BEAT THE HEAT (AVOID HEAT ILLNESS) With school sports back in session, hot practice and games days are inevitable. TIPS ON HOW TO AVOID OVERHEATING: Wear light moisture wicking clothing Hydrate before, during, and after practice/game Have frequent water breaks in the shade Utilize ice towels on the sideline to stay cool Move practice times to cooler times during the day, such as early mornings Limit the duration of practice on a hot day RECOGNIZE HEAT RELATED ILLNESSES SIGNS & SYMPTOMS OF HEAT EXHAUSTION: SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF HEAT STROKE: Heavy sweating Nausea Confusion Vomiting Goose bumps Extreme fatigue Weak and rapid pulse Bizarre behavior Significant confusion Lack of consciousness A strong and fast pulse Red skin Either heavy sweating or a cessation of sweating A temperature greater than 1040 *THE MHSAA HAS STRICT GUIDELINES WHEN IT COMES TO HEAT AND HUMIDITY, BE SURE YOU SPEAK WITH YOUR ATHLETIC TRAINER ABOUT HOW TO ADHERE TO THESE RULES. With school sports back in session, hot practice and games days are inevitable.

TIPS ON HOW TO AVOID OVERHEATING:

• Wear light moisture wicking clothing
