TheroleofrewardsinrecognisingandpromotingAstreaAcademySheffield’svaluesisakeypartofdevelopingthepotentialofyoungpeoplebygivingencouragementandpraise.Praiseisakeycomponentofgoodteachingandgoodstaff/pupilrelationships.Goodbehaviour isalsobest promoted and developed by drawing attention to and rewarding well behaved and hardworking pupils. Praise needs to be usedappropriately,sincerelyandlinkedtotangibleexamplesofapupil’sstrengths.Therewardspolicyoperateswithinthisguidingprinciple.Thesystemalsolinksindividualrecognitionandachievementtothehousesystemanddevelopsahealthycompetitivenessathouselevel,fosteringatangiblesenseofbelonging.

For example,behaviouratthebusstoporonthejourneytoandfromtheAcademyisboundbythesamerulesasifintheAcademygrounds.Ifunabletoreprimandthepupil,thememberofstaffwhowitnessesanycontraventionofthecodeofconductshouldgototheAcademyreceptiontoattempttoidentifythepupil(s)concernedandreporttheincidenttoHOD/SLT.TheHODand/orSLTdecideontheseriousnessoftheincidentreportedandthenatureofconsequencesnecessaryinlinewiththeproceduresoutlinedabove.

ConfiscationofinappropriateitemsSchools’generalpowertodiscipline,assetoutinSection91oftheEducationandInspectionsAct2006,enablesamemberofstafftoconfiscate,retainordisposeofapupil’spropertyasadisciplinarypenalty,wherereasonabletodoso.Wherethepersonfindsothersubstanceswhicharenotbelievedtobecontrolleddrugsthesecanbeconfiscatedwhereateacherbelievesthemtobeharmfulordetrimentaltogoodorderanddiscipline.Thiswouldincludenewpsychoactivesubstancesor‘legalhighs’.Ifschoolstaffareunabletoidentifythelegalstatusofadrug,itshouldbetreatedasacontrolleddrug.DfE2012Itisthepolicyofthisschoolthatnochildshouldbringanydrugtoschoolwithoutpermission.Ifachildwillneedmedicationduringtheschooldaytheparentorguardianshouldnotifytheschoolandaskpermissionforthemedicationtobebrought.Thisshouldbetakendirectlytotheschool

officeforsafekeeping.Anymedicationneededbyachildwhilstinschoolmustbetakenunderthesupervisionofateacherorotheradultworker.Theschoolwilltakeveryseriouslymisuseofanysubstancessuchasglue,othersolventsoralcohol.Theparentsorguardiansofanychildinvolvedwillalwaysbenotified.Anychildwhodeliberatelybringssubstancesintoschoolforthepurposeofmisusewill/maybepunishedbyafixed-termexclusion.Iftheoffenceisrepeated,thechildwill/maybepermanentlyexcluded,andthepoliceandsocialservicesinformed.Ifanychildisfoundtobesufferingfromtheeffectsofalcoholorothersubstances,arrangementswillbemadeforthatchildtobetakenhome.Itisforbiddenforanyone,adultorchild,tobringontotheschoolpremisesanyillegaldrugs.Anychildwhoisfoundtohavebroughttoschoolanytypeofillegalsubstancewill/maybepunishedbyatemporaryexclusion.Thechildwillbere-admittedtotheschoolfollowingthefixedterm.Aparentorguardianofthechildwillalsoneedtovisittheschoolanddiscusstheseriousnessoftheincidentwithaseniormemberofstaff.Iftheoffenceisrepeatedthechildwill/maybepermanentlyexcluded.Ifachildisfoundtohavedeliberatelybroughtillegalsubstancesintoschool,andisfoundtobedistributingthesetootherpupilsformoney,thechildwill/maybepermanentlyexcludedfromtheschool.TherelevantCYPS,thepoliceandsocialserviceswillalsobeinformed.
Powertousereasonableforce-PositiveHandling,PhysicalInventionAllmembersofstaffareregularlyupdatedwithregardtogovernmentguidanceregardingtheuseofPositiveHandling,PhysicalInterventionandDutyofCare.Membersofstaffhavethepowertousereasonableforcetopreventpupilscommittinganoffence,injuringthemselvesorothers,ordamagingproperty,andtomaintaingoodorderanddisciplineintheclassroom.TheactionsofstaffwillalwaysbeinthebestinterestofthechildandareinlinewithgovernmentguidelinesontheUseofReasonableForce.Undernocircumstanceswillphysical

Reasonableforcemaybeusedto:-

behaviourofothers- preventapupilfromattackingamemberofstafforanotherpupil,ortostopafightintheplayground;and- restrainapupilatriskofharmingthemselvesthroughphysicaloutbursts.
DfEGuidance2013
ExclusionOnlytheheadteacher(ortheactingheadteacher)hasthepowertoexcludeachildfromschool.Theheadteachermayexcludeachildforoneormorefixedperiods,forupto45daysinanyoneschoolyear.Inextremeandexceptionalcircumstances,theheadteachermayexcludeachildpermanently.IfthePrincipalexcludesachild,s/heinformstheparentsimmediately,givingreasonsfortheexclusion.Atthesametime,theheadteachermakesitcleartotheparentsthattheycan,iftheywish,makerepresentationregardingtheexclusiontothegoverningbody.Theschoolinformstheparentshowtomakeanysuchrequest.ThePrincipalinformstheLAandthegoverningbodyaboutanypermanentexclusion,aboutanyfixed-termexclusionsbeyondfivedays(10lunchtimes)inanyonetermandshouldtheexclusionmeanthepupilwillmissapublicexamination.

Thegoverningbodyhasadisciplinecommitteewhichismadeupofbetweenthreeandfivemembers.Thiscommitteeconsidersanyrepresentationmadebytheparent/guardianonbehalfofthegovernors.Whenanindependentreviewpanelmeetstoconsideranexclusion,theyconsiderthecircumstancesinwhichthechildwasexcludedandanyrepresentationbyparentsandtheLA.FixedtermexclusionTheAcademywillusethesewhenaseriousincidentoccurs,orpersistentmisbehaviouranddisturbingthelearningofotherscontinuesafterothersanctionshavebeenused.Allincidentsareinvestigatedfullyandpupilsaregiventheopportunitytomakeawrittenorverbalstatement.ThePrincipalwillconsiderallexclusionsinlinewithcurrentregulations.Whereexclusionsareissued,telephoneandletterwillinformparentsaboutthenatureoftheincidentsandthepossibilityofexclusion.Pupilswillbeissuedwithworkfortheperiodoftheirexclusionandareintegrationmeeting/interviewwillbeheldpriortoreadmission.Parentsareexpectedtoattend.Duringdays1-5ofanexclusionparentsarelegallyresponsiblefortheirchild’swhereabouts,withthepossibilityofapenaltynoticeifthechildisfoundinapublicplacewithoutreasonablejustification.AspartofthereintegrationprocessachildmayberequiredtospendadayinSeclusion.TheAcademyisalwaysexploringalternativestofixedtermexclusions.Reference:EducationandInspectionsAct2006EducationAct2011TrainingStaffandAssociateStaffwillreceiveyearlyrefreshertraining.NewstaffwillreceiveaninductionwhichwillincludeasessiononthebehaviourpolicyandexpectationsatAstreaAcademySheffield.

BEHAVIOURSUPPORTAt Astrea Academy Sheffield we will support our pupils who are experiencing behavioural,emotionalorotherdifficultiesthatmightimpedeself-disciplineandeffectivelearning.Asstatedpreviously, we believe themost effectiveway ofmanaging behaviour is to praise and rewardgoodbehaviour.Thereareavarietyofmechanismsavailablewithearlyinterventionalwaysouraim.Where pupils are having difficulty conforming to the expected standards of behaviour variousstrategiesmaybeemployedtohelpthemimprove.Theuseofthedailyreportform:Althoughasanction,thisservesadualpurposeofenablingformtutors,HeadsofDepartmentorVicePrincipal tocheckonbehaviourandgive instant feedbackandencouragementwhere improvements areevident. This report is takenhome forparentalsignature and involves home and academy in daily monitoring and support. Parents will beinformediftheirchildisplacedonreport.ReportsissuedfromtheVicePrincipal.Ifapupil isupsetorneedssomeoneto talk toaboutan issue insideoroutsideof school, theyshould go toMain reception and speak to amember of staff. Some pupilswill be given earlylunchcards toattendpupil support lunchclub, foreither learningoremotional support. SupportProgramme(PSP)and/oranEarlyHelpForm(EHF)•Followingsupport,itmaybenecessarytoconsiderotherapproachese.g.anEducation,HealthandCarePlan(EHCP),attendanceatashortstayplacementawayfromthemainschoolsiteTheacademyrecognisestheEqualityAct2010,inrespectofsafeguardingandinrespectofpupilswithspecialeducationalneeds(SEN).MentoringSomepupilswhohavebeenidentifiedasstrugglingtomanagetheirbehaviourmaybereferredtooneofthelearningmentors.Theywillworkwiththemforanhouraweekoveranagreedperiodoftime,focusingontheparticulardifficultiestheyarehavinganddevelopingstrategiestoavoidfurtherproblemsarising.Anactionplanwillbedrawnupandparentswillbecontactedtodiscusstherelevantissuesandtheprogresstheymake.BehaviourcontractsParents of pupils who persistently break school rules will be required to sign a behaviourcontract.Thiswillidentifyagreedtargetswhicharerelevanttotheparticularpupil.IEPsAnypupilwithastatementofspecialeducationalneedswillhavean individualeducationplan.Targetswillbesetandreviewedbyallstaffwhoteachthatpupil,twiceayear.Theseplanswillalso suggest teaching strategies which will help them make progress and demonstrate thenecessarybehavioursforlearning.TheseplansaremonitoredbytheSENCOandVicePrincipal.RestorativePracticemayalsobeusedtohelppupilsthroughunresolvedissueswiththeirpeers.Whereappropriate,specialistsupportwillbeprovidedonaonetoonebasisor insmallgroupsthiscouldtaketheformofmentoring,therapy,angermanagementorsocialskillswork.ThePastoralSupportProgrammewill:Thisisasupportprogrammeofferedtopupilswhoareatriskofexclusion.ItwillbeagreedwithparentsasaresultofameetingwiththemtowhichaSheffieldexclusionofficerwillbeinvitedwhereappropriate.Thismeetingwillconsiderthecausesforconcernandthe steps suggested to improve the situation. Other agencies such as social services, housing,voluntaryorganisations,thecareersservice,couldalsobeinvolvedasappropriate.Indrawinguptheplantheschoolwill,indiscussionwithothers:
