Somebody posted a picture of me on Facebook. It was one of those school pictures that I would

rather had been left in a musty box of memories. But there it was on my wall for everyone to see. I am the ugly duckling in the middle, and, for unexplained reasons, I have chopped my fringe really short. I look positively uncomfortable in my bones.

What became clear to me, as I thought about my relationship to that girl in the picture, is the power of cosmetics. The ability of the right red lipstick to transform a gawky girl into a confident, happy woman.
