MESSAGE FROM THE CEODear Member,
The club industry is facing challenging times.
The pressures by the Gillard / Wilkie deal to impose mandatory pre-commitment (MPC) on our industry, ClubsNSW, creates unnecessary uncertainty for Clubs in being able to plan future developments and refurbishments that benefit members and the overall community. ClubsNSW has been very active in it’s campaign with the next stage of awareness commencing through the Won’t Work, Will Hurt campaign.
There is clearly a lack of any evidence that MPC would help lower the rate of problem gambling. We support a voluntary and venue based approach to pre-commitment. It is unfortunate the government of today is held to a deal with Mr Wilkie whom, may I add, received less votes at the last election than we have members. A deal that means our industry would need to outlay $3billion to implement something that lacks any credible evidence in it’s favour and all without a trial to show it would even work.
It is often during challenging times that the biggest opportunities present themselves. Such couldn’t be truer for norths.
Into the New Year we will continue to work on the areas you have identified as opportunities for improvement and make those things you love about us even better.
We have learnt that although the norths Group consists of seagulls Club too, members from both Clubs want their own magazine!...so this month is the first edition of the Bear Facts on its own.
We have learnt that you cherish the safety and security our venue provides so we will continue to look at ways that we can make both you and our employees safer.
We have learnt that our outdoor terrace in winter can be cold, wet and windy whilst in summer it can be too hot and sunny, so we will be making improvements early next year to provide you with a more comfortable experience with year round protection from the elements.
We have learnt that our gaming stools could do with some tender loving care so we will be giving them a replacement / makeover in December and January.
We have learnt that our food offering and service can be improved. With catering currently contracted out, we will work tirelessly with the caterer to meet your expectations with the aim of exceeding them.
We have also learnt that our My Choice Rewards program could do with a facelift. With structured improvements that will make it less confusing and which will add far more value, we are on track to deliver the new and improved program early in the New Year.
Shortly I hope to announce the successful applicant of a newly created role at norths of Head of People, Culture and Business. This roll comes as we are ready to energise, develop and re-commit to a vision of People, Culture, Business and future financial successes. In re-focusing on service and our product offer, we know that our people are vital for our success and we will work hard to engage them whilst understanding their motivations.
Thank you to all those members of our community that attended our most recent Max Potential Showcase that saw many young leaders of tomorrow showcase their talents and achievements through the program.
I take this opportunity to wish all our members and their families a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

North Sydney Leagues Club recently delivered $100,000 to local charities as part of the ClubGRANTS scheme.
The money has been shared largely with local North Sydney organisations said club CEO Luke Simmons. “This cash injection goes to aid a variety of mostly local charities that are making a change for the better in the North Sydney area.”
Among the 20 recipients is the Crows Nest Centre which has used the funds to improve their meals on wheels, linen
delivery and home visit programs. Executive Officer of the centre,

norths is proud to have once again sponsored the Max Potential Youth Leadership Development project for 2011. 16 local young adults from North Sydney Boys High, Bradfield Senior College, St Aloysius College, Monte St Angelo, TAFE and North Sydney Girls High were teamed up with community coaches for 22 solid weeks of leadership guidance and community engagement. The coaches included norths CEO Luke Simmons and ClubsNSW CEO Anthony Ball amongst many other business and community leaders.
The final project of the program was the delivery of a community service activity developed by each of the participants which were showcased at norths on October 21.Among the outstanding assignments were “Sounds in the Street” where talented St Aloysius student Michael Paton worked with Father Chris Riley’s Youth Off The Streets charity to provide a free concert and dinner for the homeless. Michael was coached by Olivier Bjorksater-Bleylock, Editor of Club Life magazine.Bradfield College’s Courtney McNamara

Live It Love It November 2011 - January 2012
The NSW Government is pleased to announce the return of 140 weekly ferry services to the North Shore after they were cut by the previous Labor Government.Last month I joined the Health Minister and Member for North Shore Jillian Skinner to announce these services would return from October 24. This is great news for anyone who uses the ferry service to move around our city. The NSW Liberals & Nationals campaigned to increase public transport options, and we are delivering. We need to be encouraging people to catch public transport, and by returning these services we hope to encourage people to get out of their cars and make use of our beautiful harbour. The NSW Government will re-introduce 30 minute daytime off-peak frequencies for Mosman and Neutral Bay on weekdays. This will restore 140 weekly services to the North Shore. The return of these services is not just good news for people who use ferries. It will help ease congestion on Spit and Military roads by increasing the travel options for commuters. The hourly off-peak service we had under Labor saw people driving their cars to work and for errands into the city.I am pleased to be able to reinstate these ferries so commuters on the North Shore have better public transport options and more services. Growing patronage on our ferry network is a key priority for the NSW Government. We have listened to the community’s concerns and that is why we are restoring services on the North Shore, adding new services in the Inner West, and have better matched other services across the network. The future for Sydney Ferries is very bright. More services are on the way, and we expect to be able to provide more good news for passengers as the franchising process continues.
Denise Ward, said the donation from norths – among several other donations – allowed for the purchase of their first and only car which would make a considerable difference to their operations, “The new vehicle means that we can reliably provide the services, particularly on occasions when we are short of volunteers with cars – we can now meet the gaps.”
Other causes supported included Leukemia, aged home care, mental health, disability, children’s hospital medical equipment, youth job assistance as well as the Men of League Foundation aged care program.
Since 2005 North Sydney Leagues Club has donated over one million dollars to charities.
2011 recipients were:
• Constant Companion/Willoughby Council
• Crows Nest Occasional Care Centre
• Delta Society Australia
• Disabled Alternative Road Transport
• Future Achievement Australia Foundation Ltd
• Job Support• Kelly’s Place Children’s Centre• Kids Like Brett• Leukemia Foundation• Men of League Foundation• North Sydney Community Service

• Taldumande Youth Services• The Young Love Foundation• Wheelchair Sports NSW

gathered a team of friends to provide a Saturday morning gardening service for elderly residents through the Lane Cove Community Aid Service and Firmin Li from North Sydney Boys High used donated parts from various computer vendors to assemble a computer and donate it to the after school care program at North Sydney Community Centre.Another group form North Sydney Girls High led by Megha Kadian and coached by Jillian Christie from North Sydney Council, visited James Milson Village, an aged care and retirement facility in North Sydney, to offer residents manicures, hand massages and an afternoon of personal pampering. For full details on the young adults, community coaches and all their projects visit www.noths.com.au/MaxPotential

November 2011 - January 2012 Live It Love It
The Central Coast Bears have been extremely busy over the past couple of months as they put the final touches on what is an already outstanding Bid for inclusion in an expanded NRL competition. The private ownership model of the Bid has gone from strength to strength with the Bears having recently announced two significant investment commitments. Bluetongue Stadium has signed off on an investment of $2 million to become a shareholder in the Central Coast Bears upon the granting of an NRL License. Central Coast Bears CEO, Greg Florimo said: “I am delighted to announce that Bluetongue Stadium is proactively supporting us in our Bid to become the first new franchise included in an expanded NRL competition”. Off the back of this announcement, the Bears were more recently pleased to announce an additional shareholder in JJ Lawson Custom and Freight Brokers. Jim Lawson, the Managing Director of JJ Lawson Custom and Freight Brokers,
who has been heavily involved with the Central Coast Bears Bid to date, said of his additional investment:“Our Company is committed to assisting the Central Coast Bears bid for an NRL License. The dedication of those working tirelessly on the bid submission is inspiring and their efforts hopefully will be rewarded with a NRL License”.The current NSW Government has also reaffirmed their support for the Bears Bid. Having previously pledged considerable land and funding for the Bears home facility upon the granting of a license, Minister for Sport and Recreation and former NRL COO, Graham Annesley, has recently committed to further assist the Bid due to the positive benefits that he can see it will deliver to both the state of NSW and the Central Coast in particular. In addition to these key developments, the following points are also worth reiterating:• The Bears official Bid Document is all
but ready to go and delivers a great insight into what the establishment of
this franchise will deliver to the game as a whole.
• 7,238 financial members and over 26,000 Facebook fans with these numbers growing daily.
• Major sponsorship announcements to be expected soon.
• Introduction of new business partnership initiative through Supporter Packages targeted at small to medium size businesses on the Central Coast and North Shore of Sydney.
• Additional private equity investors currently being negotiated.
• Beneficial additions to the Bears Board of Directors, with the first of these being Monique Marks, Managing Director of Bluetongue Stadium.
• Recent positive discussions held with relevant broadcasters.
• Overwhelming confidence in our Bid via fan polls recently run through major print publications, including Rugby League Week and the Daily Telegraph’s 2011 NRL Fan Survey.

The mighty North Sydney Bears finished within the top 4 of the NSW Cup competition, going down to the Canterbury Bulldogs 28 - 10 in the preliminary final. This was a tough match but Coach Wayne Lambkin was more than happy with their achievements beforehand:“I couldn’t be prouder. Every week we had a number of injuries from Souths but I was always confident with the 1 - 17 on the field every week. It was a massive effort to be only one game away from a grand final. On paper we may have lacked the NRL experience but I think we more than matched it with the top 3 sides”.
A special congratulation goes to Bears winger Curtis Johnston. Curtis was not only the Bears top try scorer but also for the entire NSW Cup competition, ending the season on a staggering 26 tries from 21 games. A huge effort for the local junior earning himself a summer squad contract with the South Sydney Rabbitohs. Players Neccrom Areaiiti, Brendan McKinnon and Alex Ranieri were also rewarded for their great efforts throughout the season, signing with 2012 South Sydney Rabbitohs. Go the Mighty Bears!

Now is the time to start thinking about what sport you want to play in 2012. Rugby League is a safe, fun sport that is very reasonably priced in comparison to other sports and activities. There are modified rules for U12’s to U6’s and a safe play code operates for all grades U15 down. All games are played in a safe and friendly environment where participation, fun and learning the skills of the game are the prime concern. Qualified referees, coaches
