2014 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY

ideastream applies the power of media to education, culture and citizenship to strengthen our communities. Recognized locally and nationally as a new model for public media, ideastream distinguishes itself through its commitment to partnership, community engagement and extensive use of multiple media. As a nonprofit organization, it is independent, community controlled and has established a strong record of financial and operational stability. ideastream is well-positioned to leverage its assets with others to build a stronger, more connected community.

The mission of ideastream is to strengthen our communities.

ideastream pursues its mission as a multiple media public service organization by providing

distinctive, thought-provoking programs and services that enlighten, inspire, educate and entertain.

ideastream is the consolidation of eight educational and public service media programs and

services, all previously managed separately:

• WVIZ/PBS with four channels of public television service,

• 90.3 WCPN Northeast Ohio’s NPR News station,

• WCLV CLASSICAL 104.9 with classical music around the clock,

• CIVIC COMMONS a multiple media community engagement program,

• OHIO PUBLIC RADIO AND TELEVISION STATEHOUSE NEWS BUREAU a service of Ohio public broadcasting stations, managed by ideastream, reporting on legislation and issues relating to the state of Ohio,

• THE OHIO CHANNEL a service of Ohio public broadcasting stations, managed by ideastream, combining coverage of sessions of the legislature, the Supreme Court and other activities at the Statehouse, as well as programs produced by Ohio public broadcasters,

• NORTH OHIO TECHNOLOGY ASSOCIATION (NOTA) a broadband interactive video distance learning network for K–12 schools, managed by ideastream on behalf of member school districts, and

• SCIENCE AND MATH ACHIEVEMENT REQUIRED FOR TOMORROW (SMART Consortium) a professional development program for teachers to improve science and math instruction, managed by ideastream on behalf of member school districts.

BELIEVE IN…ideastreamThe mission that drives ideastream—“to strengthen our communities”—is far more than just a mission statement. It is a promise to the people of Northeast Ohio, including the 2.8 million

people in our region and beyond who access ideastream programs and services in any

given month.

This promise weaves itself through the multiple media of ideastream: WVIZ/PBS, 90.3 WCPN, WCLV Classical 104.9, web content at ideastream.org, interactive social media, wide-ranging educational services and community engagement through Civic Commons.

As the volunteer chair of the Board of Trustees, I am proud to share this Report to the Community. And I believe that as you page through it, you’ll find what matters most to our

community.

Every year, ideastream conducts The Listening Project, an effort to listen to the community and look for what matters.

What we learn is that you deeply value the region’s assets—among them our world-class arts and culture, the parks and natural spaces we enjoy, top-notch health care and a bounty of star-studded local chefs and restaurants. But you also worry over challenges, like education, public transit, jobs and community perception.

This feedback from the community is what shapes the programs and services that ideastream provides every day. The Listening Project also tells us just how much you believe in ideastream and depend on those programs and services for education and to understand and engage in the pressing matters impacting our region, our state and the world.

This is a responsibility that the Board of Trustees takes seriously. In fact, it’s exactly why we are in the midst of pursuing a five-year strategic plan to double the investment in ideastream-produced programs and services, empowering ideastream to further strengthen the region’s assets and better tackle its challenges.

I believe you’ll see that ideastream will emerge from this process even more community-focused, mission-driven and better able to support the needs of the communities we serve.

Thank you for all you do to help ideastream strengthen our communities.

Kevin McMullen CHAIR

2014 IDEASTREAM REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY 1

BELIEVE IN…arts & culture

The Cleveland Orchestra’s 2015 At Home neighborhood residency in Broadway Slavic Village featured a variety of public events in traditional—and not-so-traditional—venues throughout the historic Cleveland neighborhood, like Our Lady of Lourdes Church [pictured]. ideastream covered many aspects of the three-month residency through concert broadcasts on WVIZ/PBS and WCLV 104.9, audio postcards on 90.3 WCPN and more.

When the Near West Theatre moved into its new home in the Gordon Square Arts District, ideastream programs The Sound of Applause on 90.3 WCPN and Applause on WVIZ/PBS were there when the theater arts organization raised the curtain.

Arts and culture lovers come to ideastream to access art, music, theater,

film and other cultural content. Television and radio programs feature

performances like The Cleveland Orchestra’s Broadway Slavic Village Residency.

The experience lives on with access to features and excerpts on ideastream.org.

Listening to the community and looking for what matters informs, inspires and

shapes ideastream-produced programs and services available through multiple

media. The Listening Project, now in its 13th year, asks the community to describe

the region’s assets, as well as its challenges. ideastream convenes local leaders for

in-depth discussions on the economy, natural spaces and community development

and conducts ongoing Listening Project surveys at ideastream.org.

arts & culture

As part of the Listening Project, leaders from the educational and nonprofit community gathered to discuss existing challenges and working solutions relating to the dropout dilemma and low graduation rates in Northeast Ohio.

Civic Commons ideastream launched its Living History series, which revisits historical events and assesses their lasting impact, with an exploration of “The Burning River” at the Cleveland Metroparks Merwin’s Wharf on the Cuyahoga River. Panelists included local historians, as well as a participant who was a public official when the river caught fire in 1969.

BELIEVE IN…community issues

BELIEVE IN…educationFrom ground-breaking editorial coverage on the impact of policy on educational

issues to focusing on educational service to parents, child care professionals,

students and teachers, ideastream leverages community partnerships to improve

educational outcomes.

To explore ways to encourage early learning and increase high school graduation, ideastream presented “Get Ready to Graduate: Spotlight on Innovation,” which included a keynote by author, youth advocate and Rhodes Scholar Wes Moore [pictured]. The discussion was introduced by Patricia Harrison, President and CEO of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and included a panel of Cleveland-area educational leaders.

Cleveland-area student leaders shared valuable practical experiences and advice that led to their educational successes to help eighth graders envision, plan for and expect their own during the American Graduate Youth Success Panel at the Idea Center at Playhouse Square. The daylong event was the result of a partnership between ideastream, College Now Greater Cleveland and Third Federal Foundation.

BELIEVE IN…state of ohioGavel-to-gavel coverage of public sessions of the General Assembly and Ohio

Supreme Court are seen on The Ohio Channel. And, the Ohio Public Radio and

Television Statehouse News Bureau provides daily reports on radio and a weekly

television program covering issues relating to the State of Ohio. Both are managed

by ideastream on behalf of public broadcasters in Ohio.

2014 IDEASTREAM REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY 5

BELIEVE IN…health & science deastream supports healthy people, healthy places and a healthy future by

creating content on topics important to the health of the community. This

content includes the multiple media series “Be Well,” which focuses on the art and

science of health and includes interviews from health experts, in-depth health

reports, coverage of community health setbacks and advances and wellness tips

and tools available on-demand.

state of ohioThrough focused, objective reporting on Ohio’s General Assembly—comprised of Ohio’s House of Representatives [pictured] and the Ohio Senate—the Statehouse News Bureau provides informative, comprehensive coverage of the activities of both legislative bodies to Ohio’s public radio and television stations.

As part of the Be Well lineup, ideastream produced a yearlong, multiple media series on the complexities of elder caregiving—a subject impacting Northeast Ohio’s aging residents, as well as those who care for them. Through the series, Be Well audiences meet Philos, a penguin-robot prototype designed at Case Western Reserve University to become the elder caretaker of the future; explore “art care” therapy for those living with dementia; and review options to plan, and pay, for long-term care.
