President’s Report

It is with a heavy heart that I sit down to write my report this month as we have all been shocked to learn of the premature passing of one of our most popular members Denise Byrnes.

Denise joined our Club in April 2013, since when she and her husband Garry have been very active members who involved themselves in numerous club activities. It was only just over four months’ ago that we had such a great time in the Snowy Mountains with Denise; Garry taking photographs at each stop. Denise will be long remembered for her wonderful smile and generosity of spirit. Our thoughts are with Garry at this time.

Those members who attended our September meeting will remember the wonderful guest speaker, Deb Hunt, who related stories of her extraordinary life (before and after Australia). Deb made mention of her wonderful wheelchair bound friend Jane who was determined to relocate to France and “find a man”, about whom she had written the book “Dream Wheeler”. Although Deb had a number of books for sale on the day I, being a cheapskate, purchased this book from Amazon for my Kindle and have just fin-ished reading it. What another amazing woman was Jane.

I look forward to catching up with as many members as possible at our October meet-ing.

Les Dudgeon.

OUR FARWELL TO

DENISE BYRNES She was one of the rare ones So effortlessly herself And the world loved her for it

(Atticus)

Denise Robyn Byrnes (nee Smith), was born on 6th December 1948. Her parents and younger sister Marilyn made their home in North Ryde where Denise attended both Primary and Secondary Schools. She attained her Leaving Certificate in 1965 and continued her education at Wollongong Teacher’s Col-lege, graduating in 1969 with her Teacher’s Certificate. Denise had showed an early interest in becom-ing a hairdresser but that wasn’t to be. She loved music and enjoyed both singing and dancing. She was skilled in a range of crafts including sewing and woodwork. Denise commenced her teaching career at Birrong Primary School and her final posting was at Girraween Primary where she filled the role of Deputy Principal. Her passion for teaching was infectious. She was loved by her pupils and well respect-ed by her fellow teachers.

During those years at teachers college she met a young man, Garry Byrnes. The two attended Christian Youth Camps. They were married on 23rd August 1969. With their dressmaking skills, Denise and her mother made all the gowns for the bride and bridesmaids. Initially, Denise and Garry lived at Strathfield but later moved to Burrandong Crescent at Baulkham Hills and this is still their family home.

Denise led a busy life teaching and supporting her two daughters, Talia and Marnie, in their numerous activities. The girls participated in Ballet, Jazz and Gymnastics and Denise spent many hours after work making costumes for their dancing concerts. They were a close family. Christmas was spent rotating between families, and holidays at Long Jetty and Sussex Inlet or Currarong were enjoyed with friends.

In retirement Denise continued this busy life. She was a member of several organisations including Probus and View Club and attended numerous morning teas, lunches and other social functions. In February 2016 she became the proudest grandmother to Ace who brought her much love and joy and no doubt made her life even busier

She and Garry enjoyed many overseas trips including Singapore and holidays in Canada Europe and Mexico. When the family enjoyed a South Pacific cruise earlier this year they had no idea that this would be their last holiday as a family. In May, while on a Probus trip to Jindabyne, Denise experienced severe back pain. Within a week of returning she had been operated on to remove a tumour on her spine. She was eventually diagnosed with a secondary aggressive cancer. After just 17 weeks, she passed away.

During her illness Denise never gave up. She took it in her stride, was in high spirits and prepared for a battle. The life of this humble, caring and passionate person was cut too short. She was a truly beau-tiful person. She was devoted to her husband Garry and her caring for him during his own illness, touched so many.

Her female friends often commented on her immaculate appearance – her beautiful hair, makeup, nails and her radiant smile. We will miss this beautiful lady!

STITCH & CHAT

Stitch & Chat is back—we had a great time away at Uluru.

As we are getting into the warmer months, knitting may be too hot to handle, so think about doing some-thing else. Maybe cross stitch or Christmas decora-tions or just do some colouring in. It’s lots of fun.

Hope to see you on Tuesday 3rd October 10am

EXTERNAL SPEAKER LAST MONTH

INTERNAL SPEAKER LAST MONTH

Last month’s speaker was Bruce McCredie who entertained us with the story of his family’s business McCredie Pottery. The business grew from Bruce’s Aunt’s interest in pottery, which gradually became a full-time business replacing her career as a trained Architect.

Bruce told us of his Grandfather assisting with a shed and kiln at the family property in Epping and together with slides and photos, we saw how the business grew and became a full family endeavour, with Bruce’s father re-training to learn moulding at Tech and how he used this knowledge to produce many moulded decorator items. The talk was complemented with a box full of treasures, salt & pepper shakers, vases, bowls, jugs etc. Genuine McCredie items are clearly marked with the family name, so many us went home and checked our family heir-looms lurking in the cupboard.

It was a very interesting talk. Unfortunately, with the importation of cheap pottery from Japan and the Orient the business ultimately folded but has been remembered in museums as a significant player in the history of the area.

Deb Hunt proved to be a very interesting speaker. Deb is an author of several books but also told us of her very varied working life. The main focus of her talk was idea of romance and love. As a young girl, she grew up with strong expectations of how romance would come along and she would live happily ever after. She wrote her first book, Dream Wheeler, to tell the story of her friend Jane who was paralysed by po-lio, deserted by her husband and had her children taken from her by the state. Jane remained positive and when approaching 60, decided to move to France, renovate a home and garden and then decided to ad-vertise for a male companion to complete her new life.

Deb was motivated to make a change in her life and applied for a job in Broken Hill with the Flying Doctor Service. She read pages from the book written about this time and we found her recollections of an Eng-lish rose fitting into this new environment, to be brutally honest and amusing.

She told of her friendship with a pilot of the service and how this friendship developed into the significant relationship in her life and how the romantic young girl came to realise the huge difference between the romance fantasy and real life.

Getaway to Uluru

On the 5th Sept we woke early to start our first interstate getaway to Uluru. We met up with most travellers for breakfast at the airport. Everyone was punctual and we were joined by 4 people from Meadowbank Probus. The flight was on time and smooth. Arrived in beautiful sunny weather at 13.30. We stayed at Voyagers Desert Gardens Hotel, everything was superb, views of the rock, pool and flora. We started our adventure at 6pm for Sounds of Silence Dinner, having canapes of kangaroo, crocodile and various other delicacies, sparkling and still wines were also consumed, then a short walk on a lone sand dune where we had 360 degree views of the vast landscape in front of Uluru and behind us the were the domes of Kata Tjuta and of course the beautiful sunset. We had a gourmet barbecue buffet of authentic Australian delicacies and desserts and the finest of wines. We were privileged to have an astronomer take us on a tour of the spectacular southern sky.

The next day was another early start with a boxed breakfast. In the coach we sighted the first rays of sunlight shine across the desert plains, stopped for a cuppa and noticed the rock change colour. We were then taken on an easy walk with our tour guide at the base of Uluru, where we were shown the sacred sites where Aboriginal communities lived, caves where the spirits of Mala Tjukurpa are felt in the atmosphere and the coloured paint-ings in the cave, also the water hole. We stopped off at the Cultural Centre, where breakfast was consumed and a cappuccino purchased. We had a few spendthrifts showing off their wares and in the afternoon we started off for a sunset tour of the western horizon. We stopped a few times for walks, one smooth and one very rocky un-der foot, some fit members finished this very strenuous walk and there were no flies to annoy anyone. We stopped off at another viewing area and watched the moon rise next to the rock while we enjoyed canapes and sparkling wines and where a few people purchase some local art. In the evening we enjoyed a 3 Course meal back at our hotel. The weather was cool in the early mornings and evenings and sunny and warm during the day. We were so lucky. On the 7th we were on our way home. We would like to thank Christine, Ian, Bev, Jen-ny, Aileen, John F, Bob, Di, Chris, Dennis, Lyn, Helen, Anthea, Gloria, Maureen, Jen, Joan, John V, Lyn, Dani, Adele, Colin, Yanee, and Jan for joining us. We had fun

EXTERNAL SPEAKER NEXT MONTH

Our October speaker will delve into Traditional Chinese culture.

Our speaker is Christine Hond and her presentation is titled—”Music from 5000 years of Civilisation”

After moving to Australia in 1989, she has worked for both State and Federal governments.

Her cross-cultural marriage, as well as working with people of different cultural backgrounds, has taught her to appreciate

the greatness within different cultures.

She was fascinated with traditional Chinese culture, which was almost lost in Mainland China.

The presentation will outline:

-The origins of Chinese culture and the harmony between humanity, earth and the universe.

-The relationship between music and medicine.

-A look at traditional Chinese instruments.

-How today, this ancient civilisation is being revived by Shen Yun’s music and dance.

Ian Bowden

Speakers Convenor.

Jazz in the Pines– September 17th

We had 27 attend Jazz in the Pines and before the Jazz started, we had the opportunity to look through Rough-ley House. The weather was perfect, our tables were under the pine trees which was beautiful but a little cool. Some moved their chairs into the sun and bopped along to Mike Hallam Hot Six Band.

Joan Leishman requested a song, Lorraine shouted a few with her homemade apple pie.

We all enjoyed the music and thank you to Joan & John and Rotary for making this day a success.

Joy Fink.

North Richmond Cheese & Wine

Such beautiful weather was stowed upon us today when we arrived for our Cheese & Wine Luncheon at Val &

Bert, Barb & Des’ very spacious retirement village where we met at The Hangar.

The main table was covered with cheese, biscuits, dips, chips, nuts etc where we all filled our small plates with our

selected choices, sat at our tables where kids lollies (that’s us) and chips were placed. Once everyone had greeted

each other, Bert announced a mini Olympics. Darts, quoits, mini golf, black ball billiards. There were a lot of hits

and misses, laughter, lots of noise when someone did a great shot, sips of wine. It was so much fun. Then lunch

was served, beef, pork, chicken, salads, potato & rolls, so yummy. Then coffee, tea, cakes, biscuits. Then Bert

announced the winners of the day.

Ladies: Janice-Bronze, Helen-Silver, Irene-Gold.

Men: Barry– Bronze, Dave–Silver, Greg-Gold

Ribbons were placed around their necks and many claps of congratulations to our winners.

A big thank you to Val, Bert, Barb & Des. It was a Cheese & Wine to be remembered and talked about for a long

time.
