CHRIST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH SEPTEMBER 2017 PAGE 1 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, This morning I had my annual review with Rev. Joseph Archie, our District Superintendent. Rev. Archie has always been very supportive, and he continues to care deeply about the families of Christ United Methodist Church and Cedars United Methodist Church. One of the topics of our discussion was the paying of our conference and district apportionments. Rev. Archie is grateful that both Christ and Cedars continue to pay our apportionments in full each year. Among the many ministries supported by our apportionment giving is the United Methodist Committee on Relief. As our televisions and computers flash images of the flooding in the Houston, TX area, UMCOR is currently working with disaster coordinators and early response teams to provide relief to the many victims of hurricane/tropical storm Harvey. A description of these efforts can be found on the UMCOR website (http://www.umcor.org/). I share this with you, because some of my colleagues have mentioned that in their churches, they are sometimes questioned about why we pay apportionments. UMCOR is just one of the many organizations supported by our giving. And, at times like these, the dollars provided by the 87 churches in the Wilmington District alone help to provide relief to those who need it most. Rev. Archie used the often-heard quote, “We are stronger together than any of us is alone.” He also mentioned that this drives home the meaning of the UNITED Methodist Church. That said, I also want to express my personal gratitude for the way our church has united on a smaller scale to help Honor get a new start. As of Labor Day, she will be in Vermont, where her biological father will be helping her get back to a life that is much different than sleeping in a van in our parking lot. I thank you for your kindness, your generosity and your willingness to show the love of Christ to this young woman who so desperately needed to see what non- judgmental love looks like. I could not be more grateful to be part of this family. And I expressed my gratitude to Rev. Archie for allowing me to remain in this appointment for another year. As summer ends, and cooler weather moves in, may the love of Christ continue to keep your hearts, “strangely warmed,” as John Wesley so described his experience of the Holy Spirit. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This morning I had my annual review with Rev.

I thank you for your kindness, your generosity and your willingness to show the love of Christ to this young woman who so desperately needed to see what non-judgmental love looks like.

Your sister in Christ,

Sharon

In July, we were blessed to have Marshallton UMC’s Praise Team sing and play for us! They have beautiful voices and the songs were truly inspiring! Thank you so much for sharing your talents with us.

On August 20th, Anthony joined us and played special music for us. We thank him for sharing his talent with us !

On July 16, Jeffrey Peters shared his amazing talent with us. He played a ‘mean’ piano and later sang “I know who holds Tomorrow” for the special music selection.

The Allstar Infinity Cheer & Tumbling showed off their talents in a demonstration of their newly learned cheer skills. They had an energetic routine! We appreciated being invited to watch their presentation along with their parents! Thank you tumblers!

On August 27th Bill & Christine Belcher provided us with very special music. Christine sang her original song while Bill accompanied her on guitar. During the offering, Bill and Gary played duet on their guitars. It was inspirational!

On September 13th, “Shepherd’s Grass”, a bluegrass gospel group, performed amazing songs for an hour and a half in our back parking lot (it was too hot on the front lawn that evening). We had a nice turnout including some folks from Marshallton and Cedars. Refreshments of fresh-popped Popcorn and water were served. It was a great experience!

Some of the items donated to the “Totes for Teachers” outreach this year. Each of the teachers at Urban Promise School will receive a tote full of much needed items for the new school year! Thank you!

Labor DayLabor Day, an annual celebration of workers and their achievements, originated during one of American labor history’s most dismal chapters. In the late 1800s, at the height of the Industrial Revolution in the U.S., the average American worked 12-hour days and seven-day weeks in order to eke out a basic living. Despite restrictions in some states, children as young as 5 or 6 toiled in mills, factories and mines across the country, earning a fraction of their adult counterparts’ wages. People of all ages, particularly the very poor and recent immigrants, often faced extremely unsafe working conditions, with insufficient access to fresh air, sanitary facilities and breaks.

As manufacturing increasingly supplanted agriculture as the wellspring of American employment, labor unions, which had first appeared in the late 18th century, grew more prominent and vocal. They began organizing strikes and rallies to protest poor conditions and compel employers to renegotiate hours and pay. Many of these events turned violent during this period, including the infamous Haymarket Riot of 1886, in which several Chicago policemen and workers were killed. Others gave rise to longstanding traditions: On September 5, 1882, 10,000 workers took unpaid time off to march from City Hall to Union Square in New York City, holding the first Labor Day parade in U.S. history.

The idea of a “workingmen’s holiday,” celebrated on the first Monday in September, caught on in other industrial centers across the country, and many states passed legislation recognizing it. Congress would not legalize the holiday until 12 years later, when a watershed moment in American labor history brought workers’ rights squarely into the public’s view. On May 11, 1894, employees of the Pullman Palace Car Company in Chicago went on strike to protest wage cuts and the firing of union representatives.

On June 26, the American Railroad Union, led by Eugene V. Debs, called for a boycott of all Pullman railway cars, crippling railroad traffic nationwide. To break the strike, the federal government dispatched troops to Chicago, unleashing a wave of riots that resulted in the deaths of more than a dozen workers. In the wake of this massive unrest and in an attempt to repair ties with American workers, Congress passed an act making Labor Day a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories. More than a century later, the true founder of Labor Day has yet to be identified. Source: History.com
