This past fall, The Beck Initiative team partnered with Project HOME, Women of Change and SELF Inc, Safe Haven to develop a cognitive therapy training program for case managers and outreach workers who work with the chronically homeless population with behavioral health concerns. The main objective of this exciting new program is to increase the client’s engagement in the recovery process by increasing staff’s ability to work effectively with the clients by providing psycho education and foundational cognitive therapy training. This innovative training program consists of 16 hours of didactic training and 4 months of consultation, including real-time consultation for case managers.

This partnership has been truly extraordinary and a learning process for all involved. Prior to the start of the program, PENN shadowed the outreach workers to learn more about what their daily work looks like and understand their struggles and much strength. Currently, the outreach workers and case managers are learning such important skills as: building commitments, problem solving, understanding trauma reactions and self-care to reduce burnout. It is our goal that The Beck Initiative’s Homelessness Project will grow overtime and benefit more staff working with those in recovery and also the persons in recovery themselves.

Under the lead direction of Dr Torrey Creed, four of the six agencies have completed the rigorous 22-hour workshop series and are in the in the 6-month, 2-hours per week consultation phase. The remaining two agencies are scheduled to complete their workshop series in early February of 2011. The Beck Initiative Team is very excited about the Child Expansion and being a part of helping transform the lives of children and adolescents in the CBH network.
