientists to track their migration! The walk typically lasts anywhere from 2.5 - 3 hours and participants should come prepared to walk over 2 miles in soft sand with minimal shade. Water and bug spray are highly suggested. There will be 10 monarch walks, held on Wednesdays and Saturdays through November 16. They will begin at 10 a.m. at the Gator Lake Trailhead located off of Mobile Street. The walks are limited to 12 participants; please call to make reservations at 251-540-7720.

to be learned and discovered,” she said. “It kind of gives you a whole new mystery to wildlife.”

The Gulf Coast is a favorite for the traveling insects because our tropic-like weather means the region has two flowering seasons, spring and fall, giving the butterflies a bevy of flowerbeds to feed from.

At the wildlife refuge, volunteers lead Monarch walks every Wednesday and Saturday through November to teach visitors about their colorful visitors. Refuge staff catch and tag butterflies with tiny, numbered stickers. Volunteers in Mexico and South America catch the butterflies once they arrive and record the number before releasing them back into

the wild. The tagging helps scientists

determine exactly where the butterflies are heading. While the migration usually tapers off in December, warmer winters mean monarchs have been spotted in Alabama into January.

Peterson said it is best to enjoy monarchs from a distance.

“They’re big butterflies. Be impressed that this insect is doing this amazing journey that is close to 4,000 miles,” she said.

In addition to monarchs, Alabama flower beds are filled with a large variety of butterflies the delight visitors.

“It’s really a great time for butterfly watching no matter what,” Peterson said.

Ingredients 1 (4- to 5-lb.) whole chicken14 to 16 cups water6 bay leaves1 pound andouille sausage, sliced into 1/8-in.-thick rounds3/4 cup vegetable oil or bacon drippings1 cup (4 1/4 oz.) all-purpose flour2 medium-size yellow onions, roughly chopped2 green bell peppers, roughly chopped1 medium bunch celery including leaves, roughly chopped1 tablespoon dried thyme1 tablespoon Creole seasoning1 tablespoon table salt2 teaspoons black pepper1 teaspoon dried oregano1/2 teaspoon dried sage2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce2 cups finely chopped scallions1/2 cup finely chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley1 qt. fresh oysters, drained2 pounds raw medium shrimp, peeled and deveined2 to 3 Tbsp. LuLu’s Perfect Pepper Hot SauceCooked white riceFilé powderFrench bread

Directions:1. Place chicken in a large Dutch oven. Cover with 14

to 16 cups water; add 2 bay leaves, and bring to a boil over medium-high. Reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer until chicken is tender, 1 to 1 1/2 hours. Transfer chicken to a bowl. Pour stock through a fine wire-mesh strainer, and discard solids. Cool stock 30 minutes, and skim fat. Reserve 8 cups of skimmed stock. Remove and discard chicken skin and bones. Chop chicken into large bite-size pieces.

2. Cook sausage in a Dutch oven over medium until browned, about 8 minutes; drain on paper towels. Add vegetable oil to Dutch oven, and heat over medium-high. Gradually add flour, whisking constantly. Cook, whisking constantly and reducing heat as necessary

to keep roux from burning, until a dark mahogany color, 25 to 35 minutes.

3. Add onions, bell peppers, and celery to roux, and cook, stirring constantly with a large wooden spoon, until vegetables begin to soften, 8 to 10 minutes. Stir in chicken and sausage. Gradually add 8 cups reserved chicken stock, and stir well. Add thyme, Creole seasoning, salt, pepper, oregano, sage, Worcestershire sauce, and remaining 4 bay leaves; stir well. Bring to a boil, and boil 5 minutes. Reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer, uncovered, 1 to 3 hours. (If gumbo gets too thick, add a little more reserved chicken broth or water. If it is too thin, continue to simmer uncovered. Because there is pork sausage in this gumbo, skim off any excess fat that rises to the top.)

4. About 30 minutes before serving, add scallions and parsley. Cover and cook 15 minutes. Add oysters and shrimp; cook, uncovered, until oysters begin to curl, about 2 minutes.

5. Stir in desired amount of hot sauce. Remove gumbo from heat; let stand 10 minutes. (It will stay hot for a long time.) Add salt and pepper to taste. Serve over cooked white rice with filé powder and French bread.
