Bedfont & Feltham v Sandhurst Town Cherry Red Records Combined Counties Football League, Division One Saturday 18th August 2018 – Kick-Off: 3.00pm

Volume 6, Issue 2 Good afternoon everyone and welcome to The Orchard. This afternoon, we welcome the players, officials and supporters of Sandhurst Town Football Club; and our three match officials for our second home match of the 2018-19 season. We trust that you all enjoy the match and have a safe journey home afterwards. Well, where do I start? – Our first home match versus Bagshot saw us with a record-breaking 11-0 win. It was that weekend’s biggest win in Non-League football and saw Non-League guru Tony Incenzo declare us his Team of The Week on his TalkSport2 radio round-up. Our goals came from Michael Capon (4), Kelvin Karanja (3, inc 1 penalty), Farhad Mahboudi (2) and one each from Ross Nunn and Reece Gairy. It was a great win, and everyone at The Orchard was smiling. This placed us at the top of the table. Last Saturday, we visited Dorking Wanderers Reserves at their newly refurbished Meadowbank Stadium, and on a 3G pitch. The experience was different to the previous week, and the Yellows found themselves twice coming from behind to draw 3-3. Our goals that day came from Michael Capon, Reece Gairy and Kelvin Karanja. The draw moved us into second place as Eversley & California won their second match. Today’s visitors – Sandhurst Town, aka the Fizzers have transferred back to the Combined Counties League after two seasons in the Hellenic League. They lost 0-2 to Epsom & Ewell in their opening match and drew 1-1 with Wessex League side Lymington Town in the Extra Preliminary Round of the FA Cup last weekend. The replay on Wednesday saw them lose 1-5 to a strong Lymington side. We’re back at home on Tuesday evening when Frimley Green visit us. Kick off will be at 7.45pm. Next Saturday sees us back on the road, visiting Eversley & California. Kick off will be at 3pm. The full fixture list has been received from the league and this has already been posted on social media and our website. The list is also included further inside today’s programme. Enjoy the match and see you again soon. Rob – editor.

Bedfont & Feltham FC History: Bedfont & Feltham Football Club was founded in May 2012 following the amalgamation of Feltham FC and Bedfont Football and Social Club, taking Feltham's place in Division One of the Combined Counties Football League.

Feltham had already entered the 2012–13 FA Vase under their own name so the club played as Feltham FC until the start of the 2013–14 season. Two Sunday sides played in the West Middlesex Sunday Football League under the Bedfont & Feltham name; one finishing second in Division One and the other winning Division Two.

The Yellows' first two seasons saw them finish in a respectable fifth place in the Division One table having been early front-runners. They reached the First Round Proper of the FA Vase in 2013-14 and also won the Middlesex Premier Cup.

The club became eligible to compete in the FA Cup for the first time in 2014-15, and reached the First Round Qualifying. The same season also saw the club win the Division One Challenge Cup and become runners-up in the Southern Combination Challenge Cup competition.

For season 2015-16, the club restructured its squad and Youth set-up. The club started strongly and for the second time in its short history made the First Round Qualifying in the FA Cup and the FA Vase competitions. This season saw the Yellows finish as runners-up in Division One, earning promotion to the Premier Division of the Combined Counties Football League. The club also reached the final of the RPM Records Division One Challenge Cup for the second consecutive season.

The Premier Division experience in 2016-17 started tough with a 2-9 home defeat to

Epsom & Ewell on the opening day of the season. This seemed to pave the way for the club’s worst season since its formation: Finishing second from bottom in the Combined Counties Football League’s Premier Division. This resulted in relegation back to Division One.

The club was knocked out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle and of the FA Vase at the second. On a brighter note, they reached the semi-finals of the Southern Combination Challenge Cup and the quarter-finals of the Middlesex FA Senior Charity Cup having unceremoniously exited all other cup competitions in earlier rounds. This prompted the club to appoint Garry Haylock as Manager in late April 2017.

Life back in Division One in season 2017-18 started very poorly and in consequence, Garry Haylock departed in October 2017 to be replaced by Dan Huxley. The poor run experienced in 2016-17 continued, with the club exiting the FA Cup and FA Vase competitions in the opening rounds. The club reached the Quarter-Finals of the Middlesex Premier Cup; Third Round of the Division One Challenge Cup; Second Round of the Middlesex Charity Cup and Second Round of the Southern Combination Challenge Cup.

The squad saw a number of changes throughout the season and found it difficult to bond. This resulted in a bottom four finish. Dan Huxley announced his resignation at the end of the season.

The club quickly appointed former Staines Lammas manager Adam Bessent. He will attempt to arrest the mediocrity that has dogged the club since relegation two seasons ago.

The Club has retained the FA Charter Standard and is now in its sixth season. The current set-up sees a revived Sunday side and Youth teams from Under 7s to Under 10s

A couple of weeks ago I saw a video that reminded me of why Non-League football increasingly appeals to so many people.

The first half of the footage sees Liverpool’s squad, and manager Jurgen Klopp, boarding their team coach in 2017 doing their best to ignore supporters standing only yards away with their arms outstretched clutching replica shirts for the players to sign.

Now, before this becomes an attack on Liverpool, it is worth nothing that this is largely the same squad and manager who travelled to relegated Chester in pre-season, and respected their opponents by fielding an XI in each in half that wouldn’t have looked out of place in a Premier League fixture.

The match attracted a crowd of over 4000, securing vital funds for the National League side. Klopp has done the same in recent seasons with visits to Tranmere.

The video also conveniently cuts short before Daniel Sturridge and James Milner stop for fans – most of the 1.1 million people who saw this video won’t have known these facts, although that is no excuse for the other Reds player and their manager.

In the second half of the video, there is a striking contrast.

At Preston station, on the way back from their opening day defeat at AFC Fylde, Bromley players secured the National League club a supporter for life.

James, who looks no older than five or six, decked out in Bromley shirt, is stood on the pavement being introduced to every Ravens player with a handshake by captain Jack Holland as they step off the team coach.

James’ face as each of his heroes greets him is a picture. The video lasts for just 28 seconds but that is all takes to create a lifelong memory.

It was a timely reminder as the season started of the inclusivity of Non-League football – the reason myself and many others watch this level.

It’s being able to chat to your team’s star striker before, and even during, the warm-up or afterwards in the club bar. It’s being able to ask the manager over a pint why the two wingers swap sides. It’s doing ‘your bit’ for your club to help the cogs turning.

So well done to Bromley and Non-League for keeping things real. Football is just a game but let’s keep the experience fun, inclusive and enjoyable.

From Bedfont & Feltham FC Manager

Adam Bessent:

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to The Orchard. I hope our match officials and all associated with Sandhurst Town enjoy their short stay with us.

We had a faultless opening day here two weeks ago as the boys put 11 past Bagshot. I asked them to put in a performance that

would repay the support that we have received from all at the club since we had arrived and they definitely did that. Some great attacking football and some lovely goals, hopefully more of the same to come this season, especially here, as we look to make The Orchard a tough place to play for any opposition.

Last week, proved to be a much tougher test and one we needed. 5 players missing game one and 9 missing last week, August can be tough for every manager at this level. Superb new facilities at Dorking Wanderers and they have a young team to match. Lively, technically very good and well organised, I believe they will be tough to beat at Meadowbank this year. We never really got going and our mistakes were punished but 3 good goals again and coming from behind twice are positives we will take forward.

Thank you for your support and I hope you enjoy today's game.

Adam.

This Day In Football History:

- A rather topical one today, seeing that we welcome Brentford FC season ticket holders for a special price entry!

18 August 1979 - Brentford Beats Death

On 18 August 1979, Reading FC drew 2-2 with Brentford FC, thus ending Reading's 1,103-minute streak without conceding a goal. The match was the season-opener for both teams, and the first in Division Three for the newly-promoted Reading. Reading's keeper throughout the streak, which consisted of 11 consecutive clean sheets, was Englishman Steve Death, who made 471 appearances for the Royals from 1969 to 1982. The streak began on 28 March 1979, with Reading's 4-0 win over Grimsby Town. At the time, the Royals were playing in Division Four. The win moved them into first place in the table, which is where they finished after following up the win over Grimsby with a season-ending run of 7 more wins and 3 draws, earning promotion to Division Three. The streak was an English league record until 31 January 2009, when it was broken by Manchester United's Edwin Van Der Sar.

Sandhurst Town FC Club History:

Sandhurst Football Club was formed in 1910 and played in the Reading & District League until 1979 apart from a short spell in the East Berkshire Football League. In 1979, the Club was elected into the Aldershot & District Football League.1984 saw the Club finish as runners-up from whence they became founder members of the Chiltonian Football League and a stepping-stone toward becoming a senior club.

The best season in the Chiltonian Football League was in 1986-1987 when they finished in second place. In 1990 the Club applied for membership of the Combined Counties Football League and were granted senior status by the Berks & Bucks County Football Association. The first two seasons were disastrous finishing in bottom place on each occasion and only escaped relegation back to the Chiltonian Football League at the end of the second season due to the resignation of another member club. However, the form of the Club improved dramatically thereafter with manager Peter Browning bringing the Club the Aldershot Football Association Senior Invitation Challenge Cup in his first season followed by the Southern Combination Cup. Since then, the first team have managed to finish 5th in the premier division of the Combined Counties Football League, and in season 2006/2007 were winners of the Berks & Bucks FA Senior Trophy.

The first ground used by the Club was a field adjacent to the Bull & Butcher public house that may well have been used as the club headquarters. After a few years, a move was made to the Memorial Park where the Club remained until the 1996 close season, apart from a couple of seasons during the 1950’s spent on a nearby pitch in St. John’s Road.

The introduction of the National Lottery prompted an immediate bid for funding for a new ground in Bottom Meadow adjacent to the Memorial Park. With support and backing through additional matched funding from Bracknell Forest Borough Council and Sandhurst Town Council, the Club were successful in the first round of allocations by the National Lotteries Charities Board.

With support and backing through additional matched funding from Bracknell Forest Borough Council and Sandhurst Town Council, the Club were successful in the first round of allocations by the National Lotteries Charities Board.

The new facilities opened in August 1997 at a cost of £265,000. The club celebrated it’s Centenary season in 2010/11 winning the Combined Counties League Cup final and getting through to two other semi-finals.

The club has a strong community focus running teams in U18 Allied Counties Youth League league and a women’s team in the Southern Region Women’s Football League, as well as a Sunday team in the Aldershot & Camberley District Sunday League.

A major revamp and new 1st team management under Michael Herbert also saw us return to Division 1 of Combined Counties League after two years in the Hellenic League.

Game of the People: From gameofthepeople.com

Down by the riverside, something stirs.

SOME impressive new signings, a significant chunk of cash invested and a healthy amount of continuity. Fulham have embarked on their return to the Premier League with gusto, arguably making more noise this close season than their far more celebrated neighbours along the road.

I have to admit I have a vested interest in Fulham doing well having bought a season ticket for 2018-19 when promotion was far from certain. For £ 390, I am watching Premier League football at one of Britain’s best football locations at a club that used to define the word “nice”. When you consider it is a couple of hundred quid to watch step three Non-League in my home town, Fulham are offering value for money. Or maybe, it is just a case of realistic pricing.

Fulham may not consider they have a long-term future in the Premier, but on the evidence of their recent expenditure, they’re having a go at more than survival. In the space of a few days, they have secured some interesting players, and judging by the news flow, there may be more to come before the transfer deadline.

The key signing, as far as many people were concerned, was luring Aleksandar Mitrović from Newcastle United, a deal which cost Fulham around £ 20 million after a loan spell last season that saw the Serbian international score 12 goals in 20 games. Going into the Premier League without a quality striker would be suicidal to some extent so tying-up Mitrović was something of a coup. With the current situation at Newcastle, a move to London must have looked very attractive for the 23 year-old.

It is good to see André Schürrle return to South West London on a two-year loan deal from Borussia Dortmund. He’s still only 27 and he’s won 57 caps for Germany. His stint at Chelsea ended in January 2015 when he was sold to Wolfsburg for £ 22 million. Normally a wide man, he can also play as a second striker, and is most effective when a team plays on the counter-attack. This could be a very good piece of business by Fulham.

Also worth watching out for is midfielder Jean Michaël Seri, a 27 year-old Ivorian who was also on the shopping list of both Dortmund and Chelsea. Apparently, Fulham have paid £ 25 million, a club record, to Nice for a player who has won 18 caps for the Ivory Coast. Also making the journey from the south of France is versatile defender Maxime Le Marchand.

Of course, Fulham have one of the most coveted youngsters in London football in Ryan Sessegnon, who made an impact in 2017-18 with 15 goals in the Championship. He’s just 18 and has been capped by England under-21 and there was [premature] talk of him being called-up by England’s senior team. How long Fulham keep him is open to debate. Fulham manager Slaviša Jokanovic has described his protégé as a mix between Real Madrid duo Marcelo and Gareth Bale, which is tantamount to saying, “come and get him…but he will cost you.” Tottenham have shown an interest, but one senses the Sessegnon story will run through the season, especially if Fulham start to struggle and need money to strengthen mid-season.

With their new signings and players like the impressive Tom Cairney and Sessegnon in their line-up, Fulham may do much better than many people think, though. They could slip very comfortably back into the Premier League this season – if they can keep their key players and, of course, their manager.

Introducing Sideburn Bob - The People's Champion

Since 1974 #sideburnbob has been gracing Non-League football programmes either as a front

cover or inside a programme for various advertising, as far as I am aware he was first spotted

in the 1974 Derby County  Ram Boutique advert and thereafter in other various League Club

programmes first appearing on the 1976 Kilmarnock programme as a front cover, from there on

in fronting 100s of non-league programmes with his glory years being 1980's & 90s.

The mystery of exactly where Bob came from continues. Tony Williams who many of you will

know from his Non-League publications wrote in the non league grounds of Great Britain that

he had first spotted Bob in a 1950s football magazine and had pasted him into a scrapbook.

Doubt remains on this siting as nothing was ever spotted again for over 20 years until the Ram

Boutique advert. Popular suggestion is he is in fact clipart which is more plausible as Bob looks

like a 70s character and famous footballer Malcolm MacDonald with his ever present partner

looking like Rodney Bewes from the Likely Lads which older readers will have fond memories

of. So, why do I love this character? Well simply because it brings back memories of

programmes collected throughout the years. He is  an iconic figure for me - some of my first

memories of attending games within Non-League.

Throughout the 2017-18 season, there were many clubs surprisingly interested in issuing

programmes with the iconic image either on the front cover or within the programme itself.

Prolific issuers were Portland United, Sholing Sports and Bedfont & Feltham and big thanks

goes to those 3 programme editors - and of course, to all the other editors that issued.

#sideburnbob the People's Champion will continue to be an iconic figure for me and the search

is on for his history and collecting programmes.

Tony Candland.
