President’s report
Welcome everyone to our Club’s October newsletter.
I’ll begin with a request....
If you are unable to attend a meeting, will you please place your apologies to Club membership officer, Joan van den Burgh before the day. [ Emergencies excepted ].
Should you need to leave early from a meeting, please tell Joan before leaving the room.
PSPL has set the parameters, including insurance, under which our Club is obliged to operate. Therefore, we need to have correct and up to date information. Remember, Joan works extremely hard to collate and account for members’ attendance.
I ask all of you to .....please....... work with us on this one.
Thoroughly enjoyed our October meeting, it was colourful and very entertaining.....I don’t think I’ll ever look at a ukulele in the same way again. Our Club has so much talent, with Harry Wotjtczak joining in and strumming along with our guest speakers.
We also welcomed Jennie Eames’ new interest group, Mahjong and Cards. The feedback has been very positive and we’re all grateful for her contribution to our Club.
T here are only two Club meetings left for this calendar year. The November meeting will be run as per normal, with internal and external speakers etc.
However, the December meeting will be more relaxed. We’ll enjoy a special morning tea, with you soon hearing from us as, to what food you can contribute to it. We like to be fairly organised to ensure there is variety and choice on the menu. Allan and Margaret Collins’ superb pate` is definitely one of my favourites.
For our new members, who have never experienced this, I want to give a warning. Santa has been known to drop in and check out who’s been naughty or nice.
My best wishes to all our members who are unwell at this time.
Onwards and upwards
Carpe Diem
Warm regards
Kris

Excursion to the Illawarra Science Centre
We had an early morning departure from Tony and Darinkas place. The bus was waiting and nearly all the seats were full.
Our bus driver Chris (he told us he was born on Christmas day) kept us busy with quizzes and music.
Morning tea was at Stanwell Park in the big sunny reserve near the beach. Then on to Wollongong over the sea cliff bridge. A pleasant drive past several seaside towns.
The Science Innovation Centre is quite impressive. Some members who drove up, joined us there.
First up was a science demonstration which was mainly about liquid nitrogen. I don't know much about that so it was very interesting. Chris (yes another Chris!) was our tour leader for the day. He threw the liquid nitrogen on the carpet and it vanished in a cloud of gas. The carpet was dry! I learned that the nitrogen is -196° A couple more special "tricks" and to top the show off he poured it over his arm. Because it was so quick he didn't get frostbite.
Next up, free time in the big hall with many hands-on experiments. We had lots of fun trying them out. Many of us would have liked to stay a little longer.
Lastly we went into a theatre with an enormous domed ceiling which was a movie screen. Leaning back in our chairs we could see the projected night sky. We learned about constellations and black holes. I never knew there was a starry outline of an emu in The Milky Way! In Dover Heights is a telescope which snaps nonstop pic-tures of the universe which will help scientists map it.
Then lunchtime just up the road at the Illawarra Master Builders Club. A choice of 3 meals which were all yum-my plus dessert. We bought a salad to go with it, a steal for just $2.
The trip home took a bit longer due to an accident on the road but the bus driver put on some nice sixties mu-sic.
Thank you so much Sue for a very informative and enjoyable day, You are doing such a great job!
Also thanks to Tony and Darinka, it's very convenient to park and get the bus from their home.

Evacuation Process Rex Money Meeting Room
The building has alarms and an intercom.
The Rouse Hill Town Centre have their own appointed Evacuation Wardens that take control in any Emergency situation (Not just fires)
We need to highlight the following
• If you hear a Beep Beep Beep tone alarm – Await instructions – do not evacuate (yet)
• There may be an announcement of “False Alarm” or other instruction
• IF there is Whoop Whoop Whoop tone alarm – Evacuate and listen for any instructions
In an emergency we do not use the elevators
We would probably not use the Main stairs (unless instructed to do so).
There are TWO sets of Fire Stairs
Both sets are not far from the Toilet area on our meeting room level (Level 2) – Follow the Green Exit signs
However we can also “short cut” through our Kitchen back door (IF required and safe to do so)
The Evacuation Wardens will then direct us to the appropriate Assembly Area. Currently it is adjacent to the Railway Sta-tion.
It is important that members “sign in” when attending meetings. If you leave the meeting early it is equally important
to notify our Membership Officer or a Committee member who will have you “signed out”
We will use the Attendance sheet for a “roll call” to ensure all attending members are accounted for.
We ask that, if safe to do so, our more able bodied members assist others not so mobile in any emergency.
Ian Bowden
Apologies at Meetings
It is important that members notify their apologies BEFORE the meeting day to our Membership Officer (Joan van den Berg)
This can be preferably by email ([email protected]) or phone (0427 971 945)
It is preferable not to give an apology to any other committee member (who then has to communicate to Joan) – unless a last resort.
Also please avoid giving an apology on behalf of someone verbally at the front table on meeting day as it can be a real pain – only as a last resort
Let’s make Joan’s life a bit easier and follow the above.
We appreciate your understanding
Ian Bowden

LAST MONTHS INTERNAL SPEAKER
Harry introduced our Internal Speaker who was Dennis Hall. Dennis told us of meeting Lyn when they were both still at High School ( but not the same one) They married in 1969 and had 4 children, each of who have gone on to have 3 children each. So the Hall clan is quite large when they all get together for family celebrations.
Lyn and Dennis decided to celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary with a trip to South Australia. They en-joyed the sights of Adelaide and then proceeded on to Kangaroo Island. Tourism is the main income strain on the island these days but some farmers have transformed their farming businesses to cater for the tourism in-dustry—such as setting up Eucalyptus Oil farm and selling products directly at the farm gate.
Dennis showed photos of the very remarkable Remarkables—an area of extreme beauty on the coastline of the island.
Dennis & Lyn then joined the Murray Princess at Mannum for a cruise along the mighty Murray, with the large paddle wheel turning, they cruised past majestic cliffs and called into towns along the way. The boat docked every night along the river and guests enjoyed good food and entertainment, as well as great hospitality from all the staff on board.
They disembarked at Blanchetown—the trip over it was back to reality. A very fitting way to celebrate such an important milestone. We congratulate them on this occasion and thank Dennis for such an entertaining talk.

HAPPY NEW YEAR Hi Members Yes I know - It is only October but the (Probus) year can be over before you know it. As Vice President, I am looking forward to being President next year – unless there is a coup! In case you have not gathered already, I am a person who likes to be organised. At our recent October committee meeting, we discussed who will renominate for Committee next year. FYI, The Probus year starts in March 2020. It might sound a long way off, but we only have two meetings (Nov and Dec) before Nominations will be called. We will be sending out Official Nomination forms later in January to be completed and handed in at out February meeting (Fri 7th Feb). Please note, there is no Club meeting in January 2020. We hold our AGM and “Elections” at our March meeting (Fri 6th March) I am asking that any interested members, start thinking about either nominating themselves or another member. All positions are open for nomination. (Except President and Ex Officio). The positions for election are Vice President (President Elect), Secretary, Treasurer, Membership Officer, Speak-ers Convenor, Outings and Events Officer, Public Officer, Newsletter Editor. A number of your existing committee have indicated their intention to stand again. However, all positions are available for a member nomination. There is nothing wrong in having an election for a committee position. If we have more than one nominee for a position, a silent ballot from all members at the AGM will be held, with the successful candidate announced at its completion. We have most positions covered with one nomination, The exceptions are those of the Vice President and Secre-tary positions. Also our Newsletter Editor (Chris Gardiner) has indicated that, if required, she will continue in 2020. However, ideally we are looking for a new Editor. This position gives you free rein to use your creative flair and talents. It can also be seen as something of a hobby to fill in your spare time. If interested, maybe you would like to talk to either Chris or myself. If you are interested in any of the above, just give me a call or speak to me at a meeting or function. Otherwise, please feel free to speak to any other Committee member. You might even find me approaching you – maybe a scary thought – but please don’t run away if I am approach-ing! In the past, our Club has always been fortunate to have had great Committee members and Activity Co-ordinators. Long may it continue. EDINBURGH TATTOO
What a spectacular event we witnessed at ANZ Stadium on 17th October. We travelled in our own bus which certainly is the way to go, hassle free and convenient. We were entertained by bands from the Queens Guard, Australian services, France, New Zealand and other exotic places.
Each band put on an amazing display of precision and musicality, mixed with humour and athleticism. Dozens of dancers entertained us with Scottish folk dancing and an amazing can-can during the French band’s contribution. The finale was a sight to behold, with the whole cast coming together in the arena to perform in front of a replica of Edinburgh Castle. As per tradition, a sole piper stood on top of the Castle, to perform the closing piece.
Thankyou to Kerrie Sims for organising this amazing night. What a way to say farewell to your Theatre Co-Ordinator Role.

GUEST SPEAKER LAST MONTH
Harry introduced us to Arthur Ongley from the Parramatta and Hills Ukelele Network. Arthur gave us the back-ground to his passion for the ukelele , meaning “jumping flea” after Hawaiins were introduced to the smaller ver-sion of a guitar by visiting Spanish Sailors.
Arthur, accompanied by his wife Denise, entertained us with well known songs such as the Aloha song and we all sang along. He told us that the ukelele was gleefully adopted by the Hawaiins, who developed their own style of music. The ukelele enjoyed great popularity from early 1900’s but the advent of Rock and Roll saw the ukelele became öld fashioned” and the final nail in the ukelele coffin came when Tiny Tim released his one hit wonder “Tip Toe through the Tulips”
However, the uke is back, with at least 3 clubs in Sydney and hundreds across the country and it is also popular with Grey Nomads who cross the country and get together for a sing along around the campfire.
Harry thanked Arthur and Denise for their interesting and entertaining presentation. Harry also contributed as he strummed along with Arthur and Denise.
