WEEK 1:

WEEK 2:

WEEK 4:The first step to kick start your skincare journey is to see a dermatologist. While your friends and fam-ily are all in to lend their advice, it’s always the best option to go see a professional and understand your skin type to work ahead.

Let’s continue with the basics – stop touching your face! Keep reminding yourself to get those pesky fin-gers down and away from your face. Twice a week, wash your pillowcases and clean your phone screen preferably daily. All those bacteria smear around your cheek and spread to your face, causing major breakouts and acne you can easily avoid if you fol-low this hygiene.

For the remaining days, bring focus to your lifestyle. Limit your alcohol intake and detox your system with at least eight to ten glasses of water everyday. Include more green leafy vegetables and fruits to your diet, and cut back on sugar and dairy the most. Your skin and body both will be thankful.

WEEK 3:Clean your makeup brushes – it’s one of the most overlooked tasks but makes a humongous difference to your skin’s condition. Also keep in check what beauty products cause you to breakout. Maybe it’s time for some cleaning there as well. Along with these, exfoliate and use a facemask twice or thrice a week. You’ll find your skin being able to breathe, look, and feel fresher.

WEEK 1:

WEEK 2:

WEEK 3:

WEEK 4:

Before you set out to get fit, have a goal and plan strategies to stick to it. Include days you’d be miss-ing, days you’d be doing a little extra. Go in detail so you won’t have to feel jammed once you’re at it. As far as exercising goes, experiment. Try Tabata, Pi-lates, Muay Thai, boxing, or yoga. Find what inter-ests you and keeps you motivated.

Choose your plate wisely. The first step to get a bet-ter body is to feed it better food. Avoid processed, salty, fried, and sugary foods. Alternatively, include more fruits, vegetables, nuts, and set fixed timings for your meals. Start paying attention to how your body reacts to different things you consume.

Say goodbye to being a night owl. However much you get done without sleep, your body will eventu-ally crash and unveil the exhaustion on itself. No matter the work timings for you, get at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep everyday. Besides, try incorporating meditation or yoga in your routine. Not only will it help tone your body but also calm you emotionally and spiritually.

Start walking – literally. Use the stairs, travel by feet, choose to stand rather than sit, dance, walk in the park for 30 minutes. By simply increasing your steps taken you’re losing not only weight but also clear-ing the sedentary out of your system. According to experts, walking 10,000 steps a day is best for losing weight but that being a lot for beginners, you could start with a mere 100 steps and then go up from there.

Meditation will definitely calm your mind from the everyday struggles of our lives and help findinner peace. There can be nothing more reward-ing than getting rid of all negativity and stress.

As the popular idiom says, “A picture is worth a thousand words”. Create memories with pho-tography, record and share with your family and friends on social media. In today’s time, one might not invest in high-end DSLR’s as modern smartphones can fulfil the task of any DSLR with panoramic and portraits modes. Irrespec-tive of the smartphone brand, it is a guarantee that you will have amazing photos only if you aim for it.

We all have bad days, days that make us down, lethargic and make us wonder this day never happened. To come out of that zone, Zumba works perfectly well. The positive ambience, music and a chance to interact with strangers make this an activity worth trying. This Latin-inspired dance form is primarily for weight management, body toning etc to give you an adrenaline push.

I call masseuse at home, there is this lady who comes at home as I don’t like taking massage for only an hour, I need it for 1 and a half or 2 hours, so she comes home and gives me a deep tissue massage.

When people are on a diet and exercise, holiday becomes a reason for them to eat whatever they want to eat but I have been very lucky, I eat anything and everything holiday or no holiday.

Travel essentials have to be the basic things

One place I would like to visit again is Kuwait because that is the place where I was born and I haven’t been to Kuwait since many years so I would definitely want to visit again.

I want to travel the world but before that I also want to see many places in my country because I feel India has so many beautiful places like Kerala and many more places in the south. I have been to Kashmir but I still want to explore Kashmir.

I don’t have a specific cheat meal because as I mentioned I eat everything but then I eat in control. I eat in portions and that works for me.

I don’t workout but I dance when I am on a holiday and I don’t really think about fitness as much on a holiday, I just have fun.

Favourite travel buddy has to be my mother as I recently travelled with her to London and she is very easy going, as she was chilling on her own when I was shooting. She has explored London more than I have.

Recently, I got back from London and I’m in love London. So abroad is London and in India, still have to explore a lot many places, though I love Mumbai.

When I’m travelling I like to dress up but at the same time I want to be very comfortable also, so I dress up in something very sleek and stylish and at the same time comfort is very important. So, it all depends on where I’m travelling, like I was in UK it was cold, so I used to dress up accordingly, if I’m in Goa I’ll dress up accordingly.

Holistic is where you take medication as a whole. Everything in your body is connected, from your kid-neys to your heart. You connect and you address the cause. The medicine is not something we’re against; it’s not alternative it’s integrated. The doctor gives you medicine to treat the symptoms and we diagnose the true cause. So holistic is 360 degrees – it’s your environment, it’s work. If you’re depressed due to work do you need an antidepressant or do you need to change your work? That’s what we focus on. Ho-listic is working with the cause and its aspects.

All diseases are bad. India is the diabetic capital of the world, second is cardiovascular and third is cancer. So sickness is sickness. People’s immune system is really weak today since they’re sleep-deprived, they’re eating junk food, and things like that. You can’t have cancer if your body’s immune system is strong. So when we look at cancer, our first necessity is to heal the immune system of the patient. The patient may undergo chemo and the side affects of chemo are very harsh, so we take responsibility for boosting the im-mune system naturally where the patient doesn’t get sicker and provide vitamins and minerals in their best form. Our approach towards cancer is also holistic. We focus on nutrition, movement, exercise, getting quality sleep, and the doctor of course does what he has to do

It’s very simple – I don’t give opinions. I talk about facts and experiences. Everybody already has opin-ions. It’s full of fad. So the reason why I do social media is because people don’t even understand the basics. They’re acidic or constipated and they think it’s something they have to live with. They’re not even doing anything about it. So one day I decided to just do a video and share it. That was my first video that I shared with the people because the line has to get shorter at some point. Of course, we come up with cases we really can’t control but simple things don’t require you to reach a stage with a serious disease. Whenever I see patients wake up in the morning and whatever it is I learn from them, I share that with the public so that they don’t make the same mistakes. I don’t consider myself as an influencer, I’m not here to make an audience I’m here to share information. My information is all medically and nutritionally backed because we’re a qualified team, and a lot of stuff we talk about isn’t new stuff.

We’re trying to get people back to their roots. We have enough medicines and they’re not helping any more. People are getting sicker and sicker. When you bring in lifestyle, you have patients who are off medicines completely but they’ve made lifestyle changes, they’ve put effort. Lifestyle is free, it’s not expensive, you just need to have discipline and consistency. That’s why we don’t talk about supplements or new stuff because there’s already so much of that and it’s not really going in the right way. I talk about bringing lifestyle changes, it’s a very simple mantra.

You are helping a lot of cancer patients with your approach. How does this work? And why do you think cancer is so com-mon these days?

You are very active digitally. How do you think connecting with your audi-ence on social media will elevate wellness amongst everyone when there is so much information floating around?

A lot of people are physically fit but they’re emotion-ally and mentally depressed. They’re not well. Your wellness is everything – physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and intellectual.

These are the five steps you need to be well. Wellness is also your environment, your nature, your sur-roundings, the kind of relationship you have with your bosses. Most people go to the doctor and they do what they have to but we’re taking it a step further. We want people to heal now and not just treat it with medication.

There are four points. You need to eat the right food and get balanced nutrition. It’s right quality and right quantity, no fads. Whatever your body needs is what you should give it. Second, quality sleep is the most important thing. Third, it’s your emotional health. That’s the biggest cause of most diseases – distress, resentment, guilt, divorces, family fights. Fourth is exercise.

Is there a certain age when one should plan for his/her wellness? And what does the word wellness actually mean?

Human body is the most sophisticated machine. What kind of upkeep is required to keep it functioning at its optimum?

We have programs for wellness as well as for cancer. For our wellness programs, people could come to us with diseases or to prevent diseases. A lot of people come to us today to prevent diseases. They don’t want to get sick but they don’t know what they’re doing wrong in their lifestyles so we help access them, put them on our program, teach them. Our programs are very educative where we assign our patients with psychologists, nutritionists – with anyone that’s need-ed to boost your health. They access you where your gaps are and they fill it, be it nutrition or lifestyle changes. Then we have our cancer programs where we handle different cancers depending on the stage and on the chemo side affects. There’s preventive and there’s treatment also.

What are the different programs that you offer?

Kids are active, it’s the parents that give them gadgets. All that TV and phone gets more exciting than exercise. When we adults can’t manage ourselves since we’re watching Netflix all the time, kids do get easily carried away. I think it’s purely on the parents. And I think the biggest lie are these motivational videos when in reality it all starts from yourself. You can watch all the motiva-tion videos in the world but it’s always self-work. You have to be self-motivated that comes from how strongly you respect your body and your health. There are mil-lions of motivational videos on the net but what differ-ence does it make if people don’t integrate, have disci-pline or consistency? Self motivation has to come from within. Period.

If you take our staple food, you weren’t sick when you were growing up and your parents used to feed it, if you didn’t have a problem then why do you have a problem now? I think it’s the people’s mentality that brings the biggest change to your diet. We just need to change our mindset. How could you follow the same diet as your friend just because she lost 5 kilos? You have a different body, a completely different life, certain foods will suit you and some will not. We have gyms, organic food, supplements, everything! But those are not the things required. We just have to change our lifestyles.

Intermittent fasting has also become a fad by people but it always existed within religions and across the world. People ate lesser than we do today. They would stop eating at sunset and wake up at sunrise to give normal gaps between meals. What happens is your body gets rest, it detoxifies, you lose a little weight, your skin starts getting better. Today people think it’s okay to party late and do intermittent fasting for 16-18-20 hours. Your body doesn’t need all that. Intermittent fasting is a great thing if you do it the right way.

Everything starts with belief and faith. You don’t be-lieve you can heal from cancer; it’s not going to hap-pen. If you’re going to gym for one hour, keep faith that just an hour is going to help you lose weight. Most people are stressed about their actions and that’s what brings them anxiety. In any religion you pray, faith and belief and then surrender. No one surren-ders because they don’t have faith and belief. Without faith nothing’s going to work.

Exercise is one thing that everyone wants to do but only a few can do it regularly. How to keep oneself motivated and do you think it would be better if we inculcate the habit of exercising in our kids at a very young age?

There are a lot of diets that are fashionable today. Is it possible to stay lean and fit eat-ing Indian food? Should one diet at all?

What is intermittent fasting?

Belief and faith. What do these words mean to a wellness enthusiast?

First of all, take care of your heart, mind, and spirit, and of course the body will follow. Because there has to be a balance all the time between all these aspects of your life. I eat a lot of vegetables and I try to avoid meat. And I make sure to drink a lot of water as it is really important.

Wellness means to me being well- mentally, physi-cally, and emotionally. If one is unbalanced, then it will create a difficulty in following a certain disci-pline.

There are no secrets. I drink a lot of water, alkaline water as much as possible. I drink warm water with lemon, vinegar, and cider apple on an empty stom-ach. Eating healthy food especially, salads.

Bali. I had really good massages there.

There is a program on YouTube which gives you 8 minutes of arm routine, leg routine, etc. They are short and intense programs which can be even done at home without a trainer.

My kickboxing experience was lovely. I fell in love with it. I have found a way of avoiding physical ef-fort and actually enjoy it. It’s so challenging that you have to obtain that perfect movement and you have a goal there. I have found the best way of doing cardio and train my muscles, with kickboxing.

There will be some shows, some songs, music vid-eos, and a movie where I am a secret agent. I enjoyed playing that role and loved the experience of per-forming action scenes.

Desserts! I even eat them before my meal my to fill up with something that I really love.

Wellness means staying well, staying happy in your mind. It is about loving your body and a natural feel-ing that will come the moment you start respecting and loving your body. My fitness mantra is to keep a very positive mindset. I believe in three words- I Love Me. If you fall in love with yourself, you don’t need anything else in life. And that is what I practice and preach every single day.

Wellness to me starts from the mind. If you have a happy state of mind, you are going to be well in your mind, body, and soul.

I eat clean. I eat well. I don’t hesitate in eating food. I am a big foodie, being a Punjabi and also have a sweet tooth. So, I don’t deny myself from anything, but I do watch what I eat - quantity and quality.

Thailand. It is easy on the pocket, easy to reach, the food is excellent, you feel relaxed and come back completely reju-venated.

Dubai, because I am there every week for work. It is a cos-mopolitan city and there is everything happening out there and absolutely love it. If I have the leisure of time, then it has to be London. But, if I have to relax, then it is Thailand.

It has to be some dessert! Something chocolaty, or something from Indian sweets.

Start being positive. Eliminate the negativity from your life. Start taking everything positively whether it is your work-out, your food, your work, your mind, relationship with yourself or with your world. It is not only a fitness tip but for everything in your life.

My fitness regime starts early in the morning. It starts with spending time with myself. I call it the I-hour. I spend one hour with myself in which I visualize and manifest my day and what future I want ahead of me. Besides that, I do Pilates, and once in a while, I do yoga. I keep a positive mindset all throughout the day as it adds a lot to your mental and physical fitness.

I usually exercise in the morning for only half an hour. It can be yoga, running, stretching, but some-thing that I can do the next day without feeling tired.

If you are balanced in your mind, body, and soul, that is what wellness is. If one thing is out of propor-tion, then you are not well. It can be tension that is building up, body accumulating toxins, or even con-suming unhealthy food.

It started when I studied about weight loss and did my Fellowship in Obesity Medicine and Clinical Nu-trition, I realized that weight loss is the easiest thing you can achieve by just keeping yourself balanced and focusing on prolong goals.

I never go overboard as I eat everything in modera-tion. I have recently converted myself in to a vegetar-ian, and I feel great.

“You may already follow a strict natural skin-care routine, but it may have fallen by the way-side a bit over the holidays. Late nights, travel and rich food all take their toll on your skin, and while you may be feeling rested internal-ly, externally your skin may be looking a little dull,” says Sol Malik, President, LuxaDerme.

“Before you dive into applying your various lotions and potions, the next step in your rou-tine is to hydrate your skin. Using products that are rich in Red Ginseng, Sea Kelp and Green Tea help brighten tone and smoothen your skin in less than 30 minutes.”

“Begin your day with warm lemon water to energize your body and keep consuming enough water throughout the day to help your liver and kidneys filter out the toxins,” adds Aishwarya Sawarna Nir, Founder, Global Beauty Secrets.

“When we choose food groups that are closer to nature, the raw-natural resources, we are pre-serving our green system and also building vita-min-mineral storehouse in our body. A well-illus-trated example includes our choice of choosing an apple over apple cheese pudding. It had al-ways encouraged me to learn the science behind the food and how it can be therapeutically used to make healthier bodies and this is essential post a holiday too,” says nutritionist Heena A. Kukre-ja, Founder, Health Essential.

Janmejay Shekhawat, Physiotherapist & Chiro-practor, Reset Bangalore, says, “The best way to do this is to get 7-8 hours of good sleep and wake up to your time zone. To get the best sleep, do some gentle stretching on your back before going to sleep. You can do gentle hip stretching while lying down on your back, knee to chest, lower back rotation to right and left side and sit in va-jrasana to do deep breathing exercises. This will help relax your muscles and spine and help you get a good, deep and sound sleep.”

It will take you 2-3 days to adjust to your daily routine. You must include other fluids too to keep up the mineral intake, like buttermilk, alkaline water and lime water. It is recommended to stick to a light fluid diet for a few days before you jump to your regular diet. Fresh cut fruits and green salads should be your best friends for the first week.”

Nadia Issadeen, Marketing Communications Manager, Movenpick Hotel Colombo states, “To feel refreshed one should get more sleep. A nice warm mug of almond milk and saffron also help to sleep better.”

Winter BlueS

the

How many of us couldn’t worry more about winter? Chances are, it’s not you but your body speaking for you.

Termed ‘winter blues’ or when extreme, “Seasonal Affective Disorder” (SAD), it’s a sudden change or depression that occurs in the body due to changes in season. It’s usu-ally during the fall, worsens mid-winter, and finally fades during spring. You find yourself fatigued than the usual, wanting to lie down all the time, losing appetite or not eating at the right times; all these lean towards seasonal depression symptoms.

The precise cause for SAD is yet unknown, however it is believed it could be the avid lack of sunlight. Our body is unique to the time of the sun, and with the lack of sun-light our internal body clock such as sleep and appetite suddenly shifts and not in the good way. Genetics are another factor since SAD tends to run in families.

Location too plays a role. If you’re one liv-ing at higher altitudes or northern climates, your seasonal depression could take a big-ger toll than living anywhere else in the world.

More than 10 million people in India suffer from SAD. Whether you’re feeling blue or dealing with an actual sea-sonal disorder, here’s how you can manage this inner shift for many winters to come:

People simply aren’t aware of the term win-ter blues or SAD, and it’s definitely gotten graver than before, now seen more in wom-en than in men. Nevertheless, recognize your behavior and if you think you truly don’t have a reason to be down or upright depressed, it might be time to consult with a doctor. The hallmarks of SAD are sleep-ing too much and overeating.

Cocooning in your quilt makes you happi-est in the world, but most of us are simply too affected by the season to care about be-ing happy. The best advice is to step out of your home. Watch a movie at the hall, hang out with your friends, try new food, but simply don’t hibernate. It’ll only worsen your symptoms.

Every season has something unique to it, and what seems like the darkest of all times can re-ally be a beautiful journey if you go with the flow. Plan a trip to one of the best destination for winter (LINK TO WINTER DESTINA-TIONS), visit skating rings, have hot cocoa and marshmallows, have snow fights or simply fleet with theweather. Who knows, maybe winter would turn out to not be so bad after all.

Wintertime is the peak of all cravings for sweets and carbs, however what your body needs is green and wholesome nourishing foods which will activate your body and immunity. Nutrient dense foods like leafy vegetables, fresh fruits and warm soups will do wonders for you. Just make sure to eat well and healthy.

Recover the Vitamin D in your body by taking supplements or using light therapy. Light ther-apy is used to treat SAD by the use of artificial light. Light therapy, according to Harvard stud-ies, has been extremely beneficial in healing this disorder. You can simply buy light boxes and use light therapy to treat symptoms.

Pronounced hu-gah, hygge is a Danish term af-filiated with coziness and comfort. The feeling of snuggling in with warm quilts and cute jumpers? Yes, that’s hygge. Incorporate more of that in your life when the blues hit and you’ll feel much happier and healthier.

ENJOY THE WEATHER.

NOURISH WITH GOOD FOOD.

MAKE UP FOR LOST SUNLIGHT.
