    Hold the line Telephone memory

In a game of telephone memory, students practice identifying and using standard telephone phrases. Where: at the end of the unit Learning objective and skills: identifying and matching standard telephone phrases Key language: telephone phrases Time: approximately 20 minutes, longer if you also do the role-play activity Preparation & materials: copy and cut up one set of cards per group of three or four students. 1:1: simply play the game with your student. Class procedure 1 Shuffle the cards and hand out one set to each group. 2 Students put the cards face down on the table. 3 The first player starts by turning over a card of their choice. Then he/she tries to find the rest of the

phrase on a second card. When players find a matching pair, they keep the cards. If the two cards turned over do not match, they stay on the table face down.

4 Continue until all matches are found. 5 The student with the most pairs wins the game. Continued practice In pairs, students could role-play a phone call, trying to use all or most of the sentences they came

across in the memory game. To create a more authentic situation, you could ask them to sit back-to-back and pretend to use their mobile phones while talking to each other.
