V. DIVERSITY AND GROWTH: THE DEFEAT OF OUR EXPECTATIONS

The features have isolated n the recordof the Arval Brethrenonfound hecommonassumption hat the Arval Acta are rigidly tandardised ocuments.Diversitynd growtheem urprisingor hreemainreasons.

First, here sa sharp ontrast etween hediversityf heArvalrecordsndthenormal cholarly iew thatRoman ritualwas unbendinglyonservative.t is veryoften tatedthatRoman religious eremonies erecarried utyearafteryear nprecisely he same way, down to the minutest etail. Secondly, hehistoryfthecultmightead us toexpectnotan increase, ut agradualdecrease n the evel of recordkeeping. We might easonablyuppose, orexample, hat theoriginal urpose f the nscribed ocumentswas to establishndetail heform f henewritual ctivitiesmposed ntheBrethrenyAugustus;hatis, theActa, s records fprocedure, ere nthefirstnstance o form practical oolofreferenceor hebrotherhood, hile henewritual rocesses ere till nfamiliar. In this
