BECAUSE EVERY CHILD NEEDS a place to play, the Sewanee Civic Association raised funds to reinvent the Elliott Park playground. Elliott Park is the central playground & meeting place for families; an outdoor space in which to connect.

Elliott Park is located just off University Avenue near the Book & Supply Store, the Chapel & the center of the Uni-versity campus. It offers a playground for many ages of children, provides a place for newcomers to meet others, & fosters a sense of community.

In 2012, Emily Puckette, a community & faculty member living near the park, began discussions with the Univer-sity about playgrounds. The SCA was asked to help engage the larger com-munity in discussions about the state of parks & play grounds throughout the community. The SCA created a Parks Committee.

The Parks Committee conducted a community wide survey in Septem-ber 2013 to gather input about plans to construct a community park & playground. Approximately 150 com-munity members responded. Of the five proposed sites—Elliott Park, the Sewanee Community Center, Wood-lands, the Ball Park, & St. Mark’s Cen-ter—two-thirds of those responding named Elliott Park as their first choice to be revitalized.

Originally designated in 1870, Elliott Park has a his-tory of community sup-port with much of its play-ground equipment built by the community or pur-chased with donations. A swing set, chin up bars, wooden step structure, and sand box (now removed) were installed under the leadership of Sandy Baird and Yolande Gottfried in the 1980s. In 1998, commu-nity member Dana Lesesne spearheaded the addition of a pirate ship constructed by the Sewanee chapter of Phi Gamma Delta (Fiji), with support from various sources including the Kaj Krogstad Memorial Fund.In 2012, when several wooden play elements were in disrepair, the ship, cabin, play automobile, and picnic table were re-moved from Elliott Park leaving behind little more than an aging swing set in what was once a vibrant place for the children to play.

From the survey results, the most frequently suggested equipment for a park was a climbing structure, swings, & a slide.

The Sewanee Civic Association began the next chapter of this commu-nity-supported park through a designated fund with the Sewanee Com-munity Chest, our 501 (c) 3 organization in June 2015. The For the Parks project raised more than $62,000 to reinvent Elliott Park. This included grants, bake sales, cash from the Angel Fest event, 50 donations from Go-FundMe, & 157 individual donations. The SCA entered into an MOU with the University of the South in September 2015. Groundbreaking began in October 2015. The project was completed & the park opened on No-vember 21, 2015 after more than 70 community members joined in the mulch spreading event.

Children need a place to play & people need a place to gather. The For the Parks project will continue to benefit the whole community & our many visitors by reminding us that Sewanee is not only a place where families live, but is a place where families are valued.

Because every child needs a place to play, the community joined this ef-fort to reinvent this community park with donations of time & money. Together, we strengthened our community. We thank you,

Construction began by removing the swing set and then leveling the site.

This was what was left of a once vibrant place to play and gather.

The stone wall was erected, delineating the playground pad.
