Welcome back students and a special welcome to our sixth graders. It is always exciting to begina new year and continue the next level of learning with students.

The success of your child is greatly influenced by the teachers, school environment, and you asthe parent. Below are my “Top 10 Keys for Student Success” parents can do to help improve yourodds for a successful school year.

These 10 Keys are important to your child’s success and are great habits to create. We lookforward to serving your child and enjoying a great year together.

1. Sit down regularly and talk with your child about school2. Have your child share something learned recently3. Know who your child’s friends are and their parents4. Communicate with teachers and counselors5. Attend Parent-Teacher Conferences6. Stress the importance of joining a school activity or organization7. Join and attend Parent Council8. Encourage Reading and completing homework9. Go through and understand the student handbook together10. Make sure your child gets adequate sleep and is eating healthy

Welcome to the 2011-2012 school year. I am Mrs. Amy Randel the school counselor here at Beatrice MiddleSchool. I work with all students 6th thru 8th grade. I am able to help students in many different ways includingsetting academic goals, setting career goals and helping students work on personal and social issues. I am in theclassroom teaching one day a week. I call this day BONUS day, which stands for a Brilliant Opportunity toNurture and Understand Students. I attempt to get to know each student personally. I meet with kids in smallgroups and individually as needed. I am part of the SAT (Student Assistance Team) that helps identify studentacademic concerns. We also have a SCIP (School Community Intervention Program) Team that is a resource forstudents who may need an intervention related to social or personal issues in their lives. Thru the SCIP team, students can be referred to Blue Valley Behavior Health for personal or family counseling needs. I work withMs. Hollman our Art teacher to organize a group called SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions). Allstudents can be part of this group that meets the first Monday of the month during mentor. Sign up for SADDwill be the first week of September. Encourage your child to part of SADD. Beatrice has an active TeamMatesprogram. TeamMates is a great mentoring program open to all students. Caring adults come to school and meetwith kids one on one each week. If you or someone you know would like to be a mentor, please let me know. If wehad enough adult mentors we would match all students up with another caring adult in their lives. I am veryexcited about TeamMates and the work they are doing with “Strength Finder” and building on student strengthsand their potential to succeed. I team with teachers weekly at each grade level and am in contact with parentsand administrators on a daily basis to help kids succeed in school. In the counseling department we also have Mr.Tracy Post who is at BMS on Mondays and works specifically in 8th grade classrooms. The other 4 days a weekMr. Post is at the high school as a school counselor. We also have a new addition to Beatrice Public Schools, Mrs.Jill Rice. Jill is a community counselor who will be working in our school district this year and will be at BMS onTuesdays. Please feel free to contact me at 223-1500 ext. 1105 or at 223-1545 or email [email protected], ifI can be of any assistance.

Have you heard the news? There is a facility in town that has been developed just for teens in grades 6-12! The 429 Factory, located at 923 W. Court St., offers a wide range of programming and entertainment options, both after

school and on weekends. The youth center houses a full size gymnasium, snack shop, gameroom, study area as well as a lounge area containing pool tables and a 50" big screen televi-sion. As the program builds they will begin to add specialized programming as well. Studentsmust be members to use the facility and membership only costs $20 a year! The 429 Factory isalso seeking adults to help monitor the center when it is open for use. Membership Forms andVolunteer Forms are available at www.429factory.org. Questions can be directed to the cen-ters' director, Eric Buckwalter, at 402-806-4225. Come check out Gage County's newest youthcenter, you'll be glad you did!

SADD is a group for ALL students. SADD stands for Students Against Destructive Decisions. We meet once a month in the Health and Fitness room during mentor time. We have a different topiceach month. In the past some of the topics we have discussed in our meetings have been the dangersof drugs, alcohol and tobacco, suicide, youth violence and eating disorders. Last year we even had theState Patrol demonstrate the dangers of not wearing a seatbelt using their roll-over car. During ourmeetings we play games and have fun helping each other make good decisions while learning aboutthese serious topics.

There will be an opportunity for students to sign up very soon. Be sure to have your child listento the announcements to know where and when to sign up for SADD. Students will be asked to sign apledge to remain drug and alcohol free this year.

The goal of SADD is to empower young people to live safer, healthier, more positive lives andwe want EVERYONE to join us. The adults helping to sponsor SADD this year are Ms. Hollman, Mr.Post and Mrs. Randel. Please feel free to call the school if you have any questions about SADD.

The scheduled hours at this time for Middle School students are:Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday: 3:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.

Wednesday: 2:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.Friday: 3:30 p.m. - 9:30 a.m.

A new change to Nebraska's School Immunization Regulations requires that students must show proof ofhaving received a varicella vaccines, or if they have had the disease, must validate the year during which theyhad it. If you have not already done so, please provide this information to the Middle School office. If your childhas had neither the chickenpox nor 2 shots, they will not be allowed in school. Such immunization is availableat no charge at the Gage County Immunization Clinic, which is open the 3rd Monday (9am - 12noon) and the3rd Tuesday and Thursday (4pm - 7pm) of every month. Please call the nurse at 223-1500, ext 1193 with anyconcerns.

A new regulation from the Nebraska School Activities Association (“NSAA”) for students starting with the 2008-2009 school year is therequirement for a sports clearance form in order to participate in interscholastic athletics.

FOR 7th GRADE STUDENTS:Students entering 7th grade who are planning on participating in sports can utilize their 7th grade entrance physical as a sports physical, but a“Clearance Form” will be required from the physician designating whether or not the student can participate in athletics with or withoutrestrictions. Both the physical and the clearance form need to be turned into the Nurse’s Office before the student athlete can participate inathletics.

FOR 8th GRADE STUDENTS:Students entering 8th grade who are planning to participate in sports will need to have a sports physical completed. A sports physical form orclearance form is required from the physician designating whether or not the student can participate in athletics with or without restrictions.

The clearance forms (complete with a physician’s signature) need to be turned into the Nurse’s Office before the student athlete can beallowed to participate. If you have any questions, please contact the Nurse’s Office at 223-1500 ext. #1193.

State law requires that all seventh graders must have a physical exam and a Tdap vaccination. They were due at the beginningof school in August. Please return the completed forms and immunization record to the main office. These physicals alsoqualify as your sports physical. Eighth graders going out for a sport must present a physical (performed after May 1 of this year)prior to participation.

WELCOME BACK TO ALL NEW AND RETURNING STUDENTS!!

Breakfast and lunch are an important part of a child's day so it's also important to know the way we handle the lunch accounts at theMiddle School--so all children can participate in the program.

Deposits to lunch accounts can be made at the office. In order to cut down on processing time, checks would be appreciated and we willonly accept deposits of at least $5.00. Please write the name of the child(ren) on the check. Each child will be informed when theirbalances become low--around $3.00, at which time it is the child's responsibility to tell their parents they need money. No child will beallowed to purchase ala carte items, including Valentino's pizza, unless they have money in their account.

Our Infinite Campus Portal now allows parents/staff to make payments to their lunch accounts on-line!! A notice on the portalwelcome screen tells users about this opportunity. We have had one family take advantage of this already! Right now the only method ofpayment allowed is by bank draft. Bank draft is up and going...it has been tested...and works great! It saves time - the payment is postedautomatically. Mrs. Bornemeier will get reports each day from the bank showing how much was deposited. We are not accepting creditcards because of fees.

Students are limited to taking two low or non-nutritional items along with their lunch.

If a child falls behind on their account, we reserve the right to refuse service to your child. The children will be warned several days in arow that unless they bring money they will receive no meals. This will help keep all student accounts up-to-date. Any parent withconcerns, questions, or wanting a printout can call Ms. May at the Middle School at 223-1500, ext. 1111.

ALL INSUFFICIENT CHECKS WILL BE DEDUCTED FROM THESTUDENT'S ACCOUNT ALONG WITH A $15 COLLECTION FEE.

Tackling textbooksHow to get started

Tim is staring blankly at his social studies book. He is supposed to read a chapter on the federal government, but hekeeps finding reasons to put it off.

Does this sound like your child? If so, share these tips for reading textbooks. Answering the questions below beforereading will help boost his comprehension - and motivation.

Why am I reading it?When your child knows the purpose of an assignment, he can figure out how to approach it. Is he preparing for a classdiscussion (needs to understand the 'big picture")? Does he have to answer homework questions (find specific information)? Is he getting ready for a test (looking for facts)?

How does it relate to me?Relating the topic to your child's own experiences makes the information more interesting and easier to understand. Example:"Do you remember seeing the White House? This chapter tells you what it's like inside. Le me know what you find out."

What is it really about?Encourage your child to spend a few minutes scanning the entire chapter. Are there headlines and subheads? Questions at theend of each section? Footnotes or vocabulary words with definitions? Charts, graphs, or pictures with captions? This processwill give him a broad overview of the information.

Hint: If your child still needs help getting started, try reading the first page or section aloud.

BMS Sports ScheduleSeptember 2010

Beatrice Middle School will develop its own Strategic Plan during the 2011 – 2012 school year. The purpose of a strategic plan is to guide the school toward meeting the mission and vision ofthe individual school and school district. Many of you will recall the process used by the BPSsystem to develop the district strategic plan. The district plan has led to the development ofthe outdoor multi-purpose facility, remodeling of Paddock Lane, along with changes in the cur-riculum to meet state standards. Now it is time for BMS to develop a specific plan that willguide the administration and staff to meet the needs of our students. The Strategic PlanningCommittee will consist of staff members, parents, and community members.
