Understanding positive thinking and self-talk

• Self-talk is the endless stream of thoughts that run through your head every day. These automatic thoughts can be positive or negative.

• Some of your self-talk comes from logic and reason. Other self-talk may arise from misconceptions that you create because of lack of information.

Excerpt from Power of Positive Thinking By Norman Vincent

Peale• "I do not ignore or minimize the hardships and

tragedies of the world, but neither do I allow them to dominate."

• "Believe in yourself! Have faith in your abilities. Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own powers you cannot be successful or happy. But with self-confidence you can succeed. A sense of inferiority and inadequacy interferes with the attainment of your hopes, but self-confidence leads to self-realization and successful achievement."

Conti…

• "We build up the feeling of security or insecurity by how we think. p. 10. ... And what is even more serious is the tendency to create, by the power of thought, the very condition we fear

Ways to “reactivate” traits

1. Think how you view the trait on a personal level

if you believe you can’t be confident, you

probably can’t, because your beliefs about the trait will affect your thinking, which affects your feelings, which affects your actions or behaviors

Examples of typical negative self-talk and how you might apply a positive

thinking twist include:

• Negative self-talk• I've never done it before

• It's too complicated

• I don't have the resources.

• There's not enough time.

• There's no way it will work.

• It's too radical a change.

• No one bothers to communicate with me.

• I'm not going to get any better at this.

• Positive spin• It's an opportunity to learn something

new.

• I'll tackle it from a different angle.

• Necessity is the mother of invention.

• Let's re-evaluate some priorities.

• I can try to make it work.

• Let's take a chance

• .I'll see if I can open the channels of communication

• I'll give it another try. 14Mrs. Najam-un-Nisa

• Connection with others. When you practice positive thinking, a connection with other people happens more easily, as you are open to them, and not so concerned with your own stuff.

• Also, when you are in a positive mood you are a joy to others, who may even feel enlightened by your presence.

• Move in the right direction to achieve what you want. Thinking positively brings clarity of mind and a courageous attitude, so starting new projects or getting on with existing ones becomes an exciting activity.

Tips to overcome negative thoughts (by Norman Vincent Peale)

• Picture yourself as succeeding. Look at yourself in the mirror and say, “I’m a positive person. I won’t let negative thoughts control me. I’m a winner in life.”

• Whenever a negative thought comes to mind, deliberately voice a positive thought to cancel it out.

Change the tone of your thoughts from negative to positive. For example, instead of thinking “This problem is too difficult” think “This problem is cool and challenging”.

Tips to overcome negative thoughts

• Gather with positive people. Be careful not to choose the wrong people or the situation will only get worse.

• Read an inspiring book. Spiritual books often do well.

• Take a nap so that you will wake up with a fresh mind.• Peale also says to spend some quiet time each day

relaxing, and not thinking about anything much. He says picture your mind as a pond and see if you can achieve the state of smoothness and no ripples. p.28

Tips to overcome negative thoughts

• Make yourself comfortable with failure. Failure is the stepping stone to success, so don’t be afraid to fail.

• Have realistic expectation. Accept the fact that people could make mistakes since nobody is perfect.

• Pace yourself - Remember that you cannot hurry into getting positive. You need to pace yourself in order to prevent yourself from breaking down. Go slowly and take life one day at a time.
