The Great American Solar Eclipse BGCS had the privilege of leaving school early to be able to witness the solar eclipse. The moon blocked more than 90% of the sun for about two minutes. In preparation for viewing the eclipse, students Jenna Davenport, Nate Mizell, and Keagan Wilkerson gave a presentation in the auditorium about how to be safe while enjoying the experience. A few of the science classes made projection boxes for students to take home to help them view the phenomenon safely. Several students had the NASA approved glasses or viewed the eclipse through a welder’s mask and said it was “a really cool experience” although they wished we had been in the path of totality where it would have been darker.

New School Year – New Sports TeamBGCS Adds Football to Sports Program

Bryar Ables and Maci Bullock- With the start of the sixth year of BGCS, the school has a football team! Although it is the first time for many of the athletes to play this sport, the team had an impressive win over Lejeune Devil Pups (34-8) in their opening game on the road and a home victory of 42-6 against Creswell. Senior Reid Harrison, lineman, stated that the “Bears will be very productive” this year. Fellow seniors Klint Congeton and Hunter Scott enjoy the physical roughness of the sport, but said it was difficult when “it is hot outside and you have to wear all the padding with the uniform.”

Sixth gradersHolly Modlin – Many of the new sixth grade students say that BGCS is just the school for them. The students enjoy the differences of moving to middle school from the elementary level. Kailey Wells believes there is more freedom at this age. “Being able to not wear uniforms is really great!” she said in considering the differences in schools. The sixth graders are also excited about the possibilities of joining in the after school clubs, but almost all of them agree their main goal for the year is to “work hard and pass my grade.”

Mrs. Goetz

Miss White

Christina and Charly Gurganus – Meghan Goetz is ready for a history making year by joining the BGCS faculty teaching American History and Civics. Mrs. Goetz is from Martin County and graduated from Bear Grass High School. She has taught middle school Social Studies and English over the last six years and taught a high school English class in Russia. Mrs. Goetz is married with four children. She said, “I really wanted to be in a place where I could enjoy my job and enjoy teaching” and that Bear Grass “feels more like home.”

Adison Bosso – Madeline White is the new Language Arts teacher for sixth grade. Miss White is part of the first graduating class from BGCS and is the first alumni to return to work at the school. “I absolutely love Bear Grass! It is a wonderful school with wonderful people.” Miss White studied Reading Education in college, but she said that she did not enjoy English classes until she went to college. “Math was always my favorite subject in school because I felt like I was better at it, but I do not feel confident teaching math.”

Surfing for Autism Bryar Ables and Maci Bullock – Surfing for Autism is an event which was created in 2010 for families to come and enjoy a wonderful time together. This year, two BGCS students were able to go to the Outer Banks where they were paired with surfers and learn to ride some waves. “It is a lot harder than it looks,” said senior Brandon Revels. Freshman Rich Honican has attended for several years with his family. His sister, Lucy said, “I love seeing my brother smile” as she described watching the event. Siblings are able to fish from the pier as part of the fun weekend.

Charly and Christine Gurganus – Health Science Career labs have arrived at BGCS for seventh, eighth, and ninth grades. Mrs. Lewellyn Davenport oversees the classes after attending a workshop this summer to acquaint herself with the lab setup. The high school students work through eight modules in a semester exploring Nursing, EMT, Sports Medicine, Veterinarian, Dentist, and Bioengineer careers. The modules typically take ten days to complete with many hands-on activities to accompany the lessons.

Middle School students are able to explore four of the careers during a semester. They experience real life simulations of the various medical careers such as drawing blood, examining x-rays, using an endoscopy, and treating injuries. “The class is very fun. We get to do awesome activities and silly things with classmates,” said eighth grader, Briana Keech.

Changes for CheerleadersKayla Jones and Kimberly Basden – Not only are fans and athletes enjoying the new experience of having a football team, BGCS cheerleaders are also participating. In the past, the cheerleaders have pepped up crowds during pep rallies and basketball games, but now they have the opportunity to cheer outside where they must stand for the game. Junior Brandie Coltrain said, “Cheering for the first football team in Bear Grass is crazy. I like cheering because we help hype up the crowd.” The sixteen member squad is led by Leigh Ann Long and Madeline White.

Soccer Team Prepares for New Season Holly Modlin – Coach Matthew Watson is excited a about the prospects of the new year in soccer sinc since he has several experienced players returning to the team. He believes even the young players “have enthusiasm and are ready for the season.” He believes the BGCS Bears have the ability to win the state conference this year as was demonstrated when they defeat North East Prep on Wednesday, Sept. 30!
