B4: BECOMING TRUE DISCIPLES OF OUR JEWISH LORD ON COLLEGE CAMPUSES
Group Discussion
• Who are the TRUE Disciples?
• How does Jesus’ JEWISH background influence our understanding of the scripture?
• Why are COLLEGE campuses important for making disciples?
B4: BECOMING TRUE DISCIPLES OF OUR JEWISH LORD ON COLLEGE CAMPUSES
Many ChrisJan groups approach college students by inviJng them to aUend church events, present the gospel, and help them to go to church. We would like you to join our discussion on how to develop a campus ministry by following the example of our Jewish Lord, share your insights and experience.
We will explore and discuss:
(1) the imperaJve of the great commission by our Jewish Lord; (2) the applicaJon of Scripture from an Hebraic perspecJve;
(3) the Jewish perspecJve toward becoming disciples; and (4) lessons learned from college campuses
The ImperaJve of the Great Commission
Ma1. 28:18-‐20
18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 therefore Go and make disciples of all the naJons, bapJzing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Fulfilling God’s purpose of creaHng man (Gen. 1:26-‐28): • to exercise His Kingship • to populate His image & likeness through man • to be with man
Hebraic PerspecJve on Gospel
Greek (euaggelion, εὐαγγέλιον) • occurs 99 Jmes in 94 verses in the NASB • good news, good Jdings It describes historic news of naJonal importance. In Jesus’ Jme, the Roman Empire considered the annual announcement of the birthday of Caesar as the “euaggelion” to the known world. It is to remind people of the rise of the king and his reign over the whole world!
Hebrew (basar, ;(ּבָׂשַר (bĕsowrah, ;(ּבְׂשֹוָרה • occurs 26 Jmes • good news News of na6onal importance: a victory in war, or the rise of a powerful new king
Hebraic PerspecJve on Kingdom of God
Kingdom of God = Kingdom of Heaven = Heaven?
In NASB,
Go to/enter Heaven = 0
Ascend to Heaven = 4
(3 in OT physical sky, 1 in NT Rm 10:6 physical sky or dwelling of God and heavenly beings G3772)
Kingdom of Heaven = Kingdom of God (Hebrew audience) (GenJle audience)
Go to/enter Kingdom of Heaven/Kingdom of God = 16
The Bible does not say believers go to heaven,
but to enter the Kingdom of Heaven!
