Affirmative Action Affirmative action programs involve making

special efforts to hire or enroll groups that have suffered discrimination in the past.

Affirmative action programs have allowed women and minorities entry into professions formerly off limits to them.

Many colleges and almost all companies that do business with the federal government adopted these programs.

In the late 1970s, some people began to criticize affirmative action programs as “reverse discrimination”

Argument was that affirmative action set minority hiring or enrollment quotas and deprived whites of opportunities.

Today the fate of affirmative action is still being debated.
