who the heck is the pretzelbum?!

 Pretze lbum. I t ’s the cur ious name on everyone’s l ips… Well , perhaps not , but Pretzelbum was def in i te ly on my l ips. Maybe they were just pretze l crumbs… darn.

I f i rst came across the works of the infamous Pretzelbum in my fresh t ravels around Monash Univers ity , Caulf ie ld Campus. Tree Stump 2.0, now for iPhone. Obsessed, I fo l lowed the tongue- in-cheek gestures around the Fine Arts Facul ty . Only to come across some more on the outski r ts of the CBD. I was sure that th is wi t ty person what fo l lowing me, clear ly that was not the case. As it were I fo l lowing the strateg ica l ly p laced crumbs around Melbourne. Since these encounters I began fo l lowing the Pretzelbum on Tumblr and Instagram.

Fast-track ourselves a year forward, we set the scene

in Florence. The art ist ic hub of I ta ly . Shocked. I met the Pretzelbum in the f lesh.

An unknown suspect. A we l l -known fr iend.

solved i tself . The Tree Stump had an owner, and a l i t t le more context. Giulia told me that Pretzelbum came about at the end of 2012. “It was initially my ‘anonymous’ Instagram page but that didn’t last too long!” she says, As for the origins of the name? “I have no idea how I came up with it. I think at the time I was really into eating pretzels and I think I was using the word bum a lot in my vocabulary (I have no idea why) and just put the two together and there you go!”

Pretzelbum, why was/is having a pseudonym important or relevant to your presence both on and offline? I have never really thought of it as a pseudonym to be honest. But I guess I’ve never really been too confident in myself as an artist so sharing my work not under my name has helped me get used to doing so. For a while, me and the “pretzelbum” where separate people in a way, but that’s not the case anymore. It’s really interesting because a lot of people have started calling me Pretzelbum in real life so I feel like there has been this sort of fusion of me and pretzelbum and we are one (as lame as that sounds!)   . . . . . . . . . . . Is having your work on

a technological plane important to your practice? I ask this because although I found you in the public domain, I followed both your work and progress online . . . . . . . . . . . . Not so much. I only began putting my work on the World Wide Web about a year and a half ago as a way to become more confident in sharing my artwork and putting myself out there. It has definitely helped me in those regards.

Left: ‘Tree Stump 2.0 now for iPhone’, Image by Maddy Anderson. BELCO~ Why are you drawn to the tree stump? PRETZELBUM~ That’s a very good question and one I can’t really explain fully. I had this idea and was trying to find the right object to make it work and then I discovered the tree stump and its perfectness for my idea, and now I can’t get away from the tree stump! BELCO~ Why is it important that tree stump reaches a wider audience? PB~ I think it needs to reach a wider audience in order to create a dialogue surrounding the absurdity of consumer culture. It is definitely an inescapable force of our lives and I think if we can’t beat it we might as well laugh about it. BELCO~ Why will tree stump become a work of art in the technological plane? PB~I really want to further my project from posters to an actual Tree Stump app. I think it will be the ultimate gag as the app will only be an image of a tree stump and it will serve absolutely no purpose! Fingers crossed that it does becomes a work of art in the technological plane!
