On Tuesday, October 24th students can celebrate a healthy lifestyle with Wyland’s Apple Crunch Day.

Apple Crunch

Did you know that apples are fat free and only 81

calories? They are the perfect size for a healthy snack.

Whether you like them sweet, tart, smooth, crunchy, or

in a sauce, there is an apple choice for everyone!

Their natural vitamins and minerals mean they are a

great way to get energy.

Wyland’s Paws-itive Helping Hands Club

ATTENTION 3rd, 4th, and 5th GRADE STUDENTS!! Join us for our 5th year!

This after-school group performs service-oriented projects to give back to the community. The students will learn about, and participate in, various projects that support our neighbors in need. Some of last year’s outreaches included:

Organizing a food drive for North Hills Community Outreach Assisting with making mats for the homeless

Pet food/supply drive and on-site visit from an animal shelter Making candy treat bags & decorating lunch bags for local shut-in’s

Making and selling pencil toppers for The Caring Place

Meetings will be held on Tuesdays in the Multi-Purpose Room from dismissal time until 4:30pm. Pick-up will be inside the building. The first meeting will be scheduled for October 24, 2017. Remaining meeting dates are: Nov. 14, Dec. 12, Jan. 9 (tentative), Jan. 23, Feb. 6, Feb. 27, Mar. 13, April 10, April 24 (tentative), and May 8. Note: For each meeting day, a ‘Change in Transportation’ note (found on the HTSD Wyland homepage) is required. The student does not need to attend every meeting in order to participate in this program. Please consider a $5.00 cash donation to help offset the cost of supplies used for the projects. If your student is interested in being a ‘Helping Hand’, please complete the following form, with your optional donation, and return it to the school by Friday, October 20, 2017.

Box Tops Raffle and Contest

Did you know that each Box Top earns 10¢ for the school? These

can really add up. In years past, the PTO has earned as much as

$1,500 in a school year, which covers a lot of programs!

Wyland collects box tops throughout the school year, and submits

them to Box Tops for Education. We are approaching the first

mailing deadline – so gather up your box tops and send them in

with your child(ren)!

Please send the box tops in an envelope or a baggie with

your child’s name. We will have a monthly drawing, and each

grade level will have a winner for a $1 Wymart gift certificate (so

make sure your child’s name is marked on the baggie and turned

into their teacher).

There will also be a classroom contest later in the year. Each

classroom’s box tops will be counted, and the classroom that

collects the most will win a prize!

Please send in your box tops by

October 20th for the initial drawing.

Your child is taking part in classroom lessons from Common Sense Education’s K–12 Digital Citizenship Curriculum, designed to educate and guide young people to harness the power of the Internet and digital tools so they can become safe, responsible, and respectful digital citizens.

WHAT IS DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP?

Digital media and technology is evolving at a rapid pace, bringing with it amazing opportunities as well as real risks for our children. On the positive side, young people are using the Internet and mobile technologies to create, connect, explore and learn in ways never before imagined. Challenges from harmful behaviors, cyberbullying to digital cheating, are surfacing in schools and in homes across the country. Young people face ethical challenges daily without a roadmap to guide them.

WHAT COMMON SENSE EDUCATION TEACHES

The core message of the curriculum is one of empowerment: With powerful digital tools that allow for creation and communication comes great responsibility. The curriculum centers on 8 main categories based on the digital ethics research of Dr. Howard Gardner and The GoodPlay Project at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

WHAT FAMILIES CAN DO

Common Sense Education takes a whole-community approach to digital citizenship by providing parent resources to help you support your kid’s learning. As we engage in these lessons in class, we will be sending home parent tip sheets, videos, and an occasional activity worksheet for you to do together with your kids.
