The start of the Roman provincial coinage of Odessos (late 1st

c. BC1stc. AD) and the pseudo-autonomous issues of the city

(1stc. BC3rdcentury AD)

Abstract: This article treats the coins of Odessos minted in the time when the

city entered the imperial system of Rome. They are divided into two groups:

imperial and pseudo-autonomous. Two Imperial types are distinguished:

Type 1 bears a portrait of Augustus (27 BC 14 AD) (Figs. 15, 30, 37, 38,

4042) and Type 2 has that of Marcus Agrippa (Figs. 11, 15 and 36).

Pseudo-autonomous coinage issues are divided into four types: Type 1 "Head

of the Great god of OdessosPluto/DarzalasRider " (Figs. 2024, 26 and29); Type 2 "Head of Apollo god reclining" (Fig. 43); Type 3 "Head of

Heraclesreclining Great god of Odessos Pluto/Darzalas" (Figs. 44, 47

48), and Type 4 "Head of Heracles reclining River god" (Fig. 49). The so-

called pseudo-autonomous coins accompany all provincial cities

coinages from the time of Augustus (27 BCAD 14) until Gordian III (238

234 AD). The beginning of this synchronization was proven in my previous

publications. In this article I discuss its end. That will be the new Type 4

pseudo-autonomous coins, dated to the 3rdcentury. A milestone of the study

of these coins is the correct identification and interpretation of countermarks

applied on Odessitan coins at the end of the 1stcentury BC and the beginning

of the 1st century AD. These are three different countermarks. The first twoare placed together and n the best preserved specimens we see they

represent two different persons (Figs. 30-32 and 40). The third is always a

single one/isolated (Figs. 36, 38-40). Based on detailed observation, I think

the double countermarks show the portraits of Augustus and Rhoemetalkes I

(12/11 BCAD 12/13). The single one is most likely to be a portrait of King

Kotys IV, the son of Rhoemetalkes I, who ruled Pontic Thrace in ca. AD

12/1318.
