curriculum units.

C. Rationale Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven…

After our responsibility to worship God, the next task of the individual Christian and the Christian community is to facilitate the doing of God’s will ON EARTH. The earth is the time-space dimension of ordinary human life. That means that the doing of God’s will on earth is doing what he likes to see done in all of the affairs of human existence.

Page 4: Being Transformed by the Renewing of Your Mind€¦ · Being Transformed by the Renewing of Your Mind A Short Course A. Global Aim This course aims to equip participants with the

What is God’s will for the earth? Is it not the same as His will for heaven? God desires that our individual, family and community lives are lived in the order and peace that comes from our honour and obedience to Him and our living in His provision. Is it God’s will on earth that we see corruption in politics? No, God has told us clearly what He expects of human leadership and that the outcome of their work should be the peaceful and prosperous co-existence of human society. Is it God’s will on earth that we see economic exploitation of a global scale that plunges some societies further into desperate poverty while allowing others to be unbelievably wealthy? No, God has told us about justice in the market place and our economic responsibilities and that the outcome of our economic activity should be mutual benefit, justice and opportunity for the provision the needs of all. Is it God’s will on earth that we see the breakdown of marriage and family, the breakdown of law and order, increasing theft and violence, the breakdown of morality, etc? We Christians are a sorry sight when we just look at these things and wag our heads and say that they are signs that Christ must be coming soon. What? The same Christ that prayed that God’s will be done on earth as it is in heaven? The same Christ that commissioned His followers to make disciples of all nations and to teach them all that they had learned of Him? This course is dedicated to the mission of helping Christians to grow in knowledge and understanding of some of what is “God’s will on earth” so that we might in turn work towards seeing that God’s will is done on this earth in our generation. It is a course of “meat”, designed to equip Christians to be teachers of God’s truth, rather than a course of “milk” to sustain the new Christian in the basics of believing. The meat will need a careful chewing over in discussion with other people who are also working to apply God’s truths to the complex issues of life.

D. Time allocation Strand 1 – 35 hours comprising:

15 hours seminar/workshop

20 hours personal study. Strand 2 – (not included in this document) 10 hours comprising:

6 hours seminar/workshop

6 hours personal work on curriculum unit.

Select Bibliography Some readers may find themselves feeling the need for a broader and deeper examination of the issues of developing a Biblical Christian worldview. To assist such people we include here a selection of sources with our commentary on the contribution which readers might receive from them. WE do not necessarily agree with every proposition made in the books or websites listed – they are listed because they have a useful contribution to make to the development of a Biblical Christian worldview.

Books & Courses 1. Christian Heritage College - "Developing a Christian World View" (a one-semester study offered as a part of the college B.Ed. programme.) This course uses many of the sources mentioned here. It is an excellent way to make a thorough examination of world views and their implications, and to establish a real sense of confidence in your own grasp of a Christian world view. 2. Colson.C. & Pearcy.N. – “How Now Should We Live?”, Tyndale, Illiois, 1999. An outstanding and very readable declaration of the competence of a Biblical Christian worldview in helping Christians to understand and minister to contemporary society. This book also has a passionate plea for Christian to not just concentrate on personal salvation, but to prepare themselves to redeem their cultures. 3. Connor.K.J. – “The Foundations of Christian Doctrine”, Acacia Press, Australia, 1980. This text is the one that is summarized in the “Christian Doctrines” section of our book. Readers can refer directly to Connor by doctrine name and number.

4. Cresby, A.A. - “Your Will be Done”, Arthur.A. Cresby, Toowoomba, Qld, 1979. Reveals the safeguards of liberty enshrined in the Australian constitution. 5. Custance, A.C. - “Noah’s Three Sons: Human History in Three Dimensions”, Academie Books, Grand Rapids, Mich. 1975. This book traces the historical movement of Noah’s three sons from the Ark. It also identifies the important contributions that each of those sons made to human knowledge and experience. 6. Davis, R. - “Magna Carta: Icon of Liberty”, Dean and Chapter of Lincoln, Lincoln, 1988. Highlights essential documents in the development of Western Christian liberty. 7. Ham, K. - “The Lie: Evolution”, Master Books, El Cajon, CA, 1987. This book, in a very readable and intellectually satisfying manner, points to the competence of a scientific and intellectual position based on a belief in the accuracy of the Bible. It also convincingly points to the need for a Creation foundation in education and belief. 8. Hummel, C.E. - “The Galileo Connection. Resolving Conflicts between Science & the Bible”, Inter Varsity Press, Illinois, USA, 1986. Hummel explores through the lives of Copernicus, Kepler, Galileo, and Newton the historical controversies and conflict between science and the way churchmen have interpreted the Bible. He then discusses his understanding of the Bible’s relationship to science. 9. Johnstone, Patrick - “Operation World”, Crossroad Distributers, Australia, 1993. This book is an encyclopedic work which attempts to briefly describe every nation in the world in terms of the ethnicity of its peoples, its economy, its politics, and its religious situation. Crossroad also publish a companion text, simplified for younger readers, titled “You Can Change the World”. 10. Jones.E.Stanley - "The Unshakable Kingdom and the Unchanging Person", Abingdon Press, Michigan, 1980. This is an old classic which will excite the reader about the applicability of Jesus and the gospel to every aspect the life of every person of all times. 11. Kotlowski.Elizabeth - “South Land of the Holy Spirit”, Christian History Research Institute, Orange, NSW, 1994. This book represents something of a milestone in Christian History scholarship and Christian Education. It articulates Biblical principles which form the basis of successful societies, then goes on to relate the stories of well-known Australian pioneers, explorers, governors, educators, etc in the light of their Christian faith. 12. Knight.G. - "Philosophy & Education - an introduction in Christian perspective" , Andrews University Press, Michigan, 1980.

George Knight takes a structural approach to teaching his reader the business of philosophy. He does this from a well-articulated Christian perspective. This book is highly recommended for a teacher who wishes to begin the process of learning to be a Biblical Christian thinker. 13. McLennan, G. - “Understanding our Christian Heritage” (Vol 1 & 2), Christian History Research, Orange, N.S.W., 1987. Several essays pointing out the Christian Heritage of Australia. 14. Marshall.P. & Manuel.D. - "The Light and the Glory", Revell, New Jersey, 1973. This fascinating book is a good example of "reconceptualizing" the subject of history from a Biblical perspective. The authors have researched early American History with view to allowing the reader to see how God was active in the stories that we have heard dozens of times before from humanist historians. 15. Martin.Dr.Glen - "Biblical World View", a tape-recorded lecture series available from Light Educational Ministries, PO Box 966, Dickson, ACT,2602. Dr. Martin's extensive historical knowledge, combined with his perspicacious grasp of Biblical theology, makes this series a captivating and mind-enlarging experience for the serious student. 16. Murray, I.H. - “The Australian Christian Life from 1788: An Introduction and an Anthology”, The Banner of Truth Trust, Edinburgh, 1988. A helpful; start to exploring Australia’s Christian history. 17. Pink, A.W. - “The Sovereignty of God”, Banner of Truth Trust, London, 1961. A sound and balanced exposition of God’s priority and involvement in all of life. 18. Rutherford, S. - “Lex Rex”, Sprinkle Publications, Harisson burg, Virginia, 1982 [1644] A detailed discussion of the rule of God’s law as opposed to the arbitrary rule of human authority. 19. Rushdoony, RJ - “The Biblical Philosophy of History”, Presbyterian and Reformed Publishing Co., Phillipsburg, N.J., 1969. This book opens up the sovereignty of God in the direction and flow of history. Dr Rushdooney’s views on the application of Old Testament law to contemporary society may cause some concerns to some, but his work has valuable insights to offer. 20. Ryken, L. - “Culture in Christian Perspective: A Door to Understanding and Enjoying the Arts”, Multnomah Press, Oregon, 1986. Ryken shows how to bring a Christian perspective to the Arts: interpretation of what exists and inspiration to a Christian contribution. 21. Schaeffer.Francis - "The Christian World View Series"

Page 14: Being Transformed by the Renewing of Your Mind€¦ · Being Transformed by the Renewing of Your Mind A Short Course A. Global Aim This course aims to equip participants with the

Although Francis Schaeffer's work is now fairly old, it is still worth reading. Schaeffer eloquently expounds the thesis that the Biblical Christian world view is the only one that has, in history, proven to produce a society which consistently and simultaneously manifests peace, freedom, and order with relative prosperity. A brain-cleaning read! 22. Sire.J.W. - "The Universe Next Door", I.V.P., U.K., 1988. Sire's book will excite you with the poignancy of the Christian world view, then, from that background, will explore other world views such as Deism, Naturalism, New Age, etc. 23. Turner, H. – “The Roots of Science”, The Deep Sight Trust, Auckland, NZ, 1998 Demonstrates that Biblical Christianity provides the only cosmology that can coherently support scientific development within a culture. 24. Walsh & Middleton - "The Transforming Vision", This text examines the relationship between our worldview (and every human being has one) and the way we live. To catch a vision of the completeness, competency, and applicability of the Christian world view in contrast to the inanity and bankruptcy of world views which reject Christ will indeed "transform" the way you view life. 25. Wines, E.C. - “The Hebrew Republic”, American Presbyterian Press, Uxbridge, Mass., 1980. Explores the forms of civil government that are exemplified in Scripture. 26. Wolters. A.M. - “Creation Regained: a transforming view of the world”, Intervarsity Press, Leicester, 1985. Helpful in understanding our need to reconceptualize every area, recognizing God’s hand in the whole created order.
