Fan-coil air conditioning systems call
for a special room temperature controller.
This device must not only control the
valves precisely, it must also support
multi-stage fan control. Simple opera-
tion and the option of individual over-
ride are further essential prerequisites.
Reconciling these diverse requirements
is no problem for the special fan coil
controllers in the EXT-F2000PS series:
fine-tuned to meet these specifications,
they interact optimally with the char-
acterised control valves.
Lower costs with
air bubble-tight closing valves
The 2 and 3-way characterised control
valves in the R2BR.. and R3BR.. series,
proven millions of times over, control
warm or cold water circuits precisely,
reliably and efficiently – in fan coils too.
Since the valves are always air bubble-
tight in the closed position, no leakage
occurs. They are motorised with com-
pact TR actuators, which are renowned
for their low energy consumption (0.5 W
in standby mode). This valve/actuator
combination generates a significant
reduction in overall energy consump-
tion and results in a short payback
period for the basic investment.
Allowing energy to circulate un-
necessarily when valves are closed
is something that is rightly frowned
upon today. The answer is surpris-
ingly simple: in conjunction with
Belimo’s room temperature con-
troller, characterised control valves
that are always air bubble-tight
in the closed position facilitate
energy-optimised control of fan-
coil air conditioning systems and
help protect the environment.

Save valuable energy
Because conventional globe valves
usually have leakage rates, up to 15
litres of cold water can easily circulate
unused per fan coil each year. For
1000 valves, this adds up to about
15,000 litres of cold water, which is
approximately equivalent to the volume
of a 3 x 5 m pool which is 1 m deep.
This can be prevented with Belimo
characterised control valves.
High consumption with
conventional control valves
High energy losses can be demon-
strated by the example of an air condi-
tioning device with 2.5 kW of power and
a throttling circuit on the valve side:
The supply is 6°C, the return 12°C and
the set point 22°C. This results in an «a
value» of 0.23. The valve was designed
with a valve authority (PV) of 0.5. The
fan coil is in zero-load operation (valve
closed) for 2000 hours per year. The
energy loss for a conventional globe
valve can be as high as 16 kWh / year
(for a typical leakage rate of 0.05% of
the kvs value). Practically, the valve
authority PV will end up being even
smaller, i.e. the energy loss increases
to 20 kWh / year and fan coil with a
PV of 0.3.
More efficient with Belimo
characterised control valves
These energy losses are avoided when
air bubble tight closing characterised
control valves from Belimo are used.
With energy costs for cooling being
about € 0.06 / kWh, the savings per fan
coil in ten years are about € 10.00. For
1000 units, then, there is a savings
potential of € 10,000.
