FROM THE PRESIDENT Welcome to the May Newsletter. My, how time flies when you are having fun. Joy and I are back from holidays, the May General Meeting has been held, the Committee Meeting has come and gone and we are nearly into June (our 1st Year Anniversary).

Half the year has almost passed with only six months to Christmas. Speaking of Christmas, our outings to Branxton Drovers Camp for ‘Christmas in July’ has currently 45 members attending; there is still some space (not much) on the coach if you would like to attend. Add your name to the Outings Sheet, the cost is $65 per person and must be paid in full at the July meeting on the 5th.

As mentioned above our Anniversary Dinner is on Friday the 21st June at Springfield House Dural. We currently have 54 members attending, the dinner and a great night are sure to be had by all. If you would still like to attend, add your name to the list on the Outings Table. Monies of $55 per person must be paid at the June meeting.

At the last Committee meeting, it was passed by all present, that we shall start the processes of Incorporation of the Beaumont Hills Probus Club. Now that we have the new PSPL Constitution, Ron Miller will start work on a complete study of the issues we need to address to be incorporated, he will also start on the draft standing resolutions for our Club. Once the Committee has approved these documents, Ron will make a formal presentation to all our members for their approval. It is hoped that we can make this presentation to the members in July or August and if passed by the members; we can then lodge the said documents to the appropriate legislation authority to enable incorporation to be granted. Good luck Ron from all the Committee members.

At the last Committee meeting, membership was bestowed to 6 new members, making our total membership to 91. 65 Female/26 Male (we need more men for our gender balance).

Attendance numbers for the May meeting was 63, Apologies 24 and Visitors 6.

Don’t forget your Renewal for Membership must be paid by June meeting.

Keep safe and stay healthy and have “Fun”.

Kerry

ART GROUP VISIT TO THE ART GALLERY

This article was a contribution from Kris Pannah, who attended the above outing. I thank Kris so much for her feedback and encourage others who are in attendance, and enjoy the occasions arranged by members, to put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) as all submissions will be gratefully accepted with thanks.

Just thought I'd send you some feedback on our great day out, to see the Archibald Prize at the NSW Art Gallery.

A fabulous day...and so well organised. It began with clockwork travel connections that took us door to door. It's not too bad at all, being able to travel into and around our beautiful city for $2.50.

The artwork was so diverse and I was amazed at the talent of our artists. It included some easy to understand paintings yet others were esoteric. Others were political and emotional, i.e. Xu Wang's gripping self portrait of his interview with Maoist victims. I did have a chuckle at Lindeman's humorous work titled Self Portrait. It was a letter written to the Art Gallery Trustees, asking to win, so he could pay his debts. He included a quick sketch of himself with open hands on the bottom of it. Very cheeky.

The winner was a work by Del Kathryn Barton of the actor Hugo Weaving. However, my personal favourites were the portraits of Tara Moss and Asher Keddie. Both works were so life like, that it seemed either woman could emerge from them at any time.

I would also like to give a huge thank you to Yolanda, who generously shared her vast knowledge of art with me. The outing was very enjoyable all round and complimented by a perfect, warm Sydney autumn day. Carpe diem.

JUNE GUEST SPEAKER It is hoped that a large number of our members will be able to attend our next monthly meeting on 7th June as our Guest Speaker will be Margie Abbott who you will all no doubt know is the wife of our Federal Opposition Leader, Tony Abbott.

We feel very fortunate that Margie has been able to spare some time in her no doubt very busy schedule, being just prior to a Federal Election, to talk to us about Life & Politics.

Her presentation will be for only about 20 minutes and will not be of a political nature.

VALE—Helmut BUSS It is with sadness that I report the passing of Helmut Buss, who was a great friend to our club. Helmut's funeral, held at Macquarie Park Cemetery on Friday May 3rd was very well attended.

Helmut worked with the Rotary Club of Rouse Hill to arrange for a Probus interest meeting on 19th June 2012, which became our first meeting. Members who were at that first meeting of our club will remember how Helmut worked the room, talking to everyone and quickly lining up our first President, Secretary, Treasurer and the rest of our Charter committee. Helmut took the unofficial position of Junior Vice-President on our Charter Committee, to be there and to help steer our club's first steps.

Helmut joined the Rotary Club of Lindfield in 1992 and served his club in many roles including President in 1996/97. He was passionate in his support for the Clean Up Australia program and well remembered for always saying "yes" when asked to help with community service activities. At Rotary District level, Helmut served on the Rotary Australia World Community Service and Rotary Youth Driver Training Program committees, as District Treasurer, Assistant District Governor, Model United Nations Assembly Chairman and finally as Rotary District Probus Coordinator. It was in that final role, that our club members got to know him.

Helmut was awarded a Rotary International Presidential Citation in 2003 and honoured with a Paul Harris Fellow award by the Rotary Club of Roseville Chase, for his untiring community service and furthering the ideals of Rotary.

Helmut was well known for his enthusiasm, his untiring community service and his whacky German style sense of humour. Six weeks before he passed away, he asked his good friend, Past Rotary District Governor Greg Muldoon to delivery the eulogy at his funeral, telling Greg in typical Helmut style "I will write it for you.". PDG Greg did deliver the eulogy, but Helmut did not get time to write it, as his end came too soon.

Helmut was very happy and proud of how well our Club functioned right from the start. Helmut and Judy (whom he always called Emma) joined us on our Harbour Cruise on 20th February last, and they both had a great time. Just three weeks before he passed away, Helmut was delighted to be able to form the Roseville Chase Probus Club, as his last official act.

We will remember Helmut Buss as a good friend, dedicated to Probus. At his funeral I was able to convey our club's sincere condolences to his wife Judy and his family.

QUAKERS INN LUNCH

Friday 17th June

Our members had a fun and enjoyable day at Quakers Inn on Friday 17th May. We had 23 in attendance and a lot of noise and laughter was had by all. We had Anthea and Paula join us; they have just been accepted into our Club and cannot wait until the next outing. I think this has been the most fun luncheon that we have had so far.

The food was excellent as is shown with Peter Sharpe in the photo with his huge Seafood Platter that was only $17. Our seniors enjoyed the food as they got two for the price of one.

See you all at our next meeting on 7th June.

Yours in Probus

Joy Fink

MAY GUEST SPEAKER

At our last General Meeting on Friday 3 May we were addressed by Ellen Mary Wilton who presented a very interesting and informative talk about her experiences as a young teenager in Egypt when her father, a member of the Australian Foreign Service was based in that country.

Having been educated, up until that time, in Canberra, she found herself in a boarding school in Alexandria where only she and another girl were not Muslim.

Since returning to Australia she has resided in Sydney and written a book called “Daughters of Allah” which is a fascinating glimpse through the latticework of a culture normally hidden from Western eyes. This book has been followed by another called “Hysteria at the Wisteria”, a murder mystery set in the world of women’s lawn bowls.

ART GROUP

The next outing/meeting for the Art Group will be Thursday 13th June 2013 when we will travel to the Museum of Contemporary Art:

140 George Street, Sydney (near Overseas Passenger Terminal, Circular Quay).

Meet Yolanda at Rouse Hill Town Centre bus station, Stand 5 at 9:05am for 9:15am departure

Bus number 607X

OR 10:30 - 10:45am at the Museum.

The Museum is on several levels, but there are lifts. Come with an open mind and a sense of humour, because contemporary (modern) art can amaze, confuse or challenge all your ideas about art.

There are plenty of venues for lunch or BYO lunch.

Cheers Yolanda

The missus bought a Paperback, down Shepton Mallet way, I had a look inside her bag; … T’was “Fifty Shades of Grey”. Well I just left her to it, And at ten I went to bed. An hour later she appeared; The sight filled me with dread … In her left she held a rope; And in her right a whip!

She threw them down upon the floor, And then began to strip. Well fifty years or so ago; I might have had a peek; But Mabel hasn’t weathered well; She’s eighty four next week!! Watching Mabel bump and grind; Could not have been much grimmer, And things then went from bad to worse; She toppled off her Zimmer!

She struggled back upon her feet; A couple of minutes later; She put her teeth back in and said: “I am a dominator!!” Now if you knew our Mabel, You’d see just why I spluttered, I’d spent two months in traction For the last complaint I’d uttered.

She stood there nude and naked Bent forward just a bit I went to hold her, sensual like And stood on her left t…..t!

Mabel screamed, her teeth shot out; My God what had I done?! She moaned and groaned then shouted out: “Step on the other one!!” Well readers, I can’t tell no more; About what occurred that day. Suffice to say my jet black hair, Turned fifty shades of grey.

Editor’s Note: This is a special poem attributed to Pam Ayres which is for all of my Probus readers who will admit to having read (or won’t admit to having read) “Fifty Shades of Grey”.

MADAM TUSSAUDS - Revisited After his wonderful contribution last month, Allan Collins has re-visited his visit to Madam Tussauds and penned another interesting and amusing article for us to imagine.

This is one of those “Right Place, Right Time” moments – although I suspect it is a not uncommon occurrence!

Whilst in the Sports hall at M. Tussards, there was a large tourist that just had to be photographed in a F1 race. Now the cockpit of a F1 racer is designed specifically for the designated driver and is a squeeze even then. For anyone else it is positively claustrophobic!

Anyhow, our hero works at it and finally inserts himself in the car. Photo Op over, it was time to get out. After a few failed attempts, he realizes what most of us had already guessed – it is much easier to get in than to get out – and this bloke had all the extraction strategies of a corpse in a casket.

After 5 minutes of watching on, with our wry smiles turning to belly laughs, we decide to move on. We didn’t want to be around if he did get out!

Did he finally get out? Not sure. Maybe the staff keeps a can opener for such occasions? Or at least supply food parcels!

What some people will do to entertain the crowds.

The Jaundiced Eye.

Another note from me: Just because we have celebrated Mother’s Day this month I have decided to include this story.

THE WOMAN

When God created woman he was working late on the 6th day. An angel came by and said: “Why spend so much time on that one?”

And the Lord answered: “Have you seen all the specifications I have to meet to shape her? She must be washable, but not made of plastic, have more than 200 moving parts which all must be replaceable and she must function on all kinds of food, she must be able to embrace several kids at the same time, give a hug that can heal anything from a bruised knee to a broken heart and she must do all this with only two hands”.

The angel was impressed. “Just two hands....impossible!“

And this is the standard model? “Too much work for one day....wait until tomorrow and then complete her“.

“I will not”, said the Lord. “I am so close to completing this creation, which will be the favourite of my heart. She cures herself when sick and she can work 18 hours a day”.

The angel came nearer and touched the woman. “But you have made her so soft, Lord”.

“She is soft", said the Lord, “But I have also made her strong. You can’t imagine what she can endure and overcome.“

“Can she think?" the angel asked.

The Lord answered: “Not only can she think, she can reason and negotiate."

The angel touched the womans cheek....“Lord, it seems this creation is leaking! You have put too many burdens on her.”

“She is not leaking....it’s a tear” the Lord corrected the angel.

“What’s it for?" asked the angel.

And the Lord said: “Tears are her way of expressing grief, her doubts, her love, her loneliness, her suffering and her pride.”

This made a big impression on the angel; “Lord, you are a genius. You thought of everything. The woman is indeed marvellous!"

Indeed she is! Woman has strengths that amazes man. She can handle trouble and carry heavy burdens. She holds happiness, love and opinions. She smiles when feeling like screaming. She sings when she feels like crying, crys when she is happy and laughs when she is afraid. She fights for what she belives in. Stands up against injustice. She doesn’t take “no” for an answer, when she can see a better solution. She gives herself so her family can thrive. She takes her friend to the doctor if she is afraid. Her love is unconditional. She cries when her kids are victorious. She is happy when her friends do well. She is glad when she hears of a birth or a wedding. Her heart is broken when a next of kin or friend dies. But she finds the strength to get on with life. She knows that a kiss and a hug can heal a broken heart.

There is only one thing wrong with her. She forgets what she is worth...

Share this with your lady friends to remind them how fantastic they are....pass it on to males you know. Sometimes they need to be reminded!!!

GOOD FRIENDS ARE LIKE STARS …..

You don’t always see them, but you know they are always there.
