beginning of the month. If you do not need early-bird every day, you can pay $10 per day at time of drop-off.

4. Lunch Bunch Program: (available when enough interest) Pack a Lunch and join the fun! Your child can enjoy an extended day at Red Bank UMC Preschool by registering for our “Lunch Bunch” program. “Lunch Bunch” is extra time added to your child’s preschool day from September through May. The Lunch Bunch program gives children the opportunity to share a mealtime with their friends, learn important social skills and participate in planned enrichment activities. During Lunch Bunch, children can engage in stories, songs, free play, gym or playground time, games, art, and science. This also provides parents some flexibility in their schedules by allowing a later pick-up time. Parents provide their child with a bag lunch and beverage on their Lunch Bunch day. Lunch Bunch is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, 12:00-1:00pm. This program is for three and four-year-olds. Students must attend school that day they are also attending Lunch Bunch.

5. A dated waiting list for each class is maintained when there are more requests than vacancies. The wait lists are updated in April of each year. It is the parents’ responsibility to notify Red Bank UMC Preschool if they wish for a child to remain on the waiting list. Priority for vacancies is given according to the date of the vacancy, the request for admission date, and according to the following priority categories:

a. An additional child of a Red Bank member familyb. An additional child of a family already enrolled at Red Bank UMC Preschool (non-Red Bank UMC member)c. A child of a Red Bank member family with no sibling in attendanced. A child of a non-Red Bank member family with no sibling in attendance

Parents of children invited to fill vacancies are given one week from the date of the invitation to register their child (by paying registration and instructional fees) and begin attendance. If they do not respond, pay registration fees, and attend/pay tuition by the end of that period, the opportunity to enroll for said vacancy is forfeited and the next eligible child will be invited.

6. Parents who plan to withdraw their child are asked to give Red Bank UMC Preschool a minimum of two weeks’ notice in writing. This enables Red Bank UMC Preschool sufficient time to notify other families who may be on the waiting list of vacancies.

7. Snack will be provided at no additional fee.

8. If a child is required to be on a special diet, the parent must notify director. It is asked that candy not be brought into the preschool unless there is a pre-approved party scheduled that day and there are enough treats to share with the whole class. Lollipops (or any candy on a stick), hard candy, and chewing gum are not allowed. Please be mindful of those students with food allergies.9. Telephone calls. Parents may call any time of the day to check on a child. If you call at a busy time for the teacher, a message will be taken and the teacher will return your call as soon as possible. (803)359-0329.

10. Parent Volunteers. You, as parents, are Red Bank UMC Preschool’s most valuable asset and we welcome your participation in our school. Should you have a special gift or talent that you would like to share with our children, please contact us. Parents are also always welcome to visit their child’s class to observe instruction, engagement, or play. We ask that visiting parents make arrangements and check in with the Director and teacher to verify the daily time schedule.

11. Room Parents are important people who help the Parent’s Club and teachers in many ways! The responsibilities of a Room Parent may vary a little bit depending on the age of the children and the program or teacher's needs. Often having two room parents per class is ideal for sharing the responsibilities and serving as a backup when scheduling conflicts occur. The Director of the Preschool will provide Room Parents with contact information for all parents in their child’s class. Generally speaking, the roles and responsibilities of Room Parents are as follows:

Red Bank United Methodist Church, Lexington, South Carolina Page 8

Page 12: Belin Creative Learning Center - Red Bank United …€¦ · Web viewParent Handbook 2019 – 2020 (INCLUDING END OF PROGRAM GOALS FOR 4’S) Red Bank United Methodist Church Preschool

The primary role of the Room Parent is to establish and maintain open lines of communication between the teacher, parents, and school administration to ensure the best possible experience for every child!

Room Parents coordinate social events such as holiday parties. Most classes celebrate the six main holidays (Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine's Day, Easter, and End-of School) with a special snack and activity such as a craft or reading a story. Also, we have the four-year-old graduation.

Room Parents are also asked to assist with recruiting parent volunteers to help with a wide variety of activities in the classroom and for special events outside the classroom. (family activities and fundraisers throughout the year)

Room Parents may also share with parents an “All About Me” information sheet on your child’s teachers.

Room Parents are asked to attend one meeting per year to discuss their roles, planned projects and gain their input. This meeting will be announced annually by the Red Bank UMC Preschool Parent Club.

12. Inclement weather. Red Bank UMC Preschool may open late or be closed due to inclement weather. Red Bank UMC Preschool follows the schedule of Lexington School District One (closings and delays). If Lex 1 is on a delay, our Preschool will open at 10:00AM and students will attend 10:00AM-1:00PM.

13. Staff education. All staff is required to have CPR and first aid training. All staff members participate in the Red Bank UMC Safe Sanctuary Program, which is a program outlining the policies and procedures for keeping our children and workers safe.

14. Christian education environment. All classes use the WEE Learn Curriculum that is appropriate for their ages. WEE Learn celebrates each child’s unique qualities, fosters individuality and creativity, and emphasizes a love of books and reading all while teaching through stories from the Bible. Children’s differences and learning styles are considered as children learn through play with teacher led support to maximize your child’s learning potential. Our daily schedules will consist of Christian biblical traits, bible stories, bible verses, math skills, reading skills, writing skills, phonological awareness, and learning centers consisting of art, building, dramatic play, nature science, music, and games with an integration of Spanish.

15. It is extremely important that Red Bank UMC Preschool maintain an up-to-date address, e-mail, working telephone and cell phone number for all parents. Please notify the preschool immediately, by phone, in writing or by e-mail, if you have a change in any of your contact information so that in an emergency we will be able to reach you.16. Throughout the year we will have several total school assemblies and special celebrations to which parents and families will be invited. We enjoy sharing your child’s successes and growth with you and encourage you to attend!

17. Parties: Arrangements may be made in advance with your child’s teacher for the parent to bring cookies or cupcakes to share with the class on your child’s birthday or for other special holidays. Cameras are welcome. No lollipops or gum, please.

18. Please check your child’s folder daily for important announcements, information for parents, and children’s work to go home. Folders should be cleaned out on Thursday’s.

Policies and GuidelinesDropping off and picking up childrenThe responsibility of the teacher begins the moment a child’s parent or guardian drops the child off at the school. The director (or a teacher) will be waiting to greet children on the porch at the top of the stairs on the side of the building designated for the preschool. A sign in/out sheet will be present to keep track of who is going to be responsible for picking up your child each day. In

Red Bank United Methodist Church, Lexington, South Carolina Page 9

the event that you are unable to pick up your child and you are having someone else pick them up please leave a name and number so that we can be sure to let your child leave with your designated party. If someone is not familiar to the staff, the person will be asked to present picture identification for safety. DO NOT LEAVE YOUR CHILD IF DIRECTOR OR TEACHER IS NOT PRESENT. If you would prefer to walk your child in, be sure to park on the west side of the building designated for parking. Preschool parents/guardians are invited to visit the classrooms at any time, but in general should not linger with their children in the mornings to get children on task as quickly as possible. Pick up will be at the same door as drop off. Students will be escorted by a teacher to their car. The parent/guardian is then responsible for safely fastening the child into his or her car seat before leaving carpool line. Please DO NOT forget to sign out your child with the director or teacher dismissing children.

ClothingWashable play clothes are the most suitable choice for children at Red Bank UMC Preschool. If your child can use the potty by themselves, please do not send them in clothes they cannot fasten by themselves. Each child must have an extra change of clothing at all times in case of an accident such as spilled food/drinks or toilet accidents. Extra clothing, underpants, coats, caps, sweaters, etc. should be clearly marked with the child’s name, placed in a zipped baggy, and kept in your child’s backpack. Please dress your child for the weather. Children will also go outside to play on winter days when conditions are conducive. Long skirts and clothing with trailing parts can be dangerous during play on equipment and interfere with some art and physical activities. Children are requested to wear tennis (or similar style) shoes. Closed-toe shoes are required - no flip-flops, or clogs.

ToysRed Bank UMC Preschool has ample toys for playtime activities and encourages the children to learn by sharing them. Please do not permit your child to bring any toys or jewelry to school.

Visitors All parent / adult visitors are asked to check with the Director before entering a classroom. In the absence of the Director, please see the person designated by the Director to be in charge. Children are not allowed to bring friends or child family members with them to Red Bank UMC Preschool.SmokingSmoking is not permitted by anyone in or around the Red Bank UMC building or the playground, and not within 50 feet of any Red Bank UMC building.

DisciplineOur goal at Red Bank UMC Preschool is to model Christian behavior in our actions and attitudes. We guide children toward positive behavior with praise and love. Preschool staff will use positive redirection and establish specific limitations to foster the children’s own ability to self-discipline. Teachers will encourage children to be fair, respect property, respect others and learn to be responsible for their actions. Discipline involves teaching character and self-control. When a child uses aggressive physical behavior toward staff or other children it is unacceptable. Staff will intervene immediately when a child becomes physically aggressive to protect all of the children and encourage a more acceptable behavior. When working with the two year old children, teachers will use strategies such as prevention, distractions, encouraging, modeling, and leading the child to a new activity. Toddlers should never be put in time out because it is developmentally inappropriate for this age group. For Three and Four year olds similar techniques will be used. Calm down time may be used as behavior management technique to assist in solving an ongoing or habitual behavioral problem for this age group. Calm down will be used on a limited basis and will be followed by redirection and positive encouragement.

Any severe discipline problems will require a meeting with the teacher, the director, family members and Pastor or Preschool Board. If a family is unwilling to address the situation, the child will be asked to leave the school. In consultations with the parent, the director may work out a behavior modification plan for a child. For our parent’s information we will have a conference during the spring to explain the progress and improvements made as well as improvements needed of each individual child. These observations are recorded in a form showing your child’s behavior and learning skills during school time. If attention to any particular behaviors or needs are deemed necessary, we will schedule a conference at your convenience to discuss all concerns.

Red Bank UMC Preschool does not use ANY FORM of corporal punishment, physical force, or other humiliating discipline techniques. A child is never deprived of food, water, or bathroom facilities.

Biting Biting is not uncommon when infants and toddlers respond to the discomfort of teething and when they are beginning to express their strong likes and dislikes. Biting can also occur when children are seeking adult’s attention or when they are adjusting to sharing their space and their materials. Biting occurs most frequently when children’s language is just emerging- it is sometimes their most effective strategy for expressing their emotions. Please be assured that the preschool staff supervises all children at all times. When working with a child who is using his/her teeth to solve problems, our teachers and caregivers target their efforts to prevent injuries and to change this behavior as quickly as possible. Teachers model and encourage children to use “words” to solve problems. They will also model and encourage other appropriate ways to express strong emotions. Teachers and administrators also make every effort to work with parents to eliminate this behavior and can suggest methods for changing the biting behavior. If a child should be bitten these procedures are followed: The child who was bitten receives necessary first aid immediately. The teacher will fill out an Incident Form describing what happened. It is put in the files of both the child who was bitten and the child who was biting. If the skin was broken, parents of the child who was bitten are called immediately. If the skin was not broken the incident is discussed with the parents when the child is picked up. We will use complete confidentiality when dealing with this issue. For safety of the other children, if a child continues to bite (more than three incidents) parent(s) will be required to meet with the director.

Potty TrainingRed Bank UMC Preschool will assist with the potty training of children in the classes for two year olds. Children must be proficiently potty trained before entering the classes for children three years old. If a 3 year old student is not potty trained, the parent will assist in the classroom until child is potty proficient.

Health PolicyImmunization RecordsRed Bank UMC Preschool is required to maintain an immunization record for each child. The parent/guardian is responsible for providing this form to Red Bank UMC Preschool and updating it each time the child receives new immunizations. No child will be allowed to attend without proper immunization forms complying with DHEC regulation.

Medical EmergenciesRed Bank UMC Preschool will seek emergency medical treatment if a child is in crisis, including but not limited to, allergic reactions, breathing problems, unconsciousness, or any condition which might need a doctor’s immediate attention. A staff member of the Preschool will call 911 and will then call the emergency contact person listed on the child’s records. A staff member will

bring the child’s records and will accompany or follow the child to the hospital and stay with the child until a parent or guardian arrives. In the event of a minor accident, first aid measures will be taken and an Accident Report Form will be completed. The original Accident Report will be given to the parent, and a copy will be placed on file in the child’s folder. Minor scrapes and bruises are treated with tender loving care. Parents will not be called for every minor injury. Parents will be called in the case of accidents that may need a doctor’s attention. Parent will promptly be called if their children experience one of the following:

Injury to the head or face Injury that causes a great amount of bleeding Injury or incident that upsets the child to the point of inconsolability

MedicationImportant: We cannot give any over-the-counter medications at school (i.e. fever reducers, eye drops, allergy creams, etc.). Red Bank UMC Preschool will accept and administer life-saving medications (i.e. epinephrine shot, inhalers that affect breathing abilities). We must have a parent’s written permission on our Medical Release Form in order to administer this medication. All medicines must be brought to the preschool in the original container. Please let us know of any medications your child is taking at home. Sometimes medications affect our behavior and will need to be aware of that.

Guidelines for Illnesses Requiring ExclusionTo protect the health of all children, the Preschool follows the guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatrics for exclusion. The preschool requires that a child or teacher, with the following conditions be excluded from the Preschool until his/her recovery has reached a stage conducive to inclusion in regular activities. The following illnesses or conditions shall result in exclusion from the preschool:

Fever of 100° F or above as measured in an axillary position (under the arm). Child must be fever free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication; this includes ear infections. Diarrhea – uncontrolled diarrhea, increased number of stools, increased water and/or decreased form that is not contained by the diaper or toilet use. The child may return to the preschool 24 hours after the symptoms stop.

Vomiting –defined as one or more episodes of vomiting in the previous 24 hours. The child should remain home until vomiting resolves. The child may return to the preschool 24 hours after the vomiting stops.

Chicken Pox – until seven days after onset of rash or until all sores have scabbed over

Hand Foot Mouth disease (Coxsackievirus) - The child may return three to six days after the condition has been evaluated and treated.

Head lice – The child may return 24 hours after treatment is begun and nits are no longer present. The parent(s)/guardian(s) must submit a statement indicating that his/her child received appropriate treatment. The statement must include the name of the specific Head Lice medication administered either by a physician or the parent(s)/ guardian(s) before the child may be readmitted to our center. Contact an administrator for information about effective and approved treatment plans.

Fifths Disease – A person with parvovirus infection is most contagious before the rash appears either during the incubation period (the time between infection and the onset of symptoms) or when experiencing only mild respiratory symptoms.

Ringworm or Pinworm – The child may return 24 hours after treatment is begun.

Roseola – after rash and fever are gone.

Rotavirus - The child may return after the diarrhea stops for 24 hours which can be up to 9 days but no less than 2 to 3 days.

Scabies – The child may return 24 hours after one treatment with prescription cream.

Streptococcal pharyngitis (strep throat) – Child may return to the center 24 hours after initial treatment and after 24 hours of being fever-free.

Viral or bacterial infections – until treated and released by physician.

Symptoms of possible severe illness, such as unusual lethargy, irritability, persistent crying, difficulty breathing, or other unusual signs – until medical evaluation indicates inclusion.

The Director, in consultation with the child’s teaching team, will determine if a child is exhibiting any of the above illnesses or symptoms. If it is decided your child should be sent home, parents will be asked to pick their child up promptly. A reasonable amount of time (no more than 90 minutes) will be allowed for parents’ arrival. If the parents of an ill child cannot be reached or do not respond to the Preschool’s request to pick up their child, the emergency contact identified on the child’s Enrollment Form will be asked to come pick up the child instead. A statement from a physician identifying the type of illness and the date when the child may return to school may be required for contagious illnesses. Parental cooperation is essential in this effort.

Please let us know when your little one is at home not feeling well so we can pray for him/her at school.

I am aware of the following:Red Bank UMC Preschool is a Christian school and is a ministry of Red Bank United Methodist Church.

Children registering for a 3 year old class MUST be potty proficient. If my child is in a 3 year old classroom and is not potty trained, my assistance may be needed in my child’s classroom. Red Bank UMC Preschool follows Lexington 1 school calendar for all Holidays and In-service Days.

The first day of school for 2019-2020 is Tuesday, Sept 3, 2019 and the last day of school is Friday, May 22, 2020.

All students are required to have an up to date immunization form on file. Religious Exemption forms are not accepted.

I pledge to support Red Bank UMC Preschool in the following ways:If my child has food allergies or if I have dietary concerns, I will notify my child’s teachers of such in writing, and I will send my child’s snack if deems necessary.

I will share pertinent health information about my child with my child’s teacher in writing. I may be asked to provide information from my child’s doctor in the event of a medical concern. I understand that no medicines are administered at school, with exception of an epinephrine pen for a severe allergy.

I will respect the privacy of preschool families.

I will pay my tuition on the first of each month, and I will pay a late fee of $10 if my tuition is paid after the 10th of the month. I understand that if payment is not made by the 15 th of the month, the student’s spot may be forfeited.

Children in their 4th year are developing rapidly physically, mentally, socially, and emotionally. Each of them develops uniquely and at their own pace. We are never interested in comparing children or pushing them to meet goals according to a specific schedule. By the end of this year, it is our goal to have helped them develop skills which will enable them to succeed in any public or private kindergarten.
