It's been used to create homes, workplaces, places of worship and buildings of industry for countless centuries, and will doubtless be used for many years to come. Here we present to you some of the most amazing things ever built with brick! 3. www.allbrickandstone.com The Largest Brick Building in the World: Albi Cathedral Properly called the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Cecilia, this stunning building in southern France was first built as a fortress in 1287 and was under construction for nearly 200 years until its completion in 1480! Despite its age, it's thought to be the largest brick building in the world, rising to 78 metres in height, with a length of 113.5 metres and a width of 35 metres. It is also designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. 4. www.allbrickandstone.com Tallest Brick Building in the World: The Chrysler Building Strictly speaking, this is the largest brick building with a steel skeleton inside; this gives it the structural integrity it needs to support its sheer weight. Rising to 282 metres to the top of the roof and 319 metres to the very top of the spire, it's undoubtedly an integral part of the New York skyline. The Chrysler Building was completed in 1930 and held the title of tallest building in the world for a mere eleven months until the Empire State Building surpassed it. 3,826,000 bricks were manually laid to create the non-loadbearing walls of the structure, and thanks to its spire it was the first man-made structure to stand taller than a thousand feet (305 metres). 5. www.allbrickandstone.com Tallest Brick Structure in the World: The Anaconda Smelter Stack To America now; Montana, to be precise. Standing at 178.3m high, this enormous chimney is the largest brickwork structure in the world, and possibly the largest free standing masonry structure too. Although the furnaces which once vented fumes through the stack are long gone, the chimney remains thanks to a campaign by locals, and is now at the centre of the Anaconda Smoke Stack State Park. 6. www.allbrickandstone.com Tallest Brick Tower in the World: St Martin's Church, Landshut The tallest brick tower in the world without any steel structural support, rising to a height of 130.6 metres. Construction of the church took 110 years and half of that time was spent just on building the tower. It was finally completed and designated as a place of worship in the year 1500. 7. www.allbrickandstone.com Largest Brick Bridge in the World: Gltzsch Viaduct, Germany This railway bridge, which carries two lines across the valley of the Gltzsch River, was constructed between 1846 and 1851. It's the largest brick-built bridge in the world, with a total length of 574 metres, a height of 78 metres, and a width varying between 9 metres at the top and 23 metres at the foot. At the time of its inauguration, it was also the tallest bridge in the world. To produce the 26,021,000 bricks used in the bridge, nearly 20 brickyards along the line worked to produce 50,000 bricks a day. 8. www.allbrickandstone.com The Most Beautiful Buildings in the World Naturally, when it comes to beauty, there is a certain amount of personal opinion involved.
