INTRODUCTION

BEGGED, BORROWED & STOLEN was conceived late one hazy nightdu ring a discussion on the limited availability of simple tunes for beg innermusos. In a fit of idiocy , we dec ided to do something about it - so here it is!

We haven't used the simplified versions, as we fee l that some of thecharacter and "fee l" of a tune is lost if it is reduced to a simpler form.

Where we had several versions of the one tune, we chose the one mostusually played. Where we had alternate names , the most common was used ,A list of alternative names will be found at the back.

Most of the tun es were , in fact, begged , borrowed or stolen from the SouthAustralian Celt ic Music Club, without whom we wouldn't be playing musicnow, and this book would never have been produced. Thanks, peoplel

Our thanks a lso to a number of musicians around Austra lia for thei rsometimes unwitting (but hopefully not unwilling) help, encourageme nt ,tunes and versions.

We realise we can't please everybody. We will probably have " incorrec tversions" and "mistakes" . We would be delighted to hear from anybody withhelpful advice , correc tions, etc.

Co to it. Cood playing and have fun - that's the most importa nt th ing"

A NOTE TO ourrARISTS

As th is book was planned for musos beginning their celtic expe rience, thechords marked above each stave are as basic as we can make them withoutbeing deadly boring or killing the music . In some instances , altern at ive oradditiona l chords are shown in brackets. (Usually where the opt ion is just toogood to ignore .)

Remember there are on ly two rules for accompanying ce ltic music : a) Thebac king should express the fee ling of the tune - the lilt. One guita rist in agroup of musos can make the difference betwee n a sessionbeingmagic ormund ane . b) There is no such thing as traditional ce ltic guitar backing! Therefore , whatever yo u want to try is legitimate if it lifts the tune . So don'tbe inhibited by the pu rists, and do listen to some of the fantasti c and yetsimple guita ring showing up on disc these days - it will encou rage you .

One fina l word; as soon as these ' chords have led you into the music ,build on them , embell ish; use them as your start ing point and move on fromthem .
