Our funky community has been known for its generosity for many years. As we approach this holiday season, we would like to highlight some organizations that give thanks all year round. The local churches have been giving back to the community since the earliest days of Folly. All three churches collaborate on a food pantry housed at the Baptist Church. The Folly Beach Methodist Church donates to organizations that help children in need in the Lowcountry such as Beds = Dreams and HALOS. The Folly Beach Baptist Church hosts a Soup Kitchen at noon every Monday, and a free dinner every Wednesday night. Our Lady of Good Counsel has set up blessing boxes around the community where residents can donate canned goods and non-perishable food items for all those in need. We can also see this giving spirit in the business community. Their generosity is shown through donations to our local churches for dinners or fundraisers or to schools around the area. For example, the Folly Beach Association of Business hosts the annual Follypalooza which raises money for local cancer patients and others with medical ailments. This event over the years has paid over $80,000 in patient bills for over 40 people in the Folly Community. In addition to the businesses, the Folly Beach Exchange Club members strive to make Folly a better place to live. They support activities that benefit youth, promote pride in our country, and honor military and public service providers, to name a few. The City maintains the Folly Relief Fund for residents who have experienced hardship. This relief fund is funded by donations. If you would like to learn more about the Folly Relief Fund, please contact Marlene Estridge. The City also hosts family related activities that bring us all together (such as Folly Family Fun Night and National Night Out), as well as supports all charitable events on Folly Beach. Furthermore, we have many non-profit organizations operating on Folly Beach which help people from around the world. Let’s thank Warrior Surf Foundation, Folly Angels, Pet Helpers, the Folly Anglers, Surfers Healing, and many more. Their charitableness makes Folly stronger and attracts tourists’ visits. The Civic Club would like to thank all those who give without hesitation, especially during this holiday season. Let’s continue this philanthropic tradition for years to come. Operation Christmas Child/Samaritan’s Purse Samaritan’s Purse is a nondenominational evangelical Christian organization providing spiritual and physical aid to hurting people around the world. Samaritan’s Purse has met the needs of poor, sick, and suffering people in more than 100 countries. This year, Folly Beach Baptist Church will be a drop off location for Operation Christmas Child. Shoeboxes are available in a container in front of the Baptist Church information marquee. Inside the box are directions on how to fill a box and where and when to return the box, as well as a contact in case you have any questions. This is a wonderful opportunity for families to share an experience in “giving back” to those who are less fortunate and in need. Home and Garden Club Barbara & Harry Bishop at 1673 East Ashley are November Yard of the Month recipients. Harry grew up on Folly in the '40's.  They owned a vacation/rental home at this location over 40 years before building this as their retirement home a few years ago. At that time a new yard was also designed. A plush bed of zoysia grass is engulfed with plants selected in Barbara's favorite color scheme of purples, pinks, whites and blues.  A lofty palmetto oversees the front left bed of purple society garlic, rosemary, salvia and Indian hawthorn.  A sago and pindo palm are near fennel which was chosen to host the chrysalises of swallow tail butterflies. Purple Mexican petunias begin the march to the left side bed. Lavender crepe myrtles reside here with pittosporum.  A first cousin who is a horticulturist comes each year and brings offerings of plants. The numerous rosemary plants lining this left side are one such offering. These abound also in the front right bed nestling with purple Mexican petunias and society garlic. A new entry of cardoon which produces a thistle like bloom is unique to this bed.  A pindo palm preceeds a line of palmettos banked by Indian hawthorn. Yellow Lady Bank’s roses grace this side.  A statue of a boy with a horn culminates this procession among caladiums, giant evergreen liriope and blue agapanthus. Triple palmettos float above white plumbago in a dense bed of pittosporum, ferns and liriope concealing a statue from the garden of good and evil in front of their entry.  A narrow stand of papyrus anchors their steps with a substantial potted table of succulents.

Barbara loves things that bloom and watching all our wildlife.  She is a bluebird whistler, using live mealworms to entice them to nest while using a whistle to call them.  The Bishops find Folly fun and laidback.  They appreciate their good neighbors. Congratulations for their lavish garden. The Garden Club will meet at noon, November 26th in the Community Center.  Our speaker will be Lauren Rust with the Lowcountry Marine and Mammal Network. Everyone is welcome to attend. Happy Thanksgiving,

Lynn Ray Smalley (843) 588-0093 [email protected]

Exchange Club Congratulations to Lauren Morre, and Johnny Branks for receiving the police officer and firefighter of the year award. We can’t thank our first responders enough for what they do in keeping our community a safe and enjoyable place to live. Also, a quick shout out to the Civic Club for yet another wonderful Halloween carnival. It gives the community, especially our children, a fun event for Halloween! November brings our One Nation Under God Breakfast and our Golden Age Dinner. The Golden Age Dinner is for our local widows and widowers to celebrate Thanksgiving. The One Nation Under God breakfast will be November 2nd, 10 am at Loggerheads, and the Golden Age Dinner will be November 21st, 6pm at the Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. Also November brings election day which falls on November 5th. On November 11th we will acknowledge Veterans Day with a traditional flag display. Veterans are our true American heroes and we cannot thank them enough for all they’ve done for our country. Salute to our troops and veterans. Happy Thanksgiving - Gobble Gobble! Our main dish will be ham prepared by Patti Holsclaw.  All others are to bring a covered dish. Our speaker will be Spencer Wetmore, Folly Beach City Administrator.  She will discuss the beach, the city's future capital plans; which include water mains, redundant water lines across the Folly River bridge, pedestrian paths, and a facelift over the next few years for City Hall.  Come and hear about our Edge of America's future. We Seniors agree we live in one of the best places there is to live! We always want to remember our sick and shut ins.  We wish you a safe and happy Thanksgiving. Fellow Citizens, We have concluded another hurricane season with “minimal” impact to Folly. That is very fortunate for us, but while we celebrate this, we must remember there are many other people in the world not so fortunate. It is easy to

forget when it does not impact us or our families directly, and the news media has seemed to lose interest in a story that doesn’t “sell” any longer. As we approach this Thanksgiving Season, let us remember those less fortunate and keep them in our prayers and our goodwill. Maybe as the “Crazy Season” approaches, we might even consider donating to help someone recover their lives and skip one or two of those Christmas presents.    Trivia Quiz; Who was the first president to declare a day of Thanksgiving and prayer in America? No, it was not Abraham Lincoln. President Lincoln did make Thanksgiving a federal holiday in 1863, declaring the last Thursday in November as the set holiday. He did so at the request of Sarah Josepha Hale, the author of the nursery rhyme, “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” She had campaigned for years to have it set as a federal holiday - a day of thanksgiving and prayer for our nation. So much for the history lesson, as you can read much, much more about Thanksgiving and its celebration. But, as a blessed city I would urge everyone to take a few moments and make a list of what you and I should be thankful for. Maybe even send those lists to me in an email, and we could post them on the city’s website to help all of us be aware of our great blessings.  Don’t forget the City’s Community Thanksgiving service. As always, it is held on the Sunday before Thanksgiving, November 24th this year. It will be held this year at the Baptist Church with the service beginning at 6pm. We do ask you to bring some canned goods for use in the Folly Beach Food Bank. As I close this article I do remind you if you have any questions or concerns for or about the city, please feel free to contact me anytime. [email protected] or 843 729 0298

PS. The first President to declare a day of Thanksgiving was George Washington. In 1789 at the request of Congress, he proclaimed November 26th a day of national thanksgiving for the U.S. Constitution.
