President’s report

Welcome everyone to our Club’s November newsletter.

This year is so quickly coming to a close. There’s only one more Club meeting left for this calendar year.

As I mentioned last month, the December meeting will be more relaxed. There won’t be too many formalities, before we enjoy our sumptuous Christmas morning tea.

Our monthly Club meetings will begin again on Friday, February 7th, 2020 at 10 am in the Rex Money room as per usual. We have again secured this venue for our use next year.

I had a quick look at the Club Calendar for November on our website. There are still quite a few activities to en-joy especially on the Thursday 21st. For those who play cards, you’ll find two sessions, one in morning and one in the afternoon.

Plus, in the evening, there’s the Christmas theme Cheese and Wine night at Joy and Kerry Fink’s home. For those of you who don’t know, Kerry is renowned for his Christmas decorations. They’re really something to be-hold.

We’ll finish off the month with our Christmas lunch at Allegro. It’s always a good outing and lots of fun. There’s always plenty to eat and there’s always lots of laughter too.

On a more serious side, I’ve been listening to the radio all day about the dreadful bush fires. I am in awe of those, who so selflessly risk their own lives, to protect the lives and property of others. They are true heroes.

I send my best wishes to all our members who are unwell at this time.

Onwards and upwards

Carpe Diem

Warm regards

Kris

BIG DAY OUT CRUISE

On the last day of October 47 Club members braved the twin perils of a thick smoke haze and a rogue Metro train to (finally!) board the Sydney Harbour Rhythmboat at the Casino Wharf in Pyrmont for a three hour 'Bingo on the Boat' cruise around Sydney Harbour.

The difficulties of actually getting to the location were quickly forgotten with a welcome of morning tea/coffee and biscuits as the boat moved away from the quay to the sounds of music from the boat's loudspeakers. Enter-tainment would take the form of three bingo games and a trivia quiz, with a two course lunch being served mid-way through the cruise.

Bingo winners were Cathy Rooke, Jenise McReadie, Lyn Hayhow, Dawn Bowden and Gloria McInnes (twice!).

For the trivia quiz the participants were divided into nine teams, each of which picked its own name. Although no prizes were given for originality the pick had to be the team of 'Dirty Dawn's Delights' - a name occasioning much comment and not a little speculation as to its implications...

The quiz itself was won by the aptly named 'All Stars' comprising Kerrie and Joy Fink, Joan Leishman and the ubiquitous Gloria McInnes.

In recognition of her (highly questionable) 42nd birthday Irene Johnston was presented with a bag of (slightly questionable) goodies.

A very good lunch rounded off a most enjoyable fun day out on the Harbour!

FREE MONEY - $200

Have you got your $200?

You may already be aware of this – but just in case you are not.

Senior Health Care Card holders are entitled to a once a year Energy rebate of $200 from the NSW Gov-ernment. That is if you are a home owner and have electricity.

I was aware earlier in the year that it was coming but forgot about it until a member reminded me about it at a function in October. I applied and received the $200 into our account within a week!!

If you are not aware of the scheme or have forgotten about it – Give it a go.

It is also a yearly rebate so you can do it all again after 1st July each year.

The NSW Energy Rebate is available to “eligible” households of Seniors having the Seniors Health Care Card. I assume a number of us will have? Pensioners have a separate scheme.

It is easiest to apply on line, although there is a “paper” application process available.

You need to have a log in to Service NSW. This is the site that you can use to pay your Drivers Licence and Registration on line. If you do not have a log in it is easy to register and get one.

Just go to https://www.service.nsw.gov.au

Once you have registered and have a log in you go to “Concessions, Rebates and Assistance” Then go to the box marked “Apply for Seniors Energy Rebate” and follow the prompts.

You will need your Seniors Card for details. You need your CRN number and Expiry date You will need your Electricity bill to refer to. It needs to contain same name (or Initials) as the Seniors Card.

You need to enter the NMI (Meter) number. It can be hard to find but will be there. You should have already submitted in the registration process a nominated bank account for the funds to be

paid into.

If you cannot do this, maybe go to a Service NSW Office and I am sure they can assist. Remember to take a copy of your Electricity account with you. They may also be able to assist in giving you a Service NSW account / registration (This is my assumption). There is a NSW Service Office in the HUB Home Maker Centre (South Build-ing) in Victoria Avenue Castle Hill.

Fill it in – wait about a week - $200 is yours – Don’t spend it all at once. Regards and Good Luck Ian Bowden

CHEESE AND WINE NIGHTS

Volunteers for 2020 needed— We have interested hosts for the first half of next year but if you would like to nominate to host a soiree later in the year please contact Jenise & Bruce

LAST MONTHS INTERNAL SPEAKER

JOHN ARMSTRONG

John presented a humorous talk about “the 57 wonderful years together” with wife Lyn.

The adventure began in 1962 when they met at a boy scout function. We heard about them winning gold in the state titles for Latin American dance, many hours spent in the local phone box (just John!), their 1969 wedding and their four boys starting in 1972. After losing his job after 32 years in the rag trade, John joined Corrective Services and was there for 20 years.

In 2009 They celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary at Camden Valley Inn where John surprised Lyn with early morning hot air ballooning and a champagne breakfast. In 2016 the whole family of 17 celebrated John’s 70th birthday with a week’s holiday to Plantation Island Fiji. In 2019 they celebrated Lyn’s 70th with the 17 strong “Crazy Bunch” at Fitzroy Island Queensland for a week.

John and Lyn will finish off the year with some of the family on a Xmas cruise to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.

What a great way to kick off the festive season, wonderful fellowship, lots of fun & laughter, everyone really getting into the Christmas spirit. Such a beautiful night, the weather was kind to us, and the food amazing. Big Thank You to Joy & Kerry.

GUEST SPEAKER LAST MONTH

GRAHAM SIMS talking on FUNNY DUNNIES

(When You Gotta Go You Gotta Go!).

Graham had a 40 year career in education specialising in languages. He presented a list of 29 vastly different talking topics to Harry who settled on the Funny Dunnies theme.

Everyone was kept enthralled and in fits of laughter as we learned about the dunny history, numerous names for them, songs, poems, sayings, pictures of country dunnies. We heard stories about the dunny man at Christmas, toilet paper preferences, caravan toilets, overseas toilets (esp. India and Copenhagen), bidets, Town Hall toilets and self-cleaning toilets.

On looking around the room some members were close to tears from laughing. It is a funny thing about travelling when you may not recall the name of a Museum or Palace but details of encounters in dunnies (or bathrooms as the Americans say) always stay entrenched in the grey matter.

THEATRE GROUP REPORT

“BILLY ELLIOT”

On 30th October a bevy of beauties – and a few thorns between the roses – congregated at The Lyric Theatre to see the long awaited performance of “Billy Elliot”.

After a less than relaxing, but very enlightening – trip on the Light Rail – it was not very long before quite a number of us managed to find some tables from which to consume our fish and chips, sushi, coffee and other delights. Some even went in search of ice creams with which to finish off.

You may think this is a long and unnecessary “foreword”, however as I was not able to find anyone who “really” enjoyed the performance I can’t wax lyrical about it. Perhaps the people around me were those who were diffi-cult to please!?!?!?!? Our main criticism was the very loud and extremely “screechy” voices with strong Geordie accents which we simple Aussies found more than a little difficult to understand. Although we were expecting strong language, we were also quite surprised by how much, which seemed not to significantly contribute to the story.

The second half was our preference and the performance of young Billy exceptional.

Having written a “fairly” negative report I know that we all had a great day out and enjoyed the day, notwith-standing Norrie missing his golf.
