I hope you find the NAPLAN Literacy and Numeracy kits useful in supporting your child’s preparation for NAPLAN from home. As we lead up to the NAPLAN assessments, it would be helpful to familiarise yourself with the Writing criteria and Reciprocal Numeracy strategies to help understand how your child approaches their Writing, Numeracy, Reading, Comprehension and Language Conventions tasks. The mathematical language you use at home with your children, as well as the writing feedback you give your child is crucial to their success in the NAPLAN assessments. The following guide is a suggestion to help prepare your child for the Maths and Literacy NAPLAN assessment components: Maths 1. Parents read the NAPLAN Maths Pack and become familiar with the Reciprocal Numeracy and language strategies to supervise their child. 2. Go through the 2010 Numeracy assessment with your child – or if you have time, let them sit the test for practice. Here is a simple guide to supporting your child using the 5 stages in Reciprocal Numeracy: 1. Reading: Read the question to yourself and let me know if you want help with any word 2. Comprehension: Can you tell me what the question is asking you to find out? 3. Transformation: What could you do to get the answer? 4. Process Skills: Try doing it and as you are doing it tell me what you are thinking? 5. Encoding: Now write down your answer English 1. Parents read the NAPLAN Literacy Resource material. 2. Use the Parent and Student Writing Rubrics (based on the NAPLAN criteria) whenever your child writes. This will help both of you to reinforce the expectations for writing. 3. Go through the 2010 Writing assessment with your child – or if you have time, let them sit the test for practice. It is also helpful to remind your child to use neat handwriting and to be aware of ‘timing’ or ‘pacing’ during the assessments.
