Note: It is the responsibility of all participants to be in possession of the correct documentation to travel out of the country. Failure to do so will result in participants being denied entry/boarding and returned home at the expense of the individual. Canadian Citizens require a valid passport (authorities at your destination require that passports are valid for 3 months beyond your return date). Ellison Travel & Tours recommends passports are valid for 6 months beyond your return date. Non-Canadians must check entry and transit requirements. Day 1 – Sunday, January 28 – arrive San Jose D

Welcome to San Jose, Costa Rica. Upon group arrival at Juan Santamaría International Airport meet our English speaking local guide who will remain with the group for the duration of the tour. Continue on our private mini-bus transfer* from the airport to our hotel and check in for a 1 night stay.

*Group transfer will be scheduled to connect with the designated group flight. Arrangements can be made, at an additional cost, for private transfers to meet other flight times. We would be pleased to book flights on the designated flight from Toronto or any other departure gateway. Ask our agents for details.

Stretch your legs after the flight with a guided walking tour of San Jose. From public libraries that were torn down and became quirky parking lots, to hidden pieces of the Berlin Wall as well as kitsch canteens nestled in the local markets, together with our guide, we will see the local aesthetics of this constantly changing cosmopolitan Latin city.

Tonight enjoy traditional Costa Rican dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight at Hotel Park Inn (or similar)

Day 2 – Monday, January 29 – Poas Volcano & Artisian Town to Arenal B/L/D This morning we travel by private mini-bus to the Arenal area. First, stop to enjoy a morning

walking tour and visit to the iconic open crater at Poas Volcano. Poás Volcano is a powerful symbol of the geothermal forces that formed Costa Rica. When the

mist and clouds part you’ll see the sulfuric, bubbling, green rain fed lake at the bottom, surrounded by smoke and steam rising from fumaroles. Water from the lake is constantly seeping through cracks in the hot rock, evaporating and building pockets of steam. At almost a mile (1.6 km) across it’s also the largest active crater in the world.

Continuing along the way we will stop at two artisan towns. Here we’ll meet the local people, see the stunning views and learn about their local traditions. Enjoy this day of local culture before continuing to the Arenal area and check into our hotel for a 2 night stay.

Dinner and overnight in the Arenal area at the Arenal Oasis Lodge (or similar)

Day 3 – Tuesday, January 30 – Arenal B/S Take a leisurely ride on horseback to the pristine La Fortuna waterfall. Listen to the birds and

wildlife as we travel through the lush rainforest home to toucans, monkeys, peccaries, coatis and other wildlife. La Fortuna waterfall emerges from dense jungle greenery before plummeting some 65m (200 feet) into an emerald pool below. Bring a suit and take a plunge in the chilly water below.

In the afternoon, meet a member of the Maleku indigenous community. Learn first-hand about one of Costa Rica’s most interesting native communities, their customs, food, folklore and natural lifestyle.

Return to the hotel and enjoy an evening at leisure. Choose to dine at one of the many

restaurants in the nearby town of La Fortuna, relax at the lodge or an optional visit to Ecotermales Hot Springs.

Day 4 – Wednesday, January 31 – to Monteverde B/D Depart by mini-bus to Monteverde. Upon arrival enjoy a walking tour and learn about the

history and culture, the role of women in the local development, handmade organic products, ecological treasures and the innovations in sustainability. Later meet one of the members of the founding families of Monteverde. More than 60 years ago the Quakers came from the US, escaping the military draft and settled here, in the beautiful forest in the a country that had just abolished the army. Historians believe the conservation movement that later swept the country started here. Learn first-hand about this interesting story from an elder member of the family. Continue to our eco-lodge and check in for a 2 night stay.

Dinner and overnight in Monteverde at Cloud Forest Lodge (or similar)

Day 5 – Thursday, February 1 – Monteverde B/L In the morning visit “Dona Hermidia” at her authentic family farm. See the traditional way

farmers cultivate their fruit, legumes and vegetables. At the end of the tour enjoy her coffee and “gallos” (Costa Rican tacos of vegetable stew) for lunch on the farm. In the afternoon continue to a natural theme park to visit a butterfly and hummingbird garden. Later choose between the amazing hanging bridges or the fast canopy zip lines. After a full day of adventure return to the lodge for an evening at leisure.

Overnight in Monteverde at Cloud Forest Lodge (or similar)

Day 6 – Friday, February 2 – to Manuel Antonio National Park B/L Depart by mini-bus to the coastal area of the Central Pacific. Enjoy lunch upon arrival and then

prepare for an immersion of natural surroundings with an afternoon visit to Manuel Antonio National Park. This park is one of the jewels of the country offering beautiful white sand beaches and lush tropical forests. Here we’ll likely be greeted by white faced capuchin monkeys, Morpho butterflies, birds and maybe a few other curious mammals as we explore this small yet super bio-diverse national treasure with our guide. Continue to our hotel and check in for a 2 night stay.

Overnight at Manuel Antonio Hotel Plaza Yara (or similar)

Day 7 – Saturday, February 3 – Manuel Antonio B/L/D Today we’ll explore Manuel Antonio on a sailboat. Sail past the offshore islets, which serve as

rookeries to the abundant species of birds like the brown boobies, frigates and pelicans. As we glide through the water we may even encounter dolphins and giant sea turtles. Anchor for lunch at beautiful Jungle Bay and those who like to snorkel will be delighted with the fascinating and colourful fish at the nearby reef. Bring your underwater camera!
