Honor Flight Chicago Honor Flight Chicago is a 5 0 1c3 non-profit organization that was founded in 20 08 to recognize our

Veterans—most specifically our W W II Veterans—with a day of honor , remembrance and celebration

from a proud and grateful nation. Since inception, Honor Flight Chicago has take over 1 ,290 veterans

on all-expenses paid tr ips to see the W or ld W ar II Memor ial in W ashington, D.C.

The following is an interview conducted by Bears Vice Chairman, George H. McCaskey, with W W II Vet-

eran Char les J. Sauber after he returned from his Honor Flight tr ip in July:

W hen Chuck Sauber heard about W or ld W ar II veterans going on an all-expenses paid tr ip to W ashing-

ton, D.C., he didn’t need much convincing.

―A couple of people told me that they had gone on it , and they thought it was wonder ful,‖ he said. ―So,

[my son] Jim thought it would be a good thing if he signed me up.‖

Sauber and some ninety other veterans visited the National W or ld W ar II memor ial on July 14 as guests

of Honor Flight Chicago. The all-volunteer organization’s mission is to fly as many local veterans to see the memor ial built in their

honor . Each veteran is accompanied by a ―guardian‖ – usually a family member – who pays his or her own way.

Char les J. ―Chuck‖ Sauber , now 90 , fought in the Philippines with the United States Army’s 32 nd Infantry Division, operating a

Browning Automatic Rifle. He points out that there are many things about war that you’re ―happy to forget.‖ But he vividly recalls

the day his service ended, and he was reunited with his wife, Lorraine.

―The happiest day of my whole life was the day that I had my discharge, and [with] my backpack on my shoulder , walked out the door

and saw an absolutely beautiful person who I had missed for many, many months,‖ he said. ―I thought I might be having a hear t

attack, it was such an extraordinary, tremendous, wonder ful feeling to see her .‖

Sixty-five years later , at the W or ld W ar II memor ial on the National Mall, Sauber

thought of those who did not return from the war .

―W hen I saw that there were more than four thousand gold stars there, and [each star ]

represented a hundred different people that had sacr ificed their life in W or ld W ar II, it

almost made you feel ashamed of yourself for surviving,‖ he said. ―It made me feel like

I owed a lot to the people that we lost.‖

W hile Sauber says the more than 40 0 ,00 0 Amer ican service personnel who died in the

war are the real heroes, he and the other veterans on the Honor Flight received a he-

roes’ welcome when they returned to Chicago’s M idway Airpor t. Hundreds of well-

wishers turned out to cheer them and thank them for their service. Sauber , a life-long

resident of the village of Virgil and father of sixteen children, had a large contingent of

fr iends and family await ing his return. For him, that was the most memorable par t of

the tr ip.

―There were so many people there and they were so enthusiastic,‖ he said. ―[I] just

couldn’t believe that so many of them showed up. My one granddaughter drove all the

way from Michigan to be there. She was here with me and when the ceremony was

over she drove back to M ichigan. That was gratifying.‖

There is a wait ing list of more than 1 ,30 0 Chicago-area veterans who have signed up, hoping to make the tr ip to W ashington, D.C.

Their average age is estimated to be 88 years old. Honor Flight Chicago is a 5 01 (c)(3 ) non-profit organization. For more infor ma-

book repor ts. This notebook allows the students to keep track of the books that they read dur ing

the program. Every child who achieves the goal of reading three books per month for the three

month per iod will be entered into a random drawing for the chance to win a special ―Bears Exper i-
