BEHAVIOR.
VIOR.
Letter From the EditorThis month, we at BEHAVIOR wanted to focus on symbolic interaction. Sounds like a term strait out of a Sociology textbook, right? Well, in fact, it is. What exactly is symbolic interaction? Well for those of you who didn’t take Sociology 101 during your freshman year of college let us define the term for you. Symbolic Interaction is a speculation, which theorizes human beings act towards people and things, based upon the meanings that they have given to those people or things. In simpler terms we could say that it’s “judging a book by its cover”. In this harsh and critical world, fashion is an outlet for personal vision and creativity. Unfortunately, clothing and fashion is one way that people judge, and categorize each other. Maybe the person wearing the ripped and tattered T-shirt is actually a cleanly person with obsessive-compulsive disorder, who enjoys wearing “worn” and “deconstructed” clothing. Orcould the woman on the subway wearing head to toe Gucci be a starving, low-income laborer who is trying to mask their “identity”.This is what we want to focus on regarding symbolic interaction; how the way you dress affects people’s perceptions. Maybe this issuecan be a helpful handbook for “dressing the part” or giving off a good first impression. It’s also full of beautiful and gritty editorials of street fashion, raw and uncut. These are for you to make your own assumptions about. But just remember, you are judging a person not based on their character, but by the symbols, which they display.
Enjoy the issue, and try to look at people and things with a different perspective. This can help you to see things in new lights, and maybe you can learn something new about the world or even yourself.
